And a Happy New Year if it comes to that. In fact, happy all those family type holidays you can think of around this time of year. We don't really have a present for you (unless you consider all our dedicated work a gift, which is certainly alright with us). We do, however, have a bit of news for you. So, here it goes:
The Inevitable Delay
The fact is that we, like so many other game developers, were overly ambitious with our timetable. Being optimists (especially Aaron on whom most of the blame rests, and as he's writing this I can say that) we tend to think of the “best case scenario” as “what can be expected” which is a skewed and unrealistic point of view. It's taken us a bit more time than we thought it would to get the World Map looking like we wanted and there's still a bit of graphic polish to do before the game is ready for release. However, you'll be glad to know that for the last couple of weeks we've been working on mechanics and getting things ready for the playable alpha. We are daily making progress and hope to have something more to show you soon. We think you'll agree that it's been worth the wait.
Forums & Wiki
Those of you who hang around the forums know that a great deal has been discussed and decided recently. For those of you who don't have the time or inclination I'll go through a brief list: We now have a firm units list for the Draconians, Dark Elves and Myrodants (Insectiods). The Orcs are currently the race of discussion. We've also made a number of tentative decisions on Character Creation including the point cost of the Disciplines and Spell Circles you can pick. (We've even got a number of negative Disciplines that allow you to take handicaps to get more points.) We've got Unrest and Taxation worked out and are still in the middle of discussing Terrain Bonuses. In fact, there's way too much going on to really discuss here. Fortunately most of it ends up in the Wiki once the decisions have been made. For those of you who are interested it's certainly worth giving it a read. You can take a look here: Worlds of Magic Wiki
A Little GUI:
One of the things we've been working on quite a bit is the GUIs. Needless to say they are one of the key elements to making the game accessible and the interface easy to understand. Above is the “Magic” GUI for Worlds of Magic. It's our hope that most of our MoM fans will immediately recognize a lot of what's going on with it. In-game it's going to be very “tooltipped up” and you'll be able to find out what everything does just by mousing over it. One thing you may not recognize is the “Crafting/Casting” bar. It's used to divide mana between crafting magic items and casting spells when you happen to be doing both at the same time. We also wanted to point out that you won't be able to craft a “Space Rocket” (unless Darek sneaks it in as an Easter Egg for Wojtek, lol). Still, we think you'll agree that it looks fairly good and should be easy to use.
A Bit Of Rest:
This update has run longer than I meant for it to. After all it's Christmas and we're going to be taking a bit of a holiday, just like most of you guys. (We hope that those of you who have to work are at least getting triple overtime, lol.) We should be back at work normally by January 3rd. If everything goes as we hope it will we should be able to show you something shortly after that.
