I am excited to share with you our project: "Signs of our Occupy" and the 14 incredible young actors I have the privilege of working along side of in this magnificent journey! In August 2013 we will have the extraordinary opportunity to perform on the world's largest theatre stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival! (www.edfringe.com)
We plan on seizing the moment by creating an original piece of political theatre that has relevance, universal themes and is true to our roots; our views and commentary on the Occupy Oakland movement in our home city of Oakland. Our school and our community are at the epicenter of this movement. Only a few blocks away from Frank Ogawa plaza, we see first hand the tension, conflict, outcry and passion that echos through our streets. We hear first hand, the voices of the 99% as people from all backgrounds, socio-economic situations, ethnicities and political affiliations that cry from our streets and stand up for themselves and the generations that will follow. "Signs of our Occupy" is the retelling of their stories as inspired by actual signs created during the protests. Our production is honest, dramatic, telling, satiric, sad, poignant, relevant and personal.
Our trip to Edinburgh is important! Our themes are universal and reach beyond our country. It is a cry of the people, all people, for equality and change. Our trip will see us in Dublin and Edinburgh for 16 days. Among the many costs to mount such an enormous venture include: Air travel, Hotels, Performance Venue Costs, Food, Marketing, Registration Fees, Costumes/Makeup/Props and Ground Transportation. The total costs of our trip are estimated at nearly $50,000. That is an incredible amount of money for anyone. But we are Oakland, and we stand up to a challenge. Just like the protesters that are at the foundation of our show, we too will fight for our cause! We have been working very hard to raise our needed funds. The great news is....we are almost there!!! While ultimately our families will be responsible for our costs, ideally, we will reach our goals of project fundraising to help ease this enormous burden.
By helping to fund our project here, you will make a tremendous impact on our burden and help 14 incredibly talented, smart, ambitious and resilient kids realize their dreams! Your contribution toward our $7,500 goal goes directly toward our technical needs for the show including: set, costumes, makeup, props and lights. With your generous donation we are able to bring these stories and voices to life!
Ace, Noah, Emily, Max, Sionne, Gisella, Garrett, Cameron, Nia, Elana, Lucas, Zoe, Olivia, Adrianna and the entire School of Theatre Faculty THANK YOU for your contribution and support!
Risks and challenges
Once our project is funded, we substantially reduce the out of pocket expense of our families, which enables each and every one of our actors to take our story to the world stage of Edinburgh.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
