Starting my own line of RPG minis focused on minis for hard to find races or based on user requests. The first line of 3 minis was designed around the goliath race and offers several different choices.. First the classic barbarian, next the ranger/archer and finally a multi-class mini good for monks, thieves, bards or fighters.
Whats different?? These minis are sized to represent goliaths, larger than standard minis but still comparable in size. I am a Reaper mini fan (and live local to Reaper HQ) but when I play a goliath barbarian, I want a mini that is larger than standard size to represent the race. These minis are also easily used for half orcs and stand approximately half a head to a full head taller than other 28mm minis. The Barbarian stands tallest and is shown here along with Reapers Goldar (a personal favorite) for size comparison only.
The initial lineup was designed with a classic feel, less glamour and more old school basic adventurer looks suitable for initial session game play. I mean not everyone starts with plate mail.
I started with a very specific goal in mind; I wanted Sandra Garrity to be my sculptor and am very pleased to say she accepted and did a fantastic job designing all three. I love her style and I gave her freedom for artist interpretation based on my design ideas and she delivered. I then partnered with Queen Penguin Productions to perform the actual casting of minis. Shannon at QPP has also been great to work with and delivered phase one of my initial run today (June 6th).
So why put it on kickstarter? all the classic reasons; a great venue of backers, a lot of game followers, a history of backers for minis and great industry exposure. It's not just about the funds raised and more about building the community. I paid for the sculpting and casting already and have minis in hand ready to ship so there is no hardship or fear of failure. Funds raised will go directly to casting more minis based on actual demand and to fund the next minis already under design, once its time for sculpting.
More designs will follow and user input is welcome to guide future designs.
Risks and challenges
Biggest risk - overwhelming success. But seriously with initial stages (design, sculpts and casting) complete and first run ready to ship, there are no real challenges anticipated. Funds raised will assist with additional new designs, the campaign could always fall short of funds needed for new designs; however, if that happens I will boot strap the next line just like I did the first.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
