SELECT PRAISE FOR SEASONS
From Other Comics Creators...
“I am really glad you sent [SEASONS] my way. It looks really cool, and I can’t wait to see it unfold. VERY strong start.”
- Brian Michael Bendis (Modern-day Marvel Comics legend and writer of Ultimate Spider-Man, Secret Invasion, New Avengers, Avengers, Alias, Powers, Daredevil, Uncanny X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, and many, many more)
“You guys are making a strong comic and I love finding new stuff that I'm shocked at when I see the quality. It's rare in the webcomic world. I can't wait to follow what you guys do.”
- Jason Brubaker (Highly successful self-publishing comics creator of reMIND, SITHRAH, and Unnatural Talent)
"With lovingly detailed and textured art in a style not unlike what you might see from a Sean Gordon Murphy or James Harren comic in the stores today, SEASONS asked me to take a breath, to step inside a frame of mind that was all too familiar, and to recall the excitement and angst that comes along with the territory. Beneath the daydreams and obsessions (and the self-torment that must always balance them), I discovered a psychological exploration of the strange and the unknown that reminded me of Twin Peaks, Alan Wake, or Legion, while tugging on thematic threads one might find in Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground. It is very much its own story though, and I can tell it was written because it had to be written. And to me, that means it demands my attention.”
- Levi Hoffmeier (Creator, writer and artist of the gorgeous sci-fi comic series Mayflower, which you can check out at mayflowercomic.com)
From Readers of SEASONS...
“I LOVE your concept for SEASONS and subscribed to the newsletter. I really dig the art style. It's the kind of comic I wish there were more of. This may sound strange, but there's a certain... warmth to the sketches? It just feels like it would be an intelligent piece of work. Like something you'd see advertised in The New Yorker.”
“Just finished reading all the pages on the site. You sir, have an amazing talent. Props to your illustrator, too. You two work in tandem to create one great comic.”
“I have to say that the art is pretty impressive, and I don't normally like B&W comics. Nicely done!”
“And yet another comic to add to my list! I really like this, I love the story, the art, I just love it! I think it would be worth buying this if I ever saw it on the shelf. You definitely deserve the money.”
After graduating from high-school, reality started to sink in. My entire life was ahead of me, and the one nagging thought in my head was, “Don’t waste it.” What was I going to do next? Who was I going to be, and what mark did I want to leave on the world? I somewhat knew I wanted to make a living as a writer since I loved the craft, but write what? Articles for journalism companies and sites? Novels? Screenplays, maybe? Then I glanced around my room at all the graphic novels on my bookshelf and posters of heroic figures on my walls. This got me thinking, "Could I write comic books?" Hmm…didn’t someone need a degree or years of experience to even take a stab at this sort of thing, anyways? Surely not, right? And that’s when it hit me: I really want to try this. I could do this. I had a dream, you could say, and more than anything? I had a story to tell, and I knew I was the only one in the world who could tell it.
The date was December 31st, 2014 — the motivating turn of a new year quickly approaching — and I was only 17 years old when I wrote down my first ideas for the graphic novel series I would later entitle, SEASONS.
SEASONS began as most comic projects usually do: a pitch to submit to a big-name comics publisher. It would be one interconnected story told in four parts, a limited maxiseries spanning 16 issues that would release on a monthly basis…or so I once hoped. Not surprisingly — since most initial projects submitted by unknowns rarely appear to be taken — I’ve yet had a publisher grant me this chance and so I’ve decided to bring SEASONS to Kickstarter, with the prospect of self-publishing seeming to be an even more fulfilling endeavor to pursue for numerable reasons. Being inspired and encouraged by other self-publishers in the business, I truly believe SEASONS can be one of these successes brought about by its fans.
SEASONS is an original, creator-owned comic book drama for readers who want be a part of a deep and serious one year journey that will challenge how they look at themselves, others and the world around them. The story of SEASONS revolves around one character, Fletcher Hart Iiams, a misunderstood, average young man who isn’t happy with his life anymore and has run away from almost everything and everyone. The entirety of this series will span over one year of Fletcher’s life as SEASONS will be four separate but interconnected stories that follow the seasons of the year. The title has a two-fold meaning: the seasons of the year and the “seasons” people go through throughout their lives. There will be four graphic novel stories — Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter — and each storyline deals with a combination of different obstacles, enemies, themes and problematic situations the main character will have to face all set in real time. Fletcher is given a new set of powers with every seasonal transition as well; as the world changes, so does he and his abilities. It is an allegorical character study piece ultimately about finding a reason to live in this world that will drag you down with it if you let it.

ABOUT SEASONS Volume 1: Spring
The game plan is to release SEASONS in four separate physical volumes — Vol. 1: Spring, Vol. 2: Summer, Vol. 3: Fall, Vol. 4: Winter. This Kickstarter project is specifically to fund for printing 500 copies of SEASONS Vol. 1: Spring, the very first volume in the series. We want to get this debut high-quality hardcover copy of SEASONS in YOUR hands.
SEASONS Volume 1: Spring includes the first four issues of SEASONS, the first story arc of the series, and will be 130-140 pages total, including a special Foreward by the well-renowned independent comics creator, Jason Brubaker (reMIND, Sithrah, Unnatural Talent) himself. The smooth matte finish will feature an embossed design as well for professional presentation quality. This volume introduces us to Fletcher Hart Iiams, the leading protagonist we’ll be following throughout the series. This begins his personal story and the start to the one year journey that will define him. This volume also introduces us to pivotal characters in the series, supernatural entities known as the “shadow-selves” and a set of incredible, unnatural powers Fletcher himself doesn’t understand.
Fletcher Hart Iiams: A young man running from his past who feels totally misunderstood. Working two jobs he doesn’t like, estranged from his family, and lovestruck by a woman who barely notices him, Fletcher’s life is turned upside down on one fateful evening when a shadowy man who resembles him is birthed from his own heart and soul.
Cathlyn McClure Parish: Friend, secret love interest and co-worker of Fletcher’s. Will his future vision of her marrying a different man come true?
Fletcher’s Family: Fletcher’s parents and younger brother — Gregory, Victoria, and Tyler Iiams. SEASONS Volume 1: Spring sees Fletcher strangely reunited with his family in what has been months without seeing each other.
The Shadow-Selves: Beings of unconstrained emotion and shadow. With no sense of morality or shame, these shadow-selves wreck unseen havoc everywhere they lurk.
Fletcher’s Shadow-Self: The main antagonist of SEASONS Vol. 1. Who is he? What does he want and what does his presence mean for Fletcher? Read on to find out…
WHAT THE FUNDS WILL BE USED TOWARDS
I need $6,500 to completely fund this campaign and below I’ve laid out the percentages and specifics for how much everything will cost. This way backers know exactly what their support will be used towards. As you can see, 80-85% of the funds will be used for printing and shipping costs. The rest is for the additional fees and taxes that come up (each expense in rounded up to its nearest figure and are the most accurate estimations I was able to gather).
I know it’s a large amount of money to raise in 40 days, but I’m trusting we can all come together to hit this goal before the deadline. For instance, if all 500 backers only pledged towards the lowest reward tier of $20, we’d hit $10,000 easily. Or, if only 325 backers pledged $20, we’d just make the goal (which doesn’t even include the 175 potential backers left!). That’s the beauty of crowdfunding. We can do this!
*Important information for backers*
All single graphic novel domestic orders will be charged an additional $4 for shipping.
The other additional shipping costs for international backers are as follows, and you’ll be prompted for the additional cost when you place your order.
Canada — placed order + $17
Mexico — placed order + $22
U.K. — placed order + $24
Everywhere else around the world —placed order + $25
I apologize for how much extra shipping requires. I wish there was some way to get around this, but, unfortunately, there isn’t anything I can do. The upside to this is that all of the additional cost goes towards the funding goal! Note: These prices pertain to shipping one single hardcover graphic novel. The shipping cost for the original art tier ($350) will require a higher shipping fee.
From the estimates I’ve received (and if all goes according to plan), it looks like I’ll be getting the books sometime in November-December. It takes about four to five months of back and forth with the printing company before I’ll actually receive all the copies on my doorstep. The reason why so long is because I’m wanting to print SEASONS overseas in China through the one of the leading printing companies, PrintNinja. Printing overseas takes longer — thus the months of waiting — but the costs are cheaper than printing in the U.S. and I’m told the professional quality will be worth the wait as well. During those months, I’ll be reviewing their progress and the hard copy proofs they’ll be sending me. I’ll definitely be updating everyone on how everything is going through this entire process.
Curious to know what PrintNinja is all about? Just click on the banner below to check out their website and resources. I hope they impress you as much as they did me!
WHY BACK THIS KICKSTARTER?
I get it, though. We’re unknown, rookie fish in the competitive, rough seas that is the independent comic book business. We’ve never made a big break professionally or had lunch with top execs or editors who drooled over our ideas. Why trust us with your hard-earned bucks then? While it’s true Anthony and I don’t have that going for us, what we do have is this one-of-a-kind story to tell. What we do have is already something to show for our efforts, and what we have to show is something worthwhile and of value. I truly hope that speaks for itself.
So why back this Kickstarter? Well, for starters, by the end of this first story arc, I will have put in over $12,000 of my own money into SEASONS. That covers all art expenses, money spent on advertising, as well as paying and owning the website for the book itself. It all adds up, and I’ve honestly still yet to make any money at all from pursuing this. Secondly, I’m not asking to make thousands of dollars off SEASONS nor did I ever expect to. I just had a dream and a strong passion to fulfill and I’d love it for you to be a part of that. The success of this campaign will only further fuel my commitment to this project. Finally, you wouldn’t be paying for me to write or make SEASONS. That’s what’s so unique about this campaign and the series as a whole — I’ve already finished writing SEASONS. For the past year-and-a-half or so, I’ve been spending hours upon hours every day writing the series, and I’m proud to say I finished writing it this past March. All four arcs have been entirely scripted! So with this Kickstarter, you’d be paying solely for the printing and shipping of SEASONS Volume 1: Spring. In other words, you wouldn’t be backing this Kickstarter or paying me to create/write it, you’d be backing this campaign to make it a physical reality, to bring it to life. So don’t worry if there’s an ending to Fletcher’s journey or if this thing’s gonna get done. It will just as long as I have the money and resources. And if this successfully funds, rest assured I’ll be bringing the other three ‘seasons’ to Kickstarter as well. That way we can all go along on Fletcher’s one year journey together.
I’ve personally put everything I have into this book and went so far as to postpone my college degree to follow through with this dream. I didn’t want to wait four years before I could be told, “Now you can write something that will actually matter.” I’ve been waiting for so long to share SEASONS with the world, and I hope you’ll pledge today to accomplish that. This is what I have a heart for and meeting this goal would literally change my entire life in almost every way. I honestly can't do this without you.
Thank you so much!!! Now let's knock this campaign out of the park!
~ N. Fox
Nandor Fox Shaffer grew up with superheroes, Star Wars, movies, video games, music and comic books coursing through his veins and spinning about in his imagination. It wasn’t only until a few years ago where he heard the call to be a writer and creator, wanting to tell stories that really meant something and that touched people. Inspired by the likes of George Lucas, Jonathan Hickman, Steven Moffat, Ed Brubaker, Scott McCloud and a few other talents, he couldn’t resist how powerful the art of storytelling could be. At the age of 19, SEASONS is his first ever creative venture and hopes it will resonate with those who check it out. He lives in Jefferson City, Missouri and plans to write and create for as long as he is able to.
Anthony Gonzales-Clark has worked in fast food, various department stores, back office work, was an electrician, a telemarketer, an appliance salesman, a banker, an Uber driver, now, he gets paid to draw comics. Living in Los Angeles all his life, trying to find meaning in this frantic city, ignoring the politically ignorant, seedy, laid-back academia, all he wanted to do was expand on his artistic endeavors. Self taught with no professional experience, everything he learned, he learned through action, multiple failures and mistakes. Without the support of friends and family through God, especially the awe-inspiring support his wife Karina, whom God has so fit to bless him, this path would have been impossible. Passionate about his craft, and starting to realize his potential, he is only getting more excited about the endless possibilities ahead.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter, and to say I have no fears regarding the massive undertaking a project like this requires wouldn’t be the truth. But then again, isn’t conquering any and all fears, risks and challenges of a dream and passion what it’s all about?
Kickstarter uses an All-or-Nothing crowdfunding system. Meaning, if we don’t meet the $6,500 goal, then none of the money pledged will go towards the printing of the book and I will receive $0 for printing, shipping, and distributing SEASONS. As you can imagine, this would be a near fatal blow for the book and series in general, so I’m solely dependent upon its backers to make this dream come true. Without you, SEASONS will barely exist.
From what I can tell, printing the book shouldn’t be much of a challenge when all is said and done. It helps that SEASONS Vol. 1: Spring is 80-90% finished and, while any delays or setbacks are possible, they are highly unlikely for this project. We promise we will go above and beyond to make this entire process as smooth as possible. Believe us, we want this book on our shelves just as bad. :)
The one big challenge for this project will be the shipping process from my home to each individual backer. It’s not going to be a walk in the park to ship hundreds of books with all the additional rewards included, but with friends and family, I should be able to knock it out in a timely fashion (shipping parties will most definitely be documented and held!).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
