About

When the gods of religions and days passed suddenly appear in the modern era, deities clash mercilessly as they battle over who has the right to rule over humanity. Society and the world as we know it is plunged into chaos, and man suffers as the war rages on. Forty years later, a human ascends into godhood, and with his newfound power has the chance to end the war and shape the world.

Theocalypse is a roleplaying game in the vein of the Persona, SMT, and early Final Fantasy games. Planned as a trilogy, Theocalypse features:

- A Mature Storyline: Theocalypse asks questions about human nature, the nature of power, what separates a man from a god, and other heavy philosophical questions.

- Serious Choices: The decisions you make will shape the world around you, as well as change the way the story concludes. In Theocalypse the choices are not black and white, as there’s no such thing as absolute morality. Rather than “good” or “bad” options it’s all shades of grey, and you’ll have to live with the choices you make.

- Combat redefined: A new tactical combat system allows for more strategy and greater depth.

- Classes, classes, classes: Each character has access to multiple roles and classes they can use, and no two classes play the same. Customize, strategize, and set up your team to match your play style.

- Mythology in a blender: Mythologies ranging from Native American to Egyptian, Mapuche to Shinto, and many others interact and clash in the world of Theocalypse.

- Seamless transitions from episode to episode: Save file compatibility allows you to keep your choices, levels, and progress throughout the entirety of the Theocalypse trilogy.

As gods suddenly appeared among humanity, the world at first didn’t know how to react. Beings claiming to be the gods of myth and legend stepped into the spotlight of the world stage. Some seemed archaic, some modern, but one trait was common to them all: the desire for power. Some offered their services to the governments of their countries while others threatened the human rule. It was a time of uncertainty and fear; the world was not sure what these new deities were capable of. Then, violence erupted. Malsumis, a god of nature and cruelty, had no intention of waiting to rule. On January 13th 2012, Malsumis attacked Hill Air Force Base in Utah, leaving no survivors. In response, governments around the world ordered the surrender of all Deities into their custodies. They resisted, and the war officially began.

In less than a year’s time, the world was under Deitic control. Guns, tanks, bullets and missiles were no match for the power of the new gods. Crippling defeat after defeat forced nations into surrender; their militaries obliterated, the loss of life astronomical. But the war did not end with humanity’s surrender. It quickly became apparent that the so called gods had little love for each other. Many truly believed in their own divinity, many blindly believed in the validity of their own religion, many simply didn’t like each other, and most didn’t want to share the world with one another. So they turned on each other. The initial battles were bloody and horrific; god slaughtered god in a terrible free-for-all. Within months, over half of the gods were dead. Those that remained quickly realized that a different tactic was called for. They established headquarters where they could, took land and populations under their rule, and the nature of the war changed. They recruited soldiers from their human followers, armed them with weapons and power.

And thus, the second half of the Deitic War began. For the next few years, the remaining deities turned their sights on their own kingdoms. Some used the time to enrich the lives of their people. Some used the time to search for answers to the many questions they had. Others used the time to prepare for the inevitable rekindling of combat. Constant border skirmishes meant the war was still in full swing, but the deities bid their time, waiting for the right moment to strike anew. Unknown to all, there were other unseen forces on the move. An ordinary human would soon become a god, and the world would be plunged once more into battle, to end what had begun so long ago.

Theocalypse is a mature game with serious questions about religion, humanism, faith, and the nature of man, and thus is written with a mature audience in mind. It’s not preachy, it’s not going to try and convert you to one religion or another, but it will ask you to think.

The Lost: The player character. Born as a slave in the kingdom of Malsumis, he belongs to the Steelworker caste of Malsumis’ society. Orphaned at an early age, The Lost’s only family is his best friend and cousin Lauren who works with him in the foundry. His whole life changes after an encounter with a mysterious woman, who tells him that she is putting humanity’s fate in his hands.

Lauren: The cousin of the protagonist, she took The Lost in after the death of his parents. An orphan herself, Lauren took on the role of Big Sister for her younger cousin, and has always made sure that the Lost has enough food to eat and clothes on his back. Lauren has rarely had time for fun, and working at the foundry has toughened her up.

Miguel Vargas: One of the only human children to be born to a deity, Miguel is the son of Nanabozho, the Great Hare. As such, Miguel grew up as the Prince of the Midwest United States. His father taught him many things: patience, strategy, kindness, and the art of combat. While Miguel was thankful for all his knowledge, he was deeply aware that his father was something that he was not. He was human, and his father something more. Although he loved his father he could not help but feel a rift growing between them, between man and the divine. With the appearance of the Lost, for the first time Miguel became aware that it was possible for a human being to become deitic. Thus, Miguel pledges to follow the Lost loyally, hoping that he too will be able to transcend his humanity like his father before him.

Cecelia James: Cecelia has seen a few gods come and go, but in her heart of hearts she knows that The Lost is the true god she was meant to follow. Cecelia could be described as a bible-thumper, but there’s much more to her than that. At her core, Cecelia wishes to see a world without suffering. She is, however, willing to do whatever it takes to get there, and heaven help you if you don’t believe that her way is the right one. As the leader of the Church that comes to worship The Lost, she plans on doing whatever it takes to make him the prime god in town. With her disarming charm and her cunning mind, she'll hold nothing back to catapult The Lost to the top of the pantheon.

Serious Choices, Serious Consequences: Theocalypse is a game all about choices; whether to rule benevolently or wrathfully, which gods to ally with, which gods to destroy, and how much of your humanity you are willing to give up in return for power. The choices are not black and white, as there’s no such thing as absolute morality. Rather than “good” or “bad” options it’s all shades of grey, and you’ll have to live with the choices you make and their consequences.

Strategic Battle, Redefined: Theocalypse takes the tried-and-true RPG style battles and reimagines them for new levels of strategy and depth. In battle, your party shares a single resource called Tech Points (TP) among all members, and learning to juggle moves that give TP and cost TP will be key to victory. Battles resolve in turns, and the player must lock in all moves for the turn without knowing how the enemy will react. Plan ahead, lest you leave your party exposed!

As a company putting out our first game, Kickstarter gives us the unique opportunity to help subsidize our costs and allow us to use the money to make Theocalypse bigger and better! Here's how we'll be using the funding:

Any additional money we receive beyond our goal will go straight to improving graphics, environmental art, and more!

Risks and challenges

As with any game development there are of course challenges that our team will face, but we're confident that we can overcome them without losing too much blood or losing too many limbs. We're working full time on churning this game out!

Our biggest risk is to our timeline; it's possible that things such as meteor showers, mercury in retrograde, alien invasions, or lemming tsunamis may slow down development and cause us to take more time releasing Theocalypse. Still, we'll fight on against any natural (or supernatural) disaster and make sure we release a game of high quality that's fun to play!
