                                               ____________

The Switch Port has a new home:

                                                    www.theswitchport.com

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A light switch could be useful.  You use it and pass by it constantly.  It's never far away.

The Switch Port is a light switch you can write on.  It's just like a normal light switch, but the surface is enameled in an epoxy which doesn't absorb ink.

It's great for reminders.  When you walk out the door and switch the lights, there it is.

Messages are impossible to miss.  They're sort of fun, too.

It's the best spot for fleeting ideas.  If you get an idea, your light switch is always right there.

Sometimes, light switches are good for drawing.  But people who tried out prototypes used them for all sorts of things (jokes, quotes, "turn off the lights").

The Switch Port itself is just one piece of material.  It goes through five laser-cutting and CNC milling operations, each one removing material, until only a light switch cover is left.  The top edge is beveled towards the wall to create a ledge for the marker.

It installs easily.  The mounting hardware is already in the wall and two additional light switch screws are included in the package.

In the box:

- A Switch Port.  CNC milled and laser-cut light switch cover enameled in epoxy.

- A marker.  Expo's fine point.

- Two light switch screws.  In case you need them.

- A 1/16" thick, laser-cut piece of balsa.  Each light switch is different, so the Switch Port's ledge occasionally isn't wide enough to hold the marker.  The balsa is tucked in between the wall and the top of the Switch Port to provide an extra 1/16" of ledge.

There are four types of Switch Ports:

For a single, toggle switch ($12) - 14.6 cm. by 9.6 cm.
For a single, toggle switch ($12) - 14.6 cm. by 9.6 cm.
For a single, rocker switch ($12) - 14.6 cm. by 9.6 cm.
For a single, rocker switch ($12) - 14.6 cm. by 9.6 cm.
For a double, toggle switch ($14) - 14.6 cm. by 19.0 cm.
For a double, toggle switch ($14) - 14.6 cm. by 19.0 cm.
For a double, rocker switch ($14) - 14.6 cm. by 19.0 cm.

A month-long school project usually takes 15 hours.  The Switch Port: 1,000 hours.  It's been four years in the making.  It's gone through more than 100 versions.  It started as 8 parts and ended as one part.  It's had advisors from Google, Harvard, and Facebook.  But products can't be useful on paper.

Finally.  Here it is.

Risks and challenges

There are three main risks:
1. Dry-erase epoxy not setting correctly. Rough probability: 10% per application. Next move: New shipment of epoxy and reapplication. Delay: No delay to Early Bird rewards. If occurs more than once, two-week delay to normal rewards.
2. Expo discontinuing their custom dry-erase markers (rumored). Rough probability: 10%. Next move: Ordering the same markers, except with the Expo logo printed on them. Delay: None.
3. Laser-cutter or CNC mill break down. Rough probability: 2%. Next move: Repairing machine (80% chance) or moving to backup facility. Delay: 1-3 months.

Overall (rough) probability of early December rewards shipping on time:
98%

Overall (rough) probability of April rewards shipping on time:
97%
