About

ENG: Journey means approach. Especially in this period in which the most of the people is afraid of the refugees we need an approach to look with our eyes what is really happening. In November 2014 a group of eighty refugees from Afghanistan and Pakistan arrived in our cold seaside town in the North-East region of Italy, Lignano Sabbiadoro. The citizens were overwhelmed by too many prejudices and our association, named Menti Libere (Free Minds) and operating in the promotion of values such as integration, respect, art and enviromental consciousness, began to organize some social activities with that group in order to convey to the city what was the real situation. After this great human experience three guys from Menti Libere, decided to undertake the refugees route backwards, from our town to the borderline between Turkey and Syria. They will travel on foot and by hitchhiking and sometimes by public transports, they’ll take around three months. Their interaction way will be the universal language of Art : at each stop they’ll unroll the big paper roll they will be bringing all along the way. Everybody will be free to express whatever he or she want and, at the end, this artwork will represent all the meeting they did during the journey. Besides they want to leave a little street art piece in every place they will cross, it will be a way to symbolically connect all the points of the route. They will depart from Lignano, our hometown, and the first border they’ll cross will be in Gorizia. Once they’ll be in Slovenia they’ll go to Ljubljana and soon after they’ll spend some days at the borderline’s point between Slovenia and Croatia : Brezice, Rigonce and Dobova. The following town will be Zagreb, from there they’ll go to Opatovac and Tovarnik and soon after they’ll cross the border. In Serbia they’ll spend some days in Belgrade and after that they’ll leave the refugee’s route for a little while in order to visit Srebrenica, Sarajevo, Visegrad (Bosnia) and Nis (Serbia). From there the travelers will cross the border in Tabanovtse and enter in Macedonia. After few days in Skopje they will go to Gevgelija where they will step on Greek soil and afterwards spend some days walking along the coast directed to Turkey. They will go to Istanbul where they will stop for two weeks in order to do an art project in a community centre for Syrian refugees managed by the NGO Support The Life. The next step will be Izmir from where they’ll take a boat to Lesbo. Once got back to Turkey they’ll go to Konya, Sufi’s capital, and to Mersin. Soon after they’ll go to Kilis where a friend of them is living and can offer his hospitaity. At that point they’ll try to find out if it will be possible to enter into Iraq’s Kurdistan. At the end we will use the illustrations collected on the paper roll, the ones made by Tommaso Sandri (Cactart), the photos took along the journey and the diaries by the three backpackers to produce a book that will document the experience. In order to put this idea in practice we decided to use the fundraising platform Kickstarter in order to collect money to print and publish the book. Therefore we ask you to travel with us following our Facebook page “Menti Libere” and, if you can, to support us here! Anyway, thanks a lot. In ogni caso, grazie.

Risks and challenges

The risk of this project will be about the safety of the three travelers and of the material that will be used for the books ( diaries, paper roll, cameras).
Regarding the first aspect, the safety of the guys, while we were planning this travel we already got in touch with some NGOs working and giving hel to refugees on our route and in case of any problem they will be avaible to help us too. Anyhow the travellers are not on their first experience and anyone of them had already travelled at least once for long time in adverse conditions.
Regarding the book's material: the paper roll used during the workshops will be photographed every time anything will be added and sometimes they will cut and send the pieces back to Italy. A backup on hard disk of the SD memory cards containing photos and videos will be often made, the material will be then sent by internet and/or with courier to Italy. The return date is located around the beginning of February and in three months we expect to have the book ready.
