You are a Sorcerer Lord ruling a small village from the heights of your stone tower. You dream of conquering the planes and ending the War of Ascension at last. Your knowledge and power are great, but they must become greater still if you are to overcome your foes. Your empire must expand, your skill increase, your legions swell. This plane and all others will bow to your will!To put that in more quantifiable terms: Worlds of Magic is a classic 4X strategy game set in a fantasy universe. It follows in the footsteps of the game that, in many ways, defined the fantasy 4X genre: MicroProse's Master of Magic.
Primary gameplay takes place on the world map. From there you can move your armies to explore new territory, defend key positions or attack your enemies. You can gain control of additional cities by conquering them or founding new ones yourself. You manage the cities under your control, building new buildings to improve them, dedicating your work force to one task or another, and creating new military units. Your armies can be made up of units you've trained, heroes and mercenaries you've hired, and even powerful summoned creatures. When two enemy armies collide gameplay is moved to the tactical battle map where combat is played out turn by turn. During gameplay you will also research new spells, manage your economy, and deal with diplomatic situations all in an attempt to gain supreme control of the universe.
Worlds of Magic will not only seek to capture the charm of the timeless classic that serves as its inspiration, but also go beyond it in a number of areas.

04/15/2013 – George Edward Purdy, known for his work on both Master of Orion and Master of Magic has joined the Worlds of Magic team as lead artist.

04/08/2013 – In less that a week we've gotten more than a 1/3 of our goal. That's great news, but we want to keep pushing onward! We've got good momentum, but we need to pick up even more speed because we want to hit ALL of our stretch goals. We're going to start talking about our specific goals very soon. Please, try to be patient. The entire team is working its brains to the bone. (OK, so brains don't have bones... Still, you get the point.)
04/05/2013 – After just three days we've already reached 20% of our goal! Thank you all! Now, we want to do our best to keep up this momentum. Additional Factions: We want to put as many playable races as we can in Worlds of Magic. Needless to say, however, adding a new faction requires a lot of artwork. Each faction has units and buildings that are completely unique. The funding for additional factions will go to getting the artwork we need in the amount of time we have.
Additional Roaming Creatures: What are roaming creatures? Well, they're creatures that... well... roam. That is to say, they are creatures that don't fit into any society. Basilisks, cockatrice, dragons, drakes and giant snakes... (We're sure you get the idea.) Again, adding them to Worlds of Magic is going to require additional artwork (and a bit of extra code). You might find one guarding a dungeon or run into one just wandering the countryside. It most cases it will end in battle, but the very wise (or very prepared) may be able to convince the beast to join their ranks. (You can get some of them to join your army.) Roaming Creatures are one of the things we really like and we want to put more of them in the game!
A True Spiritual Successor To Master of Magic: We know and love the game that set the standard. We played it when it was new. We play it now. We want exactly what you want, a game that builds on the foundation that's already been laid. A game that adds to what Master of Magic gave us without taking things away. That is what we're aiming at with Worlds of Magic! Just browse through the rest of this feature list and see if it doesn't look just a little familiar.
DRM Free: We plan to offer DRM free copies of Worlds of Magic for sale. You'll be able to get a DRM free copy by becoming a backer or by purchasing the game after it's released. Choose from 10 Sorcerer Lords or create your own: Worlds of Magic offers players ten different pre-created Sorcerer Lords to play as or face as AI opponents, all with unique skills, powers and knowledge. If you prefer you can also create a custom Sorcerer Lord allowing you to select the circles of magic and different disciplines you will use to overthrow the planes.

Fantasy Setting: Worlds of Magic is set in a fantasized medieval
world filled with magic and fanciful creatures. You will see cites of
Elves, Dwarves and Undead. You can discover lost shrines and fallen
temples guarded by towering giants or fearsome dragons. The world
will span a number of different planes each of which can be explored
8 Playable Factions: Select one race to be the founders of your empire. Overthrow others and make them serve you or raze their cities to the ground. Each faction has unique units along with it's own strengths and weaknesses. Dwarves are lords of the forge and make powerful weapons, armor and even constructs. Elves are lovers of nature and nature itself serves to protect them. Each has their own feel, their own flavor.
Undead as a Playable Race: We wanted to offer a truly unique feel for undead in Worlds of Magic. Not just humans dressed up like zombies. The undead pay no taxes, eat no food, don't want to get a villa down by the beach. They have one goal: The extermination of all life. Choosing to play as Undead is going to alter the entire game play experience. We want it to be something with a truly unique feel.
Tactical Combat: Battles in Worlds of Magic take place on a tactical combat map. Trained units, summoned creatures and hired allies will all join the ranks of your armies. You will be able to support your units with powerful spells. Summon more creatures to the battlefield or blast your enemies with a devastating fireball.
Arena Mode: Want to hone your tactical combat skills without playing a full game? Good news! That's exactly what arena mode allows you to do. Build an army right on the battle map. You can play with and fight against any unit in the game. Test unit abilities, try out new strategies, or just prove to your buddies what a brilliant tactician you are!
D20 Combat Mechanics: Thoroughly play tested, balanced, and offering in-depth mechanics the D20 OGL rule set makes a perfect base for turn-based tactical combat. Worlds of Magic makes use of the rule set to offer units that are unique and flavorful while at the same time ensuring that none are under or over powered.
Units gain experience: All military units in Worlds of Magic gain experience. As they do so they gain levels and become more and more powerful. Even the lowliest of units can become an effective fighting force given time and patience.
Over 80 different military units: Each faction offers a number of trainable military units. In addition the world is filled with wandering monsters and powerful guardians. Face them in battle or try to convince them to join you cause.
Hire heroes and champions to lead your armies: Worlds of Magic offers a large number of hand crafted heroes and champions for you to recruit as well as randomly generated ones that can rarely be promoted from normal military units. They can gain more experience than other units and can be equipped with a number of magical artifacts. Use them to lead you armies or join them together into an elite corps.
Procedurally Generated Terrain: Every game of Worlds of Magic can be unique. The entire game universe is generated procedurally and can be altered with a number of settings, be given a completely random key or generated based on a key entered manually. You can experience completely new worlds each game, share keys with your friends or enjoy the same game world each time. It's up to you.
Huge Maps: Want to spend days conquering the universe?
Worlds of Magic can let you do that. Create games with hundreds of thousands of
accessible world tiles. Build hundreds of cities and explore
thousands of world features, such as forgotten dungeons and lost
cities. Just how big a universe do you want to overthrow?
7 planes of existence to explore and conquer: Explore the Prime Material Plane (a world much like our own) and discover magic portals to the elemental planes of existence. Dive into the Shadow Plane and face the undead legion or head to the Radiant Plane and build a paradise. Expand you empire into the realms of Air, Earth, Fire and Water. Don't just conquer the world, conquer the planes!
Worlds of Magic will first be release for Windows. We then plan to release it on Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. The more we raise here the more quickly we will be able to make this happen. Other platforms may be added dependent on the stretch goals we reach.
There is no doubt that the idea of Kicking It Forward is next great thing for independent developers, just after the Kickstarter itself.
So we are Kicking!
No, not yet. Many games have tried to follow in the footsteps of Master of Magic. We feel that none of them have quite reached that mark. Our primary goal for Worlds of Magic is to capture the essence of what made Master of Magic the classic it is. In our feature list you will see a number of familiar, genre-defining elements.
You will also see things that break new ground or build on top of the genre's existing foundation. We hope to make Worlds of Magic something unique but familiar. Something with new mechanics and exciting features that, at the same time, reminds gamers of the good old days.
Wastelands Interactive is an independent game developer located in Poland. Since its inception in 2006 its focus has been the production of strategic and tactical war games that combine depth of play with accessibility. Over the past few years its titles have enjoyed increasing popularity within the Wargamers community.
For over 15 years strategy games have been a passion of the team. Each of the titles produced by the company has been developed by a team of gifted individuals, experts in their particular fields. Many have rich backgrounds in various modding communities and are people devoted both to gaming and to the history behind it. Due to its roots Wastelands Interactive puts a great deal of emphasis on communication with and collaboration from the gaming community.
George Edward Purdy has accepted the position of Creative Director for Worlds of Magic. George is known for his fantastic character work on both Master of Magic and Master of Orion. He is responsible for the portrayal of the faction leaders, champions, and heroes, as well as overseeing the entire artistic vision of the project. In addition he will help insure that Worlds of Magic truly follows in the footsteps of Master of Magic!
Our base goal for this kickstarter certainly wouldn't be enough to make the game if it was all we had. However, what we hope to raise here is only part of our budget. It's the £30k standing between us and the game as we envision it. Not only have we already invested money in Worlds of Magic, we've invested a great deal of time and effort. This is because we truly believe in the vision. The £30k we hope to raise will bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be.
What happens if you exceed your base funding level?
We have a number of additional things we'd like to do with the game. Obviously, the more funding we get the more we can include in the base package. We'll talk more about specific goals as we near them, but the stretch goals include: Additional races and spells, multiple-platform support (iPad, Linux, etc.), secondary features (like a loot editor) and other things we would love to put in if we had the extra funding. The base goal is really just the beginning. It's the minimum we need to make the core game. The more funding we have at the beginning the more feature-rich we can make Worlds of Magic at release.
We believe in crowd-funding! We're a group of independent developers working to produce something that fans are really going to enjoy. We're not a large company trying to bang out a game in a set amount of time to sell to a set number of people. Worlds of Magic isn't going to be homogenized entertainment thrown together to get as many people as possible to buy it (whether or not they like it after the point of sale).
Worlds of Magic is being made by people that love the 4X Fantasy genre. We want other fans to help us make it happen. Funding is certainly nice, but it's not all we want from the community. We have an active forums where we discuss the decisions that are shaping the game. This isn't an opportunity for you to do some charity work, it's an opportunity for you to help give birth to a new and exciting game. A true successor to Master of Magic's throne!
One of the most obvious ways to help make Worlds of Magic a reality is to back us as generously as you can. Also, of course, you can tell everyone you know about what we're trying to do here. Spread the word through whatever social channels you have. Share the link to this kickstarter with all your friends. Send an e-mail out to all your MoM and 4X loving buddies.
Another thing you can do to really help this effort is become part of the Worlds of Magic community. This game isn't just being community funded, it's being community developed. By becoming part of that community you will be helping shape the game into something wonderful. So, please, take a moment and register for our forums. You can truly help make Worlds of Magic happen.
First off, you get to be part of something special, part of something big. You get to be part of Worlds of Magic. You get the knowledge that you helped make it happen. Of course, there are more tangible rewards as well. You'll get your name in the credits positioned according to your backer level. So, you'll be able to tell your friends “Yep, I was part of that. See my name!” There are also a number of other rewards as you can see from our rewards list. We've worked hard to offer things gamers will really like. Get a physical copy of the game to put on a shelf or a t-shirt to show your friends just how cool you really are. All things considered, the answer to the question “What do I get out of it?” is “A lot.”
To purchase add ons simply add the cost of the add ons you want to the cost of the pledge tier you want and pledge the total amount. For instance, if you want the Spearman tier (12£ ) and the Additional Hero Pack (5£) simply pledge 17£. After the KS campaign has ended each backer will receive an e-mail survey asking what add ons they selected with thier pledge. You can change your mind about add ons before you fill out the survey. So, if you had added 10£ for and extra copy, but then changed your mind and decided you want the Additional Hero Pack and Digital Creatures Roster (both 5£) that will be fine with us. If you have already pledged and want to change your pledge simply click the “Manage Pledge” button at the top right of the KS page.

Additional Hero Pack: Add 5 KS exclusive* random heroes to your game.
Digital Creatures Roster: A digital list of creatures and units with their image and stats. (The game comes with information on all the creatures and units in the game. This addon is for a more attractive, artistic version.)
Elven Winged Hussar: Add a KS exclusive* elvish cavalry unit. They may show up as a “wandering monster” or mercenary band for hire depending on the circumstances.
Long Tongue the Bard: This is a special DLC hero that you can only get by spreading the word about Worlds of Magic. So, how do you do that? Post about us somewhere on the Internet where people can see and then send us a message with a link for us to go take a look. (If you post on facebook you have to get a least one share to qualify.) So, go post about us somewhere. On forums, or facebook, or whatever. You spread the word you get the bard. It's just that simple :)
*KS Exclusives: The KS exclusive items have cosmetic differences that will identify them as Backer Rewards. They are for the collection of “cool points” and have no exclusive in-game bonus. The Exclusive faction leader will have a unique portrait. They will be a full blown faction leader and can be used by the player or AI. Non-KS versions of the faction leader could be made at the start of a new game by creating a “Custom Leader”, but they will not have the unique KS exclusive portrait. Again, these rewards are to give backers “cool points” not hand out game breaking advantages.
The physical rewards are fairly self explanatory. Be sure to add £6 to ship outside the UK.

Risks and challenges
Time. One of the greatest challenges we have to face is getting all the features we want in Worlds of Magic by our target date. Needless to say, as we hit more and more stretch goals there will be more and more artwork to be completed before the game's final release. Now, that will be offset to some extent by the fact that we will be able to hire more artists. However, we have to make sure that any newcomers share the same artistic vision for the game as our current team. Although none of this should delay our Beta version, which we plan to have ready by 4Q 2013, it may delay the final release of the game simply because of the additional workload. We will certainly do our best to hit our deadlines, but in our minds quality is more important that a set in stone release date. We feel that, even if there should be a slight delay, the wait will be worth it.
