UPDATE 6/6/16: Thanks to everyone who helped me raise $1,500! Please see the "update" page for information on stretch goals!
Back in 2012 I made a site called J.J.’s Complete Guide to Canada. It sought to offer clear, easy-to-read, well-researched informative, non-biased, honest articles on everything you could possibly want to know about Canada, including Canadian history, Canadian symbols, Canadian politics, Canadian food, and lots more.
Over the past four years, my site has steadily risen to become one of the net’s most referenced sources of information about Canada. It consistently tops Google search results, and is constantly cited by students and journalists.
So what's the problem?
After four years, the site is starting to look a bit dated.
I made the site myself using a Wordpress template, but frankly, web design is not my strong suit.
The information is solid, but people make judgements about how seriously to take information based on how it’s presented. I am planning to recruit a professional web designer to give the Canada Guide a complete redesign into something that looks super slick and professional.
A new design will also allow me to integrate new visual features like better charts, maps, and infographics. And hopefully some interactive features, too. So the site will not only look better, but the information content will improve as well.
Part two is less glamorous. I’ve been with the same web host for many years, who offered me a really great deal. Unfortunately, he is now getting out of the hosting game, and I am having to go with a new, more expensive host. So I’m looking for some help with that transition too.
Can you help me?
This is not the most glamorous Kickstarter in the world. There are no prizes and no gimmicks. All I am looking for is a bit of financial help with a project I have really enjoyed working on over the last four years, and am really hoping to make even better going forward.
I really want to make J.J.’s Complete Guide to Canada continue to be the best site on the net for clear and comprehensive information about everything to do with this country. It’s been a great four years so far, and with your help we can go even further.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is simply that the redesign process may take a while. I have a lot of big ambitions for what I want the site to be, and as I work with the web designer it may take a couple months before the revamped Canada Guide is ready to go public.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
