About

12th December - New Reward options added: Stereo MegaFilter, see below

In the late 70s Derek Dearden ran Survival Projects - a bespoke design service based in the Yes equipment warehouse in West London. He designed and built sound processing units for major rock performers, including Yes, ELP, Queen. AC/DC and Mike Oldfield. He also supplied recording studios in London, Paris, New York, Montreal and Los Angeles, several leading independent sound engineers and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Now he returns to his roots with the MegaFilter - the first in a projected range of top-quality effects units.

Developed in collaboration with multi-Platinum record producer Paul Northfield (Rush, Asia, Dream Theatre, Queenryche, Alice Cooper, etc etc), the MegaFilter provides an unprecedented range of exquisite tonal effects and modulations, from a 100% Analog device.

Update on 12th December: I've now added an option to get the stereo version (which will have a list price of £695) in February.

  • Separate Filter Mode selection on each channel
  • Use the two channels, for Left and Right, or for two different instruments or tracks …or feed the same input to both –
  • Left input feeds to both if Right input is uplugged
  • Offset Second Channel controls up or down
  • Sync or reverse modulation of second channel from Pedal, Envelope, or LFO
  • Two CV inputs and four CV outputs to interface with modular synths

What sets the MegaFilter apart from existing Resonant Filter type effects?

Three factors:

  • The range of the Multi-dimensional control options.
  • The sonic characteristics of the unique core Filter circuit design.
  • The sheer quality of the audio signal chain.

Let's look at each of those in turn:

Multi-dimensional control

A standard Expression Pedal allows real-time control of four different aspects of the signal processing:

1) Pedal sweep of Filter Frequency

 2) Pedal sweep of Resonance

 Dynamic sweep of Resonance:

As well as pedal sweep of the Frequency, there are two Auto-Sweep modes:

Dynamic sweep, driven by the Envelope (loudness) of the signal, with variable decay rate, Oscillating sweep, driven by a versatile Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO)

Both Dynamic and Oscillating sweeping can be applied to the Resonance as well as to the Filter Frequency.

The Oscillator has a wide range of speed adjustment (from around 4 seconds per cycle up into the audio band), a choice of triangle, square or sine wave shapes, and variable symmetry.

3) Pedal control of Dry/Wet mix

4) Pedal control of LFO Speed

The Pedal can control any one of these, or any two or three of them, or all four - in any chosen proportion. For each of these parameters, the base - pedal back - setting can be chosen, and also the range of pedal operation - as demonstrated in the video above.

Any other external source of 0-8V control voltage could be used (eg an analog synthesiser).

Both Dynamic and Oscillating sweeping can be applied to the Resonance as well as to the Filter Frequency.

As well as the familiar Band Pass Filter mode (as in Wah pedals, and auto-Wah devices), you can switch to High Pass, Low Pass, and Notch Filter modes.

Sonic Characteristics of the Filter

Although the principles of audio filtering have been well established over many years, this circuit configuration is a completely original design. Many musicians and engineers have attested to the startling subtlety of the result.

Audio Signal Quality

With many years experience of designing equipment for recording studios, I have brought the same standards of execution to the design of this device. This means that it has far higher technical specifications than most footpedals or stomp boxes.

For those who like numbers, we have a Total Distortion of 0.06% (almost all second harmonic), and a Dynamic Range of over 106dB.

What this means in plain language is that it has an unparalleled clarity and transparency. This has been confirmed in numerous subjective tests by discerning listeners.

Accessories

The unit requires a standard 9V DC power supply, and an expression pedal. These are not included, as many purchasers will already own these items, or have their own preferences regarding the models they prefer. A passive volume pedal can also be used, connected by a Y lead (stereo jack to two mono jacks).

Plans for fulfilment

The design has been evolving since the first prototype was built in October 2017, and been through three subsequent iterations, culminating in the current surface-mount production version. Some early models have been in regular use for almost a year now, with no reliability issues, and users have been consistently delighted with the performance.

We have 40 assembled circuit boards in stock which will give us a head start in fulfilling the rewards. These were assembled by our subcontractors in China, who have consistently proved themselves to be reliable and responsive. This has also served to verify the accuracy and the completeness of the manufacturing files produced from our design suite. Should the demand exceed that which can be serviced from this stock, they are primed to fabricate more batches at short notice.

The funds from the campaign are primarily required to get the metalwork and final assembly completed in cost-effective batches.

Risks and challenges

Since we have working prototypes, we are satisfied that the overall design concept is sound. I (Derek) have over 35 years experience of delivering novel high-tech projects on time and on budget, not only in the fields of sound and lighting as described above, but also in diverse areas including point-of-sale, toll collection systems and laboratory apparatus.
The production version of the unit has been finalised, and sample units built by our proposed manufacturer have been tested and found to perform as well or better than earlier prototypes.
Some early units have been in continual use for over eleven months, and proved completely reliable.
There is a remote possibility that component shortages could introduce delays, although we have minimised this by selecting as far as possible standard components available from several different suppliers.
