About

My name is Heather and I'm launching this campaign to help out my daughter.  Here is her story in her own words:

ABOUT CAELYN

"I'm Caelyn (age 13) and the sole proprietor of Caelyn's Creations. I started my business a few months ago to help pay for my hockey after my Mom became sick with Sjorgrens and had to stop working. I believe if you want something...you work hard for it! My business offers unique arts and crafts servicing the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia and beyond. While I love creating with various mediums, my favourite thing to do is pyrography.

My business started by making what I call "Smokeheads".  Smokeheads are a wooden bonfire accessory that burn from the inside-out and create an experience for you to enjoy outdoors.

Over the past few months, my designs have become elaborate and people starting asking for smaller versions that they can keep without burning (keepsakes).

So, I started making tealight holders.  I also make a variety of other products such as key chains.

My most popular tea light is the one I made for Sidney Crosby.  It was a gift for the player I respect because of all the injuries he's had to overcome in his career.

However, as you might imagine, woodworking and pyrography tools are very expensive.  My startup costs were just under $6000.00 (full financials available upon request). I have invested everything back into my business to date because this is a business that I will continue to own and operate throughout my school years (and perhaps beyond).  Because there is nobody doing what I do, I've had to do a lot of experimenting.  Some plans have failed, but I learned A LOT.  And now I know what I need to do to be successful.  This business will push forward, but I will be able to support my original goals faster with your support.

SUCCESS TO DATE

My business has been VERY successful! Although I've only been in operation for a few months (and I'm 13), I've already been celebrated as a finalist in the Minister's Entrepreneurship Award of Excellence in Halifax, NS.

I sell everything I make within minutes (4-6 mins.) of it being completed and advertised.  With your support, I'll be able to hire more employees to help build smokeheads.

I am honoured to have also been asked to present at a 3 day Sustainability Conference a few months ago where I presented my business and talked about sustainability in business to the Nova Scotia Community College.

My "ASK":  I am seeking to branch out into a new area for Caelyn's Creations.  Introducing,  "K's Nautical Series:  Celebrating Nova Scotia's Shipbuilding Industry, Past & Present".

I have secured the copyright and permission to use 16 Historical Ship images from Mahone Bay, NS and also the use of the Bluenose II image.  I can also gain access to leftover wood from the reconstruction of the Bluenose II (pictured on the Canadian dime).  My plan is to make tealight holders with the image of the Bluenose II and the 16 ships from The Mahone Bay Silhouette Series. In the past I've used wood from the local strawberry box-making industry (poplar wood).  Unfortunately, for this new project, poplar wood will not work as it splits too easily (even after I paid to kiln dry it).

After much research and experimenting, I need to purchase basswood for this series of artwork.  In addition, I need to purchase some different tools such as a palm sander, router, and wood brander.   Then, I'm going to inlay wood for the masts on these designs that is leftover from the Bluenose II!  On the base of the lights, I'm going to brand my store name "Caelyn's Creations" and each piece will have a serial number.  The pieces of art will then be sold with a write-up about the ship's history. Funding for this project will secure monies for the brander, wood, specialized tools, and allow me to expand operations.

Below, are the 16 images that I've gained permission to use in this special project (should I have a successful Kickstart):

Prototype of Nautical Series:

Prototype Only. Note that the masts are inlaid with wood leftover from the reconstruction of Bluenose II. The name of the ship is also burned on the back of the tea light holder. Final piece will stand 7" high x 4" wide and be made basswood.

REWARD DETAILS: I have an extensive website created for my business (http://www.caelynscreations.ca). Thousands of people visit this site every month. I have created a 3-tier reward system for this project to thank you for your support. Should you donate ANY amount, you will be recognized on my website on the page "Members of the Board". This will be a spot on my website to publicly thank all of those who have given me a helping hand. The 3 tiers are as follows:

$1-$99 donation: your name will be added on my website to the Members of the Board and I'll send a thank-you card.

$100-$249 donation: I will name one of my Smokeheads after you (e.g. "Stella"). You will then be able to check a map and see a picture of your honorary creation and see where it was purchased.  As well, I will send you a thank-you card from my business.

$250 + : I will send you your own wooden keychain with the Bluenose II image burned on it, anywhere in North America along with a thank-you card.

Additional Things I "WOOD" like you to know about why you should support my business:

• I help my community environmentally: for the most part, I get my wood from fallen trees or from the local strawberry box making industry. If I didn't use the "waste" from the strawberry box making, that wood goes into a big burn pile or are buried. My tealight holders are especially helpful with this. I also recycle things like rope and hockey skate laces that I use for smokehead handles.

• socially, my smokeheads bring friends & family together. They are great for ANY occasion such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations, holidays, and for that person you want to give a gift to that has EVERYTHING and doesn't want any more stuff.

• My creations keep history alive. I burn different images such as The Halifax Explosion and Canada 150 into my artwork. • I provide business opportunities by creating jobs for other people. I am very proud to employ people with exceptionalities too.

Proud Supporter of Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre (Plank Industries) in Waterville, NS. I've now hired this facility to help me prepare my wood (sanding, drilling holes) so I can spend more time on my art.

• I am constantly giving back to my community. I make donations to causes and also make creations that people auction off to raise money for their causes. In the few short months I've been in business, I've supported over 12 initiatives.

Risks and challenges

Caelyn may be young, but she is determined!
It's been challenging because there is NO funding for youth at her age. That hasn't stopped her though. She has learned a lot in the few short months of her operations and now that the "bugs are worked out" (things such as wood supply, kiln times), she's ready to take her business to the next level.
Caelyn is certainly not just a business. She is an entrepreneur who is able to adjust her business plan to meet the requests of her customers.
Thanks for your support!
