Our new big vision

New Village Press is a rising, public-benefit publisher based in sunny Oakland, California. Our books celebrate the beauty, vitality and creativity of community builders who turn crisis into opportunity. To a world eager for hope, we bring abundant good news.

We love the feel of freshly printed books, the excitement of giant pallets arriving with our “babies”. . . AND we're also eager to join the digital era. We know our books can reach the broadest audience possible (especially young readers and readers in other countries) when we also offer them as e-books. This means converting each title's print files to flowable e-pubs for the growing number and kind of electronic reading devices. So, first thing we will do with your generous contribution is digitize selected titles from our catalog (hint: see what’s italicized below). Most of our books are chock-full of photographs and illustrations, so this process will require a lot of tender loving care, technical knowledge, and time (read: money). We've signed initial agreements with our distributor, and we're ready to go . . . as soon as we raise the necessary funds.

Our mission

New Village is Awakening Creativity in our neighborhoods and schools, and Undoing the Silence about social and economic injustice. Our authors (scholars, artists, activists, and educators) explore the effectiveness of Arts for Change, and the connections between Art and Upheaval. We ask What We See when we look at our streets and cities, and offer practical advice on how to make our surroundings more just, green, and vibrant—by moving from Asphalt to Ecosystems in our kids’ school grounds, for example. We offer both a Beginner’s Guide to Community-Based Arts, and inspirational readings for those who know the challenges of our living together By Heart. In short, our new village is a New Creative Community that is not afraid to confront what pulls us apart—our American Tensions—and to build upon what holds us together. Acting Together, we can bring about the change we want to see.

Oh, and we’re not just about books—New Village partners with professional and grassroots organizations to help create great initiatives like the annual Jane’s Walks (self-organized discovery walks in neighborhoods all around the world) or the upcoming international Green Schoolyard Conference or the 2010 Toward a Just Metropolis Conference. We are passionate about what we do and live to make a difference.

What really turns us on

Ten-thousand dollars is our initial go-digital kickstart. What we are extra excited about is a double kick. When you help us reach 200% of our campaign goal ($20,000), you’ll make our wildest dream come true—we will turn our forthcoming Acting Together series into a radically fabulous app for the iPad! This two-volume book documents theatrical performances that are healing violence in parts of the world beset by conflict and trauma, and the stunning performances described by the authors have been documented in a feature-length film. The app we envision will embed selections of that rich material, making videos, sound, and interviews with the featured artists part of the reading experience. We have everything we need to turn this project into a groundbreaking example (for indie publishers) of how to infuse a nonfiction book with life. Will you help us get our digital groove on?

It takes a village...

Being an independent, nonprofit publisher during an economic downturn takes daring, and it takes grassroots support from our community—that’s you! We have gutsy projects and big dreams, and, with twenty titles under our belt, have already proven we can make real what we imagine. If you value high-quality books by and about courageous creatives, please support our Kickstarter campaign!

Your pledge is tax-deductible

By donating to New Village Press you are supporting independent and socially-engaged publishing and are letting us know our work is relevant to you. For that we are immensely grateful!

Now, take a look to the right at the yummy rewards we offer as thanks for your pledge. Keep in mind, we must meet the minimum $10,000 goal to receive your money and to gift our reward.
