Give a voice to the Nuban people and bring light to the war Sudan is waging against it's own people. Support Eyes and Ears Nuba. Read more
This project was successfully funded on April 15, 2012.
About this project
Since last June bombs have been raining down on the Nuba mountains of southern Sudan as President Al-Bashir, an ICC war criminal, wages yet another war against his own people. Cut off from the rest of the world, many Nuban families have fled -- living in caves and unable to plant their crops. With no aid groups allowed to operate in the region, famine is looming and the situation is increasingly critical.
Eyes and Ears Nuba is a Nuban civilian reporting team dedicated to providing the international community and the population of Sudan with a reliable and credible source of information on the war in Southern Kordofan. Our goal is to shine a light on the facts and reality of this isolated conflict.
We are launching an urgent fundraiser to create an innovative and powerful multimedia website to bring our first hand reports to the world and activists in Sudan seeking democratic change.
What to do
We need your help to create a state-of-the-art online media center that will allow us to bring our reporting to the entire world including the Sudanese people.
The website will serve as a vital portal for getting unbiased, reliable information out of the Nuba mountains while also connecting local reporters with a broader audience. We believe the Nuban people can speak for themselves.
Our team has received training and some supplies to continue this critical work, but now we need a way to broadcast what we are seeing and documenting to the world.
Your support will allow us to build the site, train the reporters, buy important reporting equipment, and hire editors to help us create compelling frontline video and text dispatches in both Arabic and English through the end of the year and beyond.
Please help us give voice to the Nuban's struggle, and be part of making the world a more just and democratic place.
All funds in addition to our goal, will be used to continue this initiative until there is peace in Sudan.
From 1981 to 2005 the people of Southern Sudan fought a war with their government, their stated goal was to create a democratic and inclusive government in Khartoum. In 2005 a peace agreement was signed which lead to the separation of North and South Sudan The people of the Nuba mountains fought on the side of the south for independence, but when the borders were withdrawn they found themselves living under an increasingly hostile government in which they had no representation.
In June 2011 the north Sudan government launched an ethnic cleansing campaign that include door to door assignations, direct attacks against the Nuban leaders and army, and a ruthless random bombing campaign of silvans that continues to this day.
The Nuban army called the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North decided to fight back in order to protect its people and achieve representation in the Sudan government.
Southern Kordofan is an extremely difficult region to access and it is very remote. Few media have the ability to report on the situation that is getting worse by the day. Since June the government of Sudan has been pushing into the Nuba Mountains. We have documented numerous cases of the Sudan army targeting civilian, burning villages, raping women and engaging in indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas. The UN has called the tactics crimes against humanity. As a result thousands of people have fled to South
Sudan as refugees and more than 250,000 people are displaced and have been forced to leave in caves. The government has refused to allows Aid groups to operate in the region, and famine is quickly becoming a reality, as the bombings have kept many families from planting crops.
The story of the Nuba people struggle must be told in order to give international governments the pressure to act against the Sudanese government, and to spread awareness in Sudan about the atrocities their government is committing against it's own people.
What has been established
When the fighting started, all international organizations evacuated the region. Ryan Boyette, an American development worker who has lived in the Nuba mountains for nearly a decade resigned from his position worked with local reporters to create a mobile Nuba media team.
The team was originally made up of 14 Nubans that had the same passion as him to shed light on the Southern Kordofan situation. The team spread across the region taking photos, videos and interviews of documenting the conflict and the people that were affected. We reached out to International media as well Sudanese activists to pass on our updates of the ever changing situation. Our videos and pictures were used in BBC, AlJazeera, CNN, FOX and other news agencies.
Please contact us if you have any questions. We are also looking for video and text editors as well as social mobilizers to help us in the future.
