About this project
The third album is quite often a problem, everybody in the pop business knows that. A lot of touring, no time to write new material, and all the good tunes used up on the first two. We rather cleverly circumnavigated this problem by making our second album, Two-Way Family Favourites, an collection of cover versions. We didn't do it deliberately of course, it just happened that way.
So for the third Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby album we've written eleven original tunes separately and together. The album is recorded, mixed and ready to be mastered and we want to release it on vinyl, CD and as a download.
It's going to be called A Working Museum because with a combined 70 year musical career that's probably what we are at this point. There's something unnatural (though hopefully not undignified) about people our age making pop music and hacking round the club circuit, but that's what we do. It's better than being referred to as a Heritage Act - heritage acts present themselves as the embalmed remnants of a bygone era . We try to keep moving.
We both started out during the punk era and continue to embrace the DIY ethic. As with our other records we recorded this album in our own studio, and played all the instruments ourselves. Except that this time we had some help from Chris Butler (of Waitresses fame) who played drums on several tracks.
The stories and the sounds piled up in layers – improvisations, personal histories, psychedelic interludes, the threat of disco, Amy playing a dodgy Crumar Insta-Piano, Eric manipulating the sound as it went down, the past tumbling out of a box in a storage space, amplifiers in the kitchen, guitar shredding, singing, silly dancing, sombreros, age and innocence...
We work to our own schedule, and having achieved the impossible by making an album in the midst of a ridiculous touring schedule and during a massive relocation (Europe to America) we feel it would be a shame to have to wait a year or so for a record label to pick us up and programme an album release. We've got our own Southern Domestic label so all we really need to do now is raise the money to manufacture the thing.
So here we are. Hope you find something of interest.
Simple (and sorry for just posting FAQs now - the same info in "Updates" may be hard to find by now) - with any pledge of $25 and over you'll get a free download of the album, vocals included.
All postage is included in the pledge amount. We have friends at the post office (not that it'll make any difference with the shipping costs...but we'll have a nice time down there when we put your rewards in the mail).
So bring a spouse or friend you're willing to bunk with, or come on your own - the B&B reward is good for a single or couple.
We stay in a lot of places and think it must be an interesting challenge to run a decent B&B. This is a chance to do that on a limited basis, for people who at very least have taste in music.
We're astonished to have reached our goal in just under a week. We aimed low because we couldn't risk not making our goal and going back to square one. And we could never have imagined the response. The album is already made, we're excited about it, we've started booking dates in the US and UK for the fall, and time waits for no man.
Even though we've reached the target we only have the bare minimum needed to master & manufacture CDs and vinyl, pay for artwork processing, a publicist to spread the word etc...
We've still got plenty of rewards and two weeks left to go so feel free to keep pledging - let's see how far we can go with this!
