About this project
Within – Howard Tangye, the first comprehensive book of Tangye's work

Within is the first ever book of Howard Tangye's artwork. For decades, Howard has inspired the fashion industry as the head of Womenswear design at prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design ( CSM ), in London. His true passion for drawing is less well known. Now it is time to reveal his personal work – his world.
The 152 page book is a portrait of the intimate relationship between the artist and his sitters. It consists of 52 artworks, photographs by Kasia Bobula, text and essays by Marie McLoughlin, dress historian at the University of Brighton and Abraham Thomas, curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum ( V&A ), London. The book’s content is being edited and designed by us, STSQ.
HOWARD TANGYE – THE ARTIST
Howard Tangye is best known for his work, as a designer, illustrator and teacher in the world of fashion. As head of womenswear at Central Saint Martins, he has taught designers such as John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Stella McCartney, Zac Posen, Christopher Kane, Richard Nicoll, and Julie Verhoeven amongst others. When asked who had influenced him most at his alma mater, John Galliano said: ‘Howard Tangye – the most inspiring illustrator and tutor there’.
Until recently his work as an artist was less well known. His distinctive style depicting the clothed figure is finally gaining wider recognition and in 2012, a selection of 56 of his drawings and watercolours, were donated to London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.
WITHIN – THE BOOK
Within is essentially a story about Howard’s lifelong passion for drawing. It examines his working practices through the experiences of both the artist with his sitters. Most of his works depict characters that he met whilst teaching at CSM, several of whom have continued to pose for him over many years. In the book Howard describes the characteristics that attracted him to each sitter and how he has tried to capture these unique qualities. More unusually this book also gives a voice to the subject. They each narrate their experience of sitting for Howard and in some instances describe the feeling of posing in couture clothes. The book will contain 52 carefully selected portraits from his 40 year archive. Including portraits of Julie Verhoeven, Zac Posen, and Richard Nicoll to name a few, in what we believe is a long overdue survey of Howard Tangye’s remarkable work as an artist.
STSQ - THE DESIGNERS
We, stinsensqueeze ( STSQ ), are a design studio based in London and Paris with a passion for books and typography. We first met Howard when studying at Central Saint Martins in 2010 and have hugely admired his work ever since. Howard's true creativity and vision extends through all avenues of his life, with his house being an extension of his artwork. Since that first meeting we've built up a 3 year continuous collaboration, culminating in this project.
The book was born from our desire to share the rare beauty of Howard's portraits and is driven from a mutual wish to create a unique object together with him.
Howard has previously declined working with several established publishers since he chooses to distinguish his work as a fashion teacher, from his personal work as an artist. It is, therefore, a great honour to have the opportunity to work on this book. For us, it has been very important both to capture his narrative and the sensitivity of his work, whilst ensuring there is no compromise on the reproduction of the artwork and the production of the book.
CONTRIBUTORS TO THE BOOK
Throughout the design of the book we have been able to work with an amazing team of contributors. The introduction is written by Abraham Thomas, Curator of Design at the Victoria & Albert Musem. Marie McLoughlin, dress historian at the University of Brighton – a colleague and friend of Howard’s, has written the essay about him, his work and the moments with the sitters.
To complete the portrait of Howard, the book also explores the environment that his sitter enters into – his incredible house in London, captured by documentary photographer Kasia Bobula. We selected Kasia for her similarly sensitive approach to portraying others. She has previously photographed portraits of Jean Paul Gaultier, Rufus Wainright, and Lady Gaga, to name a few.
MORE THAN JUST A BOOK
The book is a tactile experience that reflects Howards world. During a two year long dialogue we have taken design decisions informed by our very personal relationship to his life and work. The production has been carefully sourced to achieve the exceptional high quality of the drawings, capturing the exact colours of the originals. The printer, Jigsaw Colour, the paper supplier, Fenner Paper and the binder Diamond Print Services were all selected locally to enable us to work closely with the craftsmanship of the book. This is undoubtedly something we would not have been able to control going through the channels of a publishing house.
WHAT DO WE NEED MONEY FOR?
We are very pleased to have got this far on the project, with all the content and design solidified. Not proceeding down the normal avenues of a publishing house, we now need your help to complete the project! By supporting this campaign you will help Howard's work come to light and support a new form of publishing – self published and locally produced books where more is invested in every stage of the production.
Self-publishing a book is an expensive thing to do, especially this one! We are convinced that Howard's artwork deserves the best printing techniques, on the best paper possible, and hope you agree. A publisher would be unlikely to print our book to the same level of perfection because it would not be profitable enough, but Kickstarter allows us to do it!
Firstly, it allows us to produce the book and offer it at a very reasonable price, and second it allows a quality of production that you rarely get to see from large publishing houses.
The printer is ready to start printing, the paper is pre-ordered and the typeface that we have specially developed is ready for the final essays. Now, we just need the support to start the production. If we happen to raise more than expected this will go to additional design features such as head and tail band, ribbons and towards the book launch, ideally in both London and Paris.
Finally we would like to say, thanks for reading and supporting us and we are very grateful to all of you for spreading the word about our project.
WHAT REWARDS DO YOU GET AS A BACKER
There are many ways you can support our project. We have carefully designed a selection of great rewards and Howard is offering both signed limited prints and some of his original artwork! Your generosity is extremely appreciated. Both Howard and STSQ cannot wait to see this project finally become a reality.
Much Love / STSQ & Howard

Risks and challenges
We have several friends who have had Kickstarter campaigns in the past, so we know how important it is to have the project ready to be able to meet all the deliveries on time.
The budget is very realistic and represents the minimum needed to fully complete the project. Everything has been taken into consideration, right down to the price of the sticky labels on the parcels!
We have agreements with all our suppliers, for the paper, printer and binder and they are all ready and excited to start the project. If the campaign is successful, production will start in July – August, for delivery in September. Everything is ready, we only need the necessary investment to start the production!
Professionally STSQ has worked for a large range of clients, from The Hayward Gallery ( London ) to Royal College of Art on many projects of different scales. We know what it takes to efficiently manage a budget on a timeline and we have always had great feedback from our clients.
This Kickstarter campaign is also being supported by our friends at Sidekick Creatives, a creative studio from London that specializes in helping and promoting artists and designers to launch their campaigns on crowdfunding platforms.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
