We are so excited to share with you that not only did we make our sneak peek challenge on Friday, but have reached our preliminary funding goal, all in one day! Thank you so much for your contributions!  We would still appreciate your support to make this film as beautiful as possible - any funds raised between now and the closing date for our campaign will be put towards significant post-production expenses including colour-grading, studio hire for soundtrack recording, festival fees and distribution expenses. Thank you!

The Story:

Portrait is a period short film inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Oval Portrait and artist, poet and pre-Raphaelite model Elizabeth Siddal. The film explores a moment in the life of Sybil, a young emerging artist who finds her passion for her lover at odds with her passion for her work. This tension between her art and her lover - who is also an artist and for whom she is the ultimate muse - has tragic consequences for all. Portrait seeks to celebrate the talent and intelligence of female artists in the 19th and 20th centuries, who struggled for recognition in the male-dominated art world.

In writing the film, writer/director Melissa-Kelly Franklin was inspired by women who found themselves embroiled in a creative melting pot - women like Lizzie Siddal, Annie Miller and Florence Carter-Wood. These women became almost as mythical as the heroines and idealised women they portrayed in paintings, becoming recognized more for their faces and bodies rather than their individuality and creativity. This film seeks to peer behind the surface of the portrait, to see something more of the woman behind the face captured on the canvas.

What your money will support:

This is a passion project for all of the members of the cast and crew, who are donating their time and effort to make this film.  We have worked hard to cover some expenses through sponsorship, but now we need your help with the following crucial elements of production for when we shoot the film in early August, otherwise Portrait can't be made.  With your support we can make this film a reality!

This is a joint production between the UK and Australia, being filmed on location in the UK, so all expenses are in both currencies. Our total goal is £3000 GBP, the equivalent of $5418.16 AUD

This is a breakdown of how your donation will be used to fund Portrait:

Equipment 2000 GBP / 3612.10 AUD - This film will thrive off its atmosphere, created by lighting, sound and cinematography, which is why a significant equipment budget is crucial.  The budget needs to cover equipment over each of our filming departments, from the hiring costs of the camera and kit, to lighting and sound equipment.

Costumes 600 GBP / 1083.63 AUD - With this film being a period piece, we want absolutely authentic, detailed custom-fitted costumes that reflect the individual personalities of our characters.  We will be hiring our costumes from Cosprop, professional suppliers to award-winning British television period dramas.

Other 400 GBP / 722.42 AUD - This will help cover some of our post-production expenses including colour-grading, soundtrack recording, festival distribution and additional production costs including transport, catering and location expenses.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge 'Portrait' faces is raising enough funds within a very tight production time-frame. With cast and crew from all over the world, we have a limited window in which to shoot. With your support, we can keep the wheels turning towards our shooting date in early August, and create a film that brings this complex story of the conflict between a young artist's two great loves, to life.
