My name is David Savedge and I am a blacksmith and artist. I started smithing and metal work as a child and trained with a journeyman blacksmith at Jamestown Settlement and a master brass founder at Colonial Williamsburg. I have finally built a basic shop on my farm, Ravenstead. It's a simple shop reminiscent of the 17th century shop I worked in at Jamestown.
Ravenstead is my home and family business with smithing becoming a bigger part of what I do to provide. This current project will help better establish the blacksmithing shop at Ravenstead.
When I'm not working on the farm or smithing I'm thinking about games and gaming. I love classic tabletop role-playing games.
I had a blast making my last Kickstarter Project, Forged Iron Protection Runes: A Tabletop RPG Token
I am excited to share my new project, Dragon Scales: A Tabletop RPG Game of Chance! It is a combination of my two favorite things, gaming and blacksmithing. I am presenting the game in a fantasy setting here, but I already have plans to use this in a Sci-Fi Campaign taking place in a seedy space station cantina. Dragon Scales truly fits into any RPG!
Dragon Scales is a rune based game of chance for use with any Role Playing Game System. The rules are straightforward and designed to favor the adventurer, inspiring excitement and fun. The game is played with six handmade runes that are cast across your favorite tavern table. Place your wager then the runes are cast and re-cast until one remains face up or all blank. If all are blank, it's a draw. If one remains face up then you will consult a results table in the printed rules. The game comes with a printed color graphic quick reference card and the two page black and white printed rules that include examples of play and a background of Dragon Scales.
I am offering rune sets of wood, iron, and brass. Each set comes with a cloth drawstring bag and a copy of the rules.
Speaking of hoards, the money I earn with this project will go towards improving my blacksmith shop and developing my Etsy Store. Anything left over will go towards coal for the forge and other consumables such as metal files, wire brushes, and metal stock.
It's time for an add-on!
With this add-on you will receive a hand-crafted leather drawstring pouch for your runes that also doubles as a casting tray. The pouch is made from vegetable tanned, 2-3 ounce leather. Using natural tanning methods makes this leather soft with a good hand feel. Unlike chromium tanned leather, this will not corrode your metal runes. I have oiled the leather to make it even softer and more pliable. The drawstring is strong 3/16 inch, round leather cord with a copper toggle. The cord is finished at the ends with a figure eight knot. This pouch will easily hold more than two dozen runes. When you are ready to start playing Dragon Scales just open the bag, leaving the edges curled up, and cast your runes! No more chasing a wayward cast across the table!
I will have a limited number of the leather pouches so please contact me before adding to your original pledge.
Here's how to add-on:
1. Click the “manage your pledge” button on the project’s page.
2. Increase your pledge by the amount needed to claim the add-on. $30.00
3. Save your pledge. You don't need to change the tier of your original pledge.
A single leather bag should not change the amount of shipping so no worries there!
Shipping: Unlike my last project I will be offering shipping both domestically and internationally. All of the rewards will be shipped via USPS, either First Class Package/Thick Envelope or Priority Small Flat Rate Box. If the combined weight of the rewards is greater than 15 oz. I will use the Priority Small Flat Rate Box.
First class and priority international shipping from the US is expensive but I will not be using an overseas distributor or freight services. This project will go from my forge, to my workshop, then up the road to the post office. I apologize for the expense of shipping and I truly appreciate your support!

Risks and challenges
I have carefully estimated my time and available resources; i.e. coal, metal, tools, wood, and the occasional cup of mead. The only hurdle I will have to overcome is finding enough downed, dead wood for the wooden rune sets. I have a couple of hundred acres to scout and harvest so I'm confident I can find the wood needed. Barring a freak accident I can have everyone's reward delivered by the end of February. I have confidence in this project so I have already begun production of the promised rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
