Maybe you already knew that the book was written by an alienated Jew in the storied coffeehouses of Vienna -- the Vienna of Freud, of Klimt, of the Blue Danube.
Maybe you knew, too, that Bambi's author also clandestinely wrote "The Diary of a Viennese Whore," a scandalous piece of turn-of-the-century smut.
Maybe you suspect that the two works have more in common than they might at first reveal. Little Lord also suspects. And confirms. And inspects. And unearths. And upturns. And out comes something entirely new.
Little Lord's BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS will be presented at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn in March 2015. Please join us in supporting the project and helping to spread the word!
Based on an unlikely duo of works by the Viennese-Jewish author Felix Salten: the pornographic faux memoir "Josefine Mutzenbacher, The Life Story of a Viennese Whore," and his arguably more famous novel "Bambi, A Life in the Woods,” BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS will be a caffeinated ride through coffeehouse culture, the birth of psychoanalysis, political Zionism, persecution complex, sexualized rabbits, the Sound of Music, and everyone’s favorite baby deer.
In March of 2015, BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS will receive a three-week run as part of the Brick Theater’s Inaugural Resident Artist program. Hoping to help fill the void by the closure of spaces like the Incubator Arts Project, the Brick’s new Resident Artist Program offers select artists exclusive use of their space in order to foster risk-taking and provide the resources needed to realize artistic visions without compromise. It is an honor to be selected in this first cohort.
We’re thrilled to be back at the Brick, where we’ll be taking out the risers, pulling down the lights, and turning the space into a pop-up makeshift Viennese cafe, complete with coffee specialities (Nescafe) and authentic Austrian pastries (Toaster Strudel).
After nearly a year of research and development, we are so excited to bring in the audience, but we can’t do it without your support. Your pledge will help bring BAMBIF*CKER / KAFFEEHAUS out of the rehearsal room and onto its feet. Levels of giving are suggestions only. You can give any amount your heart desires. ANY and EVERY gift is an enormous help to us.
A huge thank you to everyone who has stood up in this past year to get involved with Little Lord. You’re the best.
Little Lord’s producing model alternates between workshop and production years. After a successful run of Pocahontas, and/or America at The Bushwick Starr in 2013, we have spent 2014 researching and developing our newest play, BAMBIF*CKER/ KAFFEEHAUS. We have been fortunate enough to receive two Creative Space grants from A.R.T./New York, which have allowed us to hold two exploratory workshops in March and October of 2014.
This month, we begin our second workshop dedicated towards building the script, with an eye towards a private showing (with snacks!) on November 2nd (see Perks). Rehearsals for BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEHAUS will begin in February 2015. Our two-week run at the Brick will allow us to radically reimagine the space, stripping it of many vestiges of a “theater,” and actively embrace the event-specific nature of the live performance by building a (semi) working coffeehouse in the space. We also hope that this show can have a life past this presentation, as a mobile theater/cafe able to pop-up in empty storefronts, disused basement, and other spaces throughout the Eastern seaboard. While we’ve transformed theaters into basement Bat Mitzvah karaoke parties and roadside attraction museums in the past, we’ve never built a Viennese cafe that also doubles as a forest, therapy couch, flophouse, ballroom, and meadow!
- Bambi was a (German language) book well before it was an animated Disney movie.
- The guy who wrote Bambi also wrote a pornographic faux memoir about a Viennese prostitute, ages 5 - 13.
- That memoir was made into over twenty pornographic films. The most popular one is Sensational Janine.
- Bambi is the most common alias used by pornographic actresses and exotic dancers.
- The author of Bambi was a member of the Jung Wien, a literary circle of artists who congregated regularly in Vienna’s coffeehouses. He also wrote articles for a Zionist newspaper.
- Bambi was banned by the Nazis as a Jewish allegory.
- The waltz was considered improper.
- Bugs Bunny has dressed in drag more than forty times throughout his animated career.
- There are only 180 calories in a Pillsbury Apple Toaster Strudel (icing included!).
Little Lord, who’ve made a forte out of retelling old stories with a gender-bending, irreverent twist, are worth keeping an eye out for. – Jewcy

Little Lord is the stuff theatrical dreams are made of. – ObsceneJester
Little Lord is a Brooklyn-based company that creates vibrantly bawdy, irreverent, intelligent, queer, funny (and often musical) theater. Focusing on offbeat adaptations of classic (or neglected) texts, Little Lord plunders the theatrical canon in order to forge new plays from old parts. We aim to create an atmosphere of shared experience in which nostalgia, discovery, densely-layered cultural references, and a simultaneous delight in and irreverence towards text all combine to make exciting, relevant, challenging and fun work.
BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS is Little Lord’s 8th original piece for the theater. Other work includes Pocahontas, and/or America (Bushwick Starr 2013), Babes in Toyland Redux (Brick Theater 2011), JEWQUEEN (UNDER St Marks 2011), (oh my god I am so) THIRST(y) (Incubator Arts Project 2010, Chocolate Factory Theater 2009), Victor Herbert’s Recession Spectacular Babes in Toyland (OHIO Theater Ice Factory 2009), BALABUSTAS (!) (HERE 2007), and Barbiesteia: Curse of the House of Malibu (OHIO Theater/Target Margin 2007).
Little Lord is proud to have built a community of talented artists. We are so happy that many of our past collaborators have returned to join the BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS ensemble.
We are still putting together our full team, but so far these fine folks are on board!Ka-Ling Cheung! Richard Drake!Joshua William Gelb! Anne Gridley! Elizabeth Barrett Groth! Polly Lee! Michael Levinton! Rodney Pallanck! Natalie Robin! Laura von Holt!Stephanie Weeks! And more to come!
