Funkisfabriken will become an eco-system of art, food, design, research and innovation.
A Centre for Research in Sustainability.
We bring together the leading researchers in their disciplines to collaborate in our open labs to solve the global challenges we face today. Chefs, architects, scientists, designers and economists, working together to develop new materials and to help business find new ways of working towards a circular future.
For You and Your Family.
We have plenty of space for you to explore and discover how to live more sustainably and get inspired. We will have a 50 bedroom Hotel with views across the forest and lake, a zero waste Restaurant open, Exhibitions Spaces, Sculpture Park, Farm and Beehives. We will offer courses in foraging, growing and cooking more sustainably. All will be open for you and your family to explore, learn, have fun and get inspired.
We are ready to make this happen. We have the building. We have the people. Now we just need your support to make Funkisfabriken a reality. Keep reading for more info on the project and how you can support us to make this happen.
PEOPLE, PLACE AND PURPOSE.
We will serve fantastic locally sourced and produced food in our Zero Waste Restaurant. The restaurant at Funkisfabriken will be set up by the chef, Doug McMaster of Silo Restaurant, Brighton. Doug's Zero Waste system will build a restaurant with no waste bins. "The production of waste has been eliminated by simply choosing to trade directly with farmers, using re-usable delivery vessels and choosing local ingredients that themselves generated no waste. Our compost machine, turns any of our restaurant scraps and trimmings directly into a compost used to produce more food… Closing the loop."
We will make Exhibition Spaces and a Sculpture Park using David Risley's 25 years of experience and contacts in the art world. David has closed his gallery to focus on Funkisfabriken full time. We will hire a full time curator to build an exhibition programme based on the themes of the project. Artists and designers working with the environment, new materials, landscape, sustainability etc. The sculpture park will be based around permanent commissioned works which are also practical and functional. Cabins, boats, saunas, bridges etc designed and made by artists as sculpture. We will also work with artists who work with the nature and landscape surrounding the building. Ephemeral works which involve no shipping, no bought in materials. Working solely with what the lake and land provide.
Learning through doing
We will run courses in fishing, foraging, cooking and growing food sustainably. Courses which help us to understand the relationship between the landscape, the seasons and the food we eat.
Funkisfabriken is a 12,000m2 (120,000sq ft) old furniture factory located in Diö, Småland, Southern Sweden (accessible by train and bus). Built during the 1930’s in the Funkis architectural style, the factory made high quality furniture by internationally acclaimed designers, mixing local skills and resources with international minds.
The building, a 1930's Funkis style factory, will also be a lab. We will use it as a test bed for the latest ideas and innovations in energy and construction. The heating, water, electricity, etc will be produced in collaboration with companies pushing the limits to provide the most sustainable, energy efficient solutions.
We will use the rooftop and areas surrounding the building to farm. Growing food to be used in the restaurant. The restaurant will also be the meeting place between the research in the labs and the public. We will eat the results. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Funkisfabriken is a large-scale project for a future global network of research centres for sustainable business solutions. Funkisfabriken will be a trans-disciplinary science and creativity centre for research in sustainability. Built around ground-breaking open labs, collaborative spaces and studios, the centre is open to the public as well as to professionals. Indoor and outdoor exhibitions and educational programs offer diverse entry-levels for learning and contributing to our circular futures vision. Funkisfabriken is for corporations, scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs and creators to get inspired and co-develop the sustainable solutions of tomorrow. It’s an ’imagination space’ that invites families, individuals, school classes and other visitors to participate and learn. Our zero-waste restaurant, hotel and visitor’s centre, offering a variety of eco-focused activities, provides an immersive framework of experiences and hospitality.
Funkisfabriken will be a research centre and consultancy based on memberships for businesses. Our researchers will develop new materials as well as new circular business solutions. We have some amazing key players already lined up, ready to start helping us help businesses make the changes they need to make.

Risks and challenges
Our goal is to be ready by summer 2019 depending on how much financial support and other kinds of help we get.
We have the building. We have a good team of skilled people which is growing fast.
Now we just need your support to make Funkisfabriken a reality.
Most of the planning is done, and we are basically ready to start building and refurbishing the place and construct the 50 rooms hotel, the labs and the restaurant.
We still need to do some paperwork before we have all permissions ready, but we have a very good collaboration with the local authorities and the local community.
We know there will be challenges, especially since the project is so ambitious and involves different people, expertise and sub-projects, but we do have a joint plan and motivation to make it come true.
There may be changes to specific plans, but the overall project is achievable and realistic.
The two main challenges are a) to ensure that the entire re-construction and refurbishing of Funkisfabriken is in line with our principles of sustainable practices and circular materials; b) that all the sub-projects (hotel, restaurant, labs) as our main elements are being developed simultaneously and are ready at the same time to welcome you, your family or your enterprise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
