NYBG’s new Edible Academy is due to break ground this October, and you can help expand our hands-on, plant-based education for local kids with a contribution to this exciting new initiative.
After more than 60 years of providing children, families, and teachers with gardening education and activities during the warmer months, the Family Garden's new facilities at the Edible Academy will—for the first time ever—allow NYBG to offer a roster of exciting year-round programs, which means we will reach even more children and their families than ever before. The new complex will include indoor classrooms, a greenhouse, an apiary to learn about the significance of bees and honey production, and an outdoor amphitheater for cooking demonstrations and theatrical productions. The Edible Academy building and campus will contain a number of sustainability features, including a green roof, composting bathroom facilities, solar panels, geothermal power, and rainwater collection.
This ambitious Family Garden expansion will provide local kids with the rare opportunity to learn, create, and explore in nature through hands-on gardening activities and other engaging educational programs.
Please help us celebrate this milestone by supporting the launch of our new Edible Academy!
Risks and challenges
When the Edible Academy breaks ground this fall, we will have to temporarily close down the Family Garden on the site where the new facility is being built. The Garden's Edible Academy staff have devised a plan to host gardening activities for children in a location elsewhere on the grounds. The Edible Academy's temporary new digs will enable us to continue offering programs to the children and families who frequently enjoy them, all while a new state-of-the-art facility is under construction.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
