MARNAUT: For the Explorer
Like the dive-watch pioneers of the mid 20th century the Dark Surge 300m will endure as the ocean explorer for today's timepiece market
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, September 26 2018 1:30 PM UTC +00:00.
Designed in Croatia and engineered to explore the world’s uncharted places, Marnaut timepieces mark a return to the enduring style and quality of the great dive watches of the past.
Established in 2018 by career-creative and life-long horology enthusiast Mario Jutronic, Marnaut is an independent watch brand that prides itself on making high-performance, modern ocean timepieces inspired by mid-20th century design.

Pride in craft
Marnaut is about creating stylish and enduring limited-batch dive watches. Our timepieces work at depths of 300m and have the high-grade materials and craftsmanship to match. All our watches are engineered to meet higher specifications than most others and house one of the best automatic movements around, the Miyota 9015.
Original yet classic
New watch brands are constantly surfacing, but Marnaut is not like the rest. We go beyond the simplicity and wearability of the others to bring a high-performance, modern-day classic to the dive-watch segment. We have gone to great lengths to source the best components and develop a one-of-a-kind timepiece that stands confidently alongside luxury brands, which cost far more.
300 Pieces per year
Marnaut is a small, independent watch brand that prides itself on creating a unique product. As a result, production of the Dark Surge 300m is capped at:
- MDS300T (Two-tone Black Bezel) 300pcs per year
- MDS300S (Silver Bezel) 300pcs per year
- MDS300B (Full Black IP Plated) 300pcs per year
Capping supply means Marnaut timepieces hold their value and our customers have pride in ownership.
Our two-factor verification proves you are buying a watch that has a limited yearly supply. Each Marnaut Dark Surge 300m has a serial production number etched on the back of the case and a unique QR code is provided for verification via mobile app.
Scanning the QR code using the app CertiEye (on android or ios) will produce a serial number that matches the one stamped on the case. The app will not scan a copy of the authentication card, only the original will work. Any watch without the two-step verification or these matching serial numbers is not Marnaut.
Here’s how our two-step verification works (video here):
They say the dial makes the watch. It is within Marnaut’s 34mm face where the heart and soul of our timepieces exist.
The design of our one-of-a-kind enamel finished dial was guided by the texture and symmetry of the extraordinary and enduring sea urchin shell. There are more than 900 species of sea urchin spread across the length and breadth of the world’s oceans. One of longest living creatures on Earth, they inhabit and endure the darkest, most inhospitable and extreme corners of the ocean.
Marnaut dials house 46 metal indexes, including circular, numbered and line markers. Each is carefully pinned through the dial and secured only millimetres apart, making the production process extremely complex. Such detail requires exact precision and skill, and if any element is just a fraction of a millimetre off, the entire dial is rendered useless.
Marnaut uses Super-LumiNova C3, the world's best lume from Switzerland. It is applied to all 46 metal indexes, the hands, as well as the bezel for the 300T and 300B, (C3 Super-LumiNova is not applied on the 300S bezel). The unique dial together with the Super-LumiNova makes them glow in captivating symmetry like no other watch on the market.
Case and crystal
The Marnaut Dark Surge 300m is fitted with a scratch-proof domed shaped sapphire crystal and custom brushed case, which is designed to sit perfectly on the wrist. The gasket fitted screw-down back cover and double O-ring screw-down crown ensures water resistance to depths of 300 meters.
All Marnaut Dark Surge 300m watches are fitted with 120-click unidirectional rotating bezels and are made of anodized aluminium.
We have three variations:
- MDS300S - Silver anodized aluminium (no Super-LumiNova C3 applied on bezel)
- MDS300T - Black anodized aluminium
- MDS300B - Black anodized aluminium
Under the hood
The Marnaut Dark Surge 300m is powered by the industry leading automatic Miyota 9015 movement. The 24-jewel movement beats at 28,800bph, giving it a super smooth hand sweep. It has a 42-hour plus power reserve, hand winding and hacking.
- MDS300S - 1x silicone, 1x cream distressed Italian leather
- MDS300T - 1x silicone, 1x grey distressed Italian leather
- MDS300B - 1x silicone, 1x black distressed Italian leather Testing

Marnaut watches are tested to 30ATM (300 metres) in a water pressure chamber. Watch how it performed (video):
PURCHASING MULTIPLE WATCHES
While we would like to accommodate all requests the most logical way for us to set up the Kickstarter rewards was to do 3 rewards - 300pcs per style, as is above. This means you can only purchase one style of the Dark Surge 300 per Kickstarter account. If you would like to purchase additional watches our best guess would be to do it with a friend on another account. We are sorry if this causes inconvenience but it was the cleanest way for us to offer a limited run of watches.
A BIT ABOUT ME & THE PROJECT
MARNAUT = Mare(sea) + Nautica.
Having collected vintage watches (mainly divers) for the last 7 years, it’s needless to say that I have the watch bug. I love the stories, the designs, the ruggedness of tool watches and the fact that you can dress them up as well.
Throughout these 7 years, I’ve seen thousands of interesting, intriguing, and unique vintage diver watches and inevitably built a mental database of these beautiful designs.
As a career creative, I approached this project largely from a design standpoint wanting to challenge myself to create something that was not a homage piece but rather a timepiece that had the same feel as the legends of the past but could stand on its own as an original. That meant that I had to create a distinctive dial, which for me is the most vital part of the watch.
Being Croatian, I spent much of my childhood snorkeling on the Island of Brac in the Adriatic Sea looking for sea urchins and their shells. I remember always being captivated by their shape, their symmetry and their utter uniqueness. That texture and balance all came back to me and ultimately became the design inspiration for the MARNAUT Dark Surge 300M.
I hope people see it for its originality and are proud to add it to their collection.
To see more pictures of the Dark Surge 300M in action and on the wrist head over to our instagram and be sure to follow to keep up to date with the latest.
Your support is sincerely appreciated and would give us the needed boost to keep this endeavour moving forward. It would also enable us to develop future pieces like a chronostop/chronograph version.
Risks and challenges
The watch industry is more specialised and fragmented than ever – meaning while the hands might be made in one factory, the dial could be manufactured on the other side of the world.
The challenge is ensuring each component not only fits together, but also creates a superior product when combined. This takes time and patience, particularly when immense underwater pressure is added to the equation.
Although the initial groundwork of sourcing and organising top-quality components was a challenge, Marnaut has reached production stage through tireless testing and sampling, and is ready to hit the market.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
