It seems like no matter how many dice you buy, you still never have enough d6s... meanwhile, your collection of unnecessary d20s keeps getting bigger.
Dice of Rolling are not rocket science. They’re just regular dice that come in the amounts you actually need, and they use color for more than just decoration. One simple purchase, and you’re good to go for most of the situations you’ll encounter in the 5th edition of the world's greatest roleplaying game. And since each dice type is a different color, you'll always grab the right ones. It’s kind of a no-brainer, but nobody else is doing it so we're bringing it to Kickstarter.
This is the dice set we’ve always wanted for our table, and with your help we can bring it to tables everywhere!
We’re keeping the rewards real simple. You can pledge to receive 1, 2, 4, or 20 sets, and each set will include the same 29 color-coded dice + microfiber dice bag.
"They are easy to read. When you get to be 43 like me, your tired old man eyes need something high contrast. Dice of Rolling can be read from across the table, so no more using that spilt second to pick up the die to bring it inches from your face. Sure, it doesn’t seem like much but during a long combat, those split seconds add up to an estimated 32,134,487 hours you’ll save by having dice you can actually read well ... It’s not vaporware. The prototypes I tried were well made and well designed, as you’d expect from a UX professional who also happens to be a gamer." –Clave Jones, Editor in Chief @ Nerds on Earth
Sahara Sands (will unlock @ $30,000)
We originally launched the campaign without stretch goals because we realized that they would add significant cost to each dice set, which meant we'd have to raise the price. After the huge first week though, we started thinking that maybe we could add a stretch goal, as long as it was digital. So we're adding a stretch goal for Sahara Sands, a one-shot campaign designed by one of the players in our group. He's graciously offered to pony up his creation as a stretch goal for Dice of Rolling.
Brief synopsis: "Inspired by Las Vegas, Sahara Sands is a neon city in the desert where you can buy anything and the party never stops. But all is not well underneath this gilded facade. A serial killer is on the loose, and there are rumors of a new drug on the streets. Will you be able to unravel the mysteries of Sahara Sands?"
A lot of you probably stick to more conventional fantasy settings, but we hope that Sahara Sands will be a great "gateway" campaign to get more people interested in the hobby who might be turned off by what they'd consider to be stereotypical fantasy. And while Sahara Sands might look a bit different on the outside, it will still be chock full of elves, dwarves, tieflings, and all the rest. Normal rules, races and classes still apply.
This adventure will be for characters starting at level 1. It will be relatively short, and delivered digitally as a PDF. Expect modest production values, but nothing too crazy.
Sahara Sands will be unlocked at $30,000.
Q: Will the price go up after the Kickstarter?
A: Yes, Dice of Rolling will cost $25 after the Kickstarter is over. However, we’ll make sure to give our international friends an opportunity to order before the price goes up (scroll down to the next section for details).
Q: Don't some spells still use more dice?
A: We’ve designed one set of Dice of Rolling to cover the majority of spells and abilities in the game, but a there are a few that still use more dice. If you really want to be able to roll the full amount of dice for Meteor Swarm and other crazy spells and abilities, we have an easy solution: just buy two sets and double them up. It's still possible to create fringe cases that might use more dice, but practically speaking this will cover you for just about anything. And yes, we've designed the bag with enough room to hold two full sets.
Q: Does my character class need these?
A: Classes that are able to cast spells will get the most use out of Dice of Rolling. If you only ever play a Barbarian, you'll do just fine with a regular set of dice. Some classes that don't cast spells can still benefit to a limited degree—Rogues in particular due to their Sneak Attack requiring a lot of d6 at higher levels. New players will also benefit regardless of their class, due to all the dice being color-coded.
Q: Are these dice perfectly balanced?
A: Some of you have been asking about whether or not the dice are well balanced. We're going to be perfectly candid with you, since we don't want anyone buying a product that they won't end up being happy with...
DICE OF ROLLING ARE NOT PRECISION GAMING DICE.
Opaque dice are almost never perfectly balanced, and ours are no exception. The balance on them is mediocre at best.
Dice of Rolling are trying to solve a usability problem while offering great value. In our opinion, making your d20 roll a fraction of a percent more evenly isn't very important compared to making sure you roll the right dice in the first place. And we don't want to double the price of the set in order to solve a problem that we personally do not think is a big deal. If perfect dice balance is important to you, we respect that, but our product isn't for you. Please find some other product that you will be happier with.
Alternate solution: Most people only care about the balance of their d20s. So if you already have a couple of perfectly balanced d20s, you could just use your own d20s in place of the included ones. Most of the value of Dice of Rolling is in the other dice anyway.
The bad news:
We aren't offering international fulfillment for this project. We realize most projects offer it, but behind the scenes it often becomes problematic. International backers often pay $35 for shipping, and can also get hit with unexpected duties, taxes, and import fees. For a $100 board game this may be acceptable, but for a $20 dice set it just doesn't make sense.
The good news:
After the Kickstarter is over, we can use Amazon's global export service to get the product to you for a fraction of the normal international shipping cost. Unfortunately, this service only works for orders placed directly on Amazon's website, so it's no good for fulfilling Kickstarter pledges. This means Team USA is going to have to carry the Kickstarter, but it'll be good for everyone in the long run. Focusing on US fulfillment first means fewer distractions and delays for US backers, and it will ultimately save international customers a ton of money on shipping. So if you're international and you want our dice, please pledge $1 so that you get the project updates. We'll let you know when international fulfillment becomes available. We’ll make sure you get a chance to order Dice of Rolling before the price goes up to $25.
Risks and challenges
Update: As of July 21st, we've decided to add Backerkit to help streamline pledge management and cut down on errors. This will help ensure that fulfillment goes according to plan.
Q: Can you guys handle this project?
A: We’re not just nerds. We’re also experienced sellers on Amazon (with a seller rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars), which has given us lots of insight into the manufacturing and shipping process. We’ve learned the ins and outs of dealing with manufacturers, and how to fulfill lots of orders in a timely manner.
Q: What if you can’t figure out the manufacturing?
A: We know we can get it done, because we already have. We've already taken the extra time and expense to manufacture several "prototype" sets of dice upfront (the ones you see in the photos). These are far more than a homemade proof of concept – they actually came off the manufacturing line, and we're ready to make more. We’re way ahead of most projects in this regard, since we already have every manufacturing detail worked out.
Q: What about shipping? Won’t you get overwhelmed if there are a lot of backers?
A: When it's time to ship the rewards, we will leverage the same fulfillment platform that we already use for our other products on Amazon (Amazon FBA). We know this system front to back, and can use it to deliver rewards at a very large scale. We’ve intentionally made the backer levels very simple so that we can send the dice sets straight to Amazon in bulk. After that, we just upload the list of backers, and all the dice get delivered.
