A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

There is nothing more relaxing than enjoying the outdoors in a hammock. Unfortunately, there are limited places to hang them. In fact, the places you most want to use them (beach, tailgating, lakeside, your own backyard, etc.) often lack places to hang the hammock. Trees are not everywhere, and even when they are around, they may not be the right distance apart. Most hammock stands on the market today are heavy and are not portable and/or only accommodate a specific hammock. I set out to defeat this problem by creating a hammock stand that could be taken and set-up anywhere.
The Go Anywhere Hammock stands are beyond an idea or prototype. They are a refined design that is ready for use. I have spent the last 2 years testing and refining the stands from lessons learned over many uses under different load conditions and settings. The final design has been validated through stress calculations and multiple uses at different locations over the last year.
The stands are made from Aircraft grade Aluminum alloy tubing and flat bar stock which is a common material that is readily available. The other attachment parts are made from high strength, non-corrosive steel which are also readily available materials. Finally, the exterior finish parts consist of high quality plastics and rubber. A pair of stands weigh under 5 lbs and are 4 feet tall each. The entire kit shown below weighs under 10 lbs.

The GAH stands are designed to hold up to 400 lbs, however, the actual weight limit will be determined by how well the ground anchors are set. The earth anchors that come with the GAH stands are 30 inches long. Ground conditions can vary greatly from hard to soft soil or sandy conditions. The ensure a strong hold, the ideal installation depth of the anchor is where the eye is at ground level as shown in the video, however, there will be times when this can’t be achieved. To accommodate scenarios where the anchor’s eye can’t be twisted all the way to ground level a beam clamp is also provided to create a grasping point for the GAH stand, carabiner clip as shown in the photo below.
There are essentially three main steps in any product creation including design, manufacturing, and distribution. The final hammock stand design has been completed and validated as described earlier and I already have multiple sources available to acquire the raw materials from. Regarding manufacturing, I purposely designed these stands to require minimal machining operations and made them easy to assemble. My plan is to perform the manufacturing operations using tooling templates and assembly techniques that I have developed during my design efforts. In the event that the demand for these stands exceeds my capacity to fulfill my commitments in a timely manner then I can involve one of several machine shops that I have developed relationships with over the last 2 plus decades in my regular career. Lastly, I have already defined and selected the packaging needed to securely ship the stands using readily available products. The shipping costs can be seen at checkout when backing a project level. In the event that the quantity of stands purchased exceeds my capacity to fulfill my commitments in a timely manner then I would utilize a fulfillment service such as Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).

Risks and challenges
The Go Anywhere Hammock Stand is a low risk project. The design is complete and has been refined over time based on lessons learned.
Each design iteration was first validated through stress calculations then over multiple uses with varying weights. The stands are made from common sources and materials and there is minimal machining and assembly operations involved.
The main risk in this design is time delays with raw material procurement as stock levels can fluctuate. Be assured that I will work hard at bringing a great product in a timely manner to all of my customers.
