About

OUR MANIFESTO:

Loquacious Placemat is here to resuscitate the lost traditions of the broadsheet, the pamphlet, the scribble and the screed. The
central idea is to get writing off of the shelves, out of the drawers and into the streets.

We want to give literary fiction the power to ambush the public. We want our stories to be read by as broad a range of people as possible. If this means that it is read through a haze of cigarette smoke, gets splashed with coffee or stained with whiskey, then so much the better!

Our words can live long, healthy and quiet lives nestled away in the literary corners of the internet; they deserve to be lovingly bound in traditional journals and stored on the shelves of connoisseurs and academics. They need, however, to get out every once in a while. We want to give the works published in Loquacious Placemat the opportunity to get tattered around the edges, folded in fourths and stuffed in someone's back pocket.

Loquacious Placemat is here to put strange words in front of those who would not otherwise seek them out. Out in the world, we will be something not easily defined; something a little strange put out there with the hopes that our strangeness will rub off on the world.

A BIT OF HISTORY:

In July of 2009, the first issue of Loquacious Placemat hit the internet and the streets of Allentown, PA. Over the course of three issues, Loquacious Placemat presented unique and interesting fiction from around the world in a unique broadsheet format that provided a much needed shot of guerrilla literature to the world at large.

Alas, while Loquacious Placemat was a wild success from an artistic perspective, it was not the most well thought out of business ventures. It was born of an artistic caprice, submissions solicited on the spur of a moment and the publication itself forced into being by the sheer force of the response received.

After a year, life intruded on this bizarre venture and the magazine has been on hiatus since.

THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

2012. Loquacious Placemat is stirring once more. With an eye towards a May 2013 re-launch, we are planning to do things right this time. As far as our delightful blend of moxie and idealism got us the last time around, we are looking for something more enduring.  A more measured approach is required. So what do we hope to do with the money raised from this campaign?

2 Equally Important Things:

1. Printing and distribution costs. Our $5,500 dollar goal will enable us to accomplish all of the above and cover our printing and distribution cost for a 1 year 6 issue run of the broadsheet. The goal is an average print run of about 2000 copies per issue. At the end of this 1 year 6 issue run, we will decide whether to try perpetuating the publication via advertising or mount a Volume 2 Kickstarter campaign.

1a. Pay our contributors. The first incarnation of Loquacious Placemat was a non-paying venue for writers to get exposure. Exposure is nice, but in this delightful economy, we feel it's imperative that artists be paid for their work. With this campaign, plan to establish a fund of approximately $200 dollars per issue to to compensate authors.

Risks and challenges

This is a project that is wonderfully free of significant pitfalls. Much of what we aspire to do was successfully done on a smaller scale with a lack funding having been the most significant issue.

That said, increasing the size of the endeavor will probably present its own opportunities for innovation and improvement. The switch to being a paying market for writers will lead to an increase in the number of submissions which the editorial staff is ready to handle, with friends and family from the literary community waiting in the wings to help out if deadlines appear to be in jeopardy.

Other than that, all the resources needed to make this happen are in place. We've identified a local graphic designer who will be able to help with the visual elements. The editorial staff is in place and has been chomping at the bit for about a year now. All we need now are some authors, some readers and you.

    ---The Grammar Police Special---

There are those on staff who insist that "Placemat" is not a word. The proper name of the magazine according to the dictionary should be "Loquacious Place Mat". We at Loquacious Placemat are on the fence about whether or not to correct this minor error. Some think it's quirky and/or irrelevant. Others think it is an abomination on the order of spelling "cheese" with a "z".

    Do you have an opinion?

    A really strong opinion?

For $100 dollars, you get everything in the $35 dollar tier, the opportunity to cast the deciding vote, and a letter of gratitude from those staff members whose position you endorse.

**While delivery of the physical rewards will be slated for May 2013, we'll be asking you to decide the grammar issue as soon as funding is completed so the correct spelling is used in the redesign.**
