Best. Quote. Ever.
"Idea I wish I'd thought of: Two-Headed Cop. Good Cop Bad Cop on the same body. How did I miss that?"
- Glen Mazzara, Executive Producer and Showrunner for AMC's "THE WALKING DEAD" writing in The Hollywood Reporter
Two-Headed Cop is an independently financed, computer animated film currently in production. It was originally a pitch for an animated TV series, but then we decided to fund and create it ourselves. We took the script from the pilot of the series and put that into production. Ultimately it will be around 30 minutes in length.
Two-Headed Cop follows the gritty story of Ray and Ray as they battle crime and occasionally each other to upend Fat City’s criminal element. Framed for an assault on Happy Fat Guy, the town’s most beloved entertainer, Two-Headed Cop becomes a fugitive from the law.
To clear their name, they must descend into the seedy underbelly of Fat City -- a journey into the dark, tilted world of carnies, goons, grifters, pet markets, fine haberdashery… and a mysterious figure from out of their past.
There’s a lot of tough talk, cheap thrills, and hard take-downs. There’s a cop pushed to the edge, a mad-man out for revenge, and more grifters and goons than you can shake a stick at.
Our film is inspired by the styles and palettes of ‘40s-era animation, as well as the dark sophistication of film noir. Thematically, it’s hard-boiled pulp fiction, taking its cues from classic noirs like Touch of Evil, Raw Deal, and Out of the Past, as well as the crime fiction of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane.
However, it isn’t simply an animated homage to ‘40s cinema, because it’s not our world, but rather an off-kilter version of it.
It’s a world where a dog might talk like a man, a man might walk like an ape, and a dancing naked fat guy is the hottest show in town. A world with no sense of scale, where a cop as small as a lunchbox chases a crook as big as a lunch truck. Where the biggest thug in town walks through walls like they were made of paper.
A world where there is no “normal”, but the closest you can get to it is Two-Headed Cop.
Most short films have 2-3 characters, in 1 location and are 3-8 minutes long. Two-Headed Cop has over 30+ characters across 14 locations and is 30 minutes in length. It's a real chunk of work, with high production value.
Currently Two-Headed Cop has entered the animation stage of production. The one-minute JAIL sequence you saw in the video is the first footage out of the gate.
The Kickstarter Goal is to raise $150,000. This will directly fund the ANIMATION PRODUCTION. The world of Two-Headed Cop is lush, and full of characters that are an animator's dream. It needs rich, sophisticated quality animation to do that world justice. And the Rays demand justice.
Seasoned veteran animators with feature animation experience are being recruited and will paid a stipend. No one's going to get their usual pay. But you can't make 30 minutes of feature quality animation on favors. People need to be compensated for their time and more importantly, their talents.
The Budget Breakdown:
- Animation (66%) $100,000
- Rewards Fulfillment (15%) $22,500
- Shipping Costs (8%) $12,500
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees (10%) $15,000

Who Are You?
My name is Derek Friesenborg, the Writer and Director of Two-Headed Cop. I live and work in Santa Monica, CA.
I've worked in the animation industry for over fifteen years as a character animator and supervising animator. Along the way I've created animation for studios including Walt Disney Feature Animation, Sony Pictures Animation, and Digital Domain.
It's been a great ride and creatively gratifying, but it was finally time to step out own my own and create the story and world of Two-Headed Cop. I hope you'll join with me and support making this unique project.
If you've made it this far down, you're a real trooper and we'd love to have you be part of the Two-Headed Cop team. Please pledge and we'll bask in your awesomeness.
