"The Staying Kind" is a story about a young woman, Florence, who is left behind by her husband in the American Civil War. Their son, Victor, understands why his father isn't coming home and cares for his mother through her own attempts to do the same. In order to cope with the dire circumstances surrounding the farm, Florence's delusions become her comfort until she is faced with a very difficult decision: leave the farm and everything she and Charles have built together to find solace in a new life or stay behind and risk everything for hope in a house that is no longer a home.
What are we doing? We are trying to raise enough money to begin principal photography on our short film, "The Staying Kind." Preproduction is already in full gear with many folks donating their time and energy. We are hoping to shoot in Alabama in November of this year. If we reach our financial goal of $5k (which is the budget with most people working for free) we will be able to afford to shoot the film on a shoestring budget. If we raise more than our goal, we will be able to pay those who have generously agreed to work for free. (**Most short films with high production value cost between $30k-$100k**)
Where can I learn more about the project? Please visit our official website, www.thestayingkindfilm.com! There you can read filmmaker bios, cast bios, view mood boards and read a full synopsis of the story.
Is my pledge amount publicly displayed? No, only you and the project creator will be able to see your pledge amount.
If I donate, when can I redeem the reward? That's a great question. All rewards, big and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after our deadline we will start to manufacture and ship all physical merchandise directly to you. The other rewards can only happen after the film is completed so this will take a bit of time. Bear with us!
Can I increase my pledge once it's been made? Yes! Just go to Kickstarter and sign in to your account. Find our campaign page where you will see the green "Back This Project" button has been replaced with a blue "Manage Your Donation" button. Click is and you can enter a new amount or shop around for a different reward.
Can we go over the budgeted goal? Yes, and what a wonderful thing that would be! We have set our goal at the low end so if we are able to go beyond it, our film will have even more possibilities.
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time? If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, well... let's not go there!
I'm not in the US. Can I still pledge to projects? Yes. You can pledge from anywhere in the world.
Who does the money go to? Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly into "The Staying Kind" film production budget - i.e. Your money goes directly to the funding of this film. We've broken down the budget in the pie chart below for you to better understand.
We are grateful you've landed here today. I'm Rachel Hendrix and I am the writer and producer of the short film THE STAYING KIND.
As much as acting is my passion, all parts of the filmmaking body interest me. During my down time, and understanding the challenges actors face in between jobs, I set out to begin creating my own content to challenge myself by imagining stories with strong female protagonists since only about 13% of the top films in the last 5 years had them.
Even though I've kept a journal and written about the adventure of acting for many years, I felt it was time to step outside of my comfort zone and begin writing for the screen, something I've always been inspired to do. After locking myself in a room for 12 hours, the idea for THE STAYING KIND was born.
I didn't expect this kind of response. I am blown away by the support of people who believe in "The Staying Kind" enough to get involved. Like we mentioned in the video, with the help of friends in the film/television industry and family connections in Alabama, principle photography is scheduled to begin in November.
We have a specific vision for the mood of the story and were thrilled to secure the location, a late 1800s southern farm house. These shots were taken on location in Dothan, Alabama where we will be shooting.
We have a strong cast of carefully selected local Atlanta actors attached to THE STAYING KIND. For full actor bios and list of credits, visit www.thestayingkindfilm.com.
Our production team is currently in the process of casting the remaining supporting roles and securing crew members, but so far we have an amazing team attached! (our crew is pictured below in no particular order)
Isaac Dietz is an award winning writer/director/producer that has had success and recognition in almost all forms of filmmaking from #1 music videos on MTV and VH1, nationally aired television documentaries, award winning short films, webisodes with over 5 million collective views and hundreds of promotional videos. Isaac has done video in the music industry for over ten years and has worked with a variety of different artists including Family Force 5, Toby Mac, and two-time Grammy winner Lecrae.
Chris Fenner - our brilliant cinematographer who we can't say enough good things about so we won't even try. You can view samples of his work in the video below.

I want to extend a special thanks for Milya for providing the lovely tunes in our video. You are amazing and we love you!
Risks and challenges
THE STAYING KIND began preproduction in March 2015 and will begin principal photography in November. In order to maintain the unique look and feel of the Civil War era, we have been working endlessly to gather and secure a location, props, wardrobe, and other items to fit into Florence and Victor's world and make this film as authentic as possible.
We are so excited to be shooting in the city of Dothan, Alabama and are believing our $5k of raised resources will cover all the costs. We are thrilled that Landmark Park is allowing us to shoot on the property, but we will be challenged by it not being a closed location. Since the park is open to the public, we are having to hiring extra team members to keep the visitors from walking into shots, using excessive noise, etc. We don't anticipate this will be a huge problem, but it is a possible hindrance.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising platform. That means, if we don’t raise our full $5,000.00 goal, we don’t get to keep any of it! We believe the heartbeat of THE STAYING KIND is important, and we want to get it out into the world as soon as possible. The success of this Kickstarter campaign will have a huge impact on the film.
