About this project
This is the solution for all developers who want to create their own game characters but don't have artistic skills.
Update: Watch this preview of the customizable pirate characters!
Update: Watch this short clip to see how one single toon brings you countless different characters!
InDee Toons makes game development easy by providing a wealth of fully animated customizable characters to populate your game world with.
They can be immediately integrated into any engine, allowing you to focus on gameplay, story and environment design without having to worry about character art.
Have you ever wondered why there is no reliable source for royalty free game assets online?
Indie games have become increasingly popular over the last two decades, not least because of crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and the boom of mobile devices. While there are wonderful game engines accessible to everyone, with some of them requiring almost no programming skills, the sources for assets are still limited.
Awesome games deserve amazing art!
That is why the process of acquiring game art needs to be simplified.
Hiring an artist to do the art for your game always raises some questions on both sides:
Will the timeframes, budget and quality requirements be met? What about licensing?
InDee Toons avoids all these risks and doubts, because what you see is what you get, and you get it right away.
- 50 nicely rendered game-ready characters
- body parts of different toons can be mixed to create unique toons
- every toon has a different custom head generator
- source files for Spine skeletons and animations included
- pre-compiled sprite packs included
- high resolution
- a lot of animations
- special effects like glowing weapons
How can the Toons be customized?
Every toon comes as a pack of precompiled sprites ready for use and a set of source data for the skeletal animation tool Spine.
The customization set includes the body parts as images and the skeleton and animation data you can adjust with Spine to modify proportions.
You can mix parts of different toons to create individual characters, like a paper doll.
On top of that, the head can be fully customized with the custom head generator.
What is the custom head generator?
Every toon comes with a different custom head generator.
This is another Spine file only for the head, containing different head shapes, hair styles, eyes, ears, noses, and more.
You can compose a unique head for your toons by selecting the facial features that suit your toon best and by adjusting the scale, position, rotation and color of them.
The custom head generator also includes a very long animation that creates billions of different faces for you to choose from, by mixing the different parts of the head and interpolating their attributes.
For the blinking and the talking view of the head, there is a copy of the long animation included with open mouth and closed eyes, so you can easily generate all 3 versions of your custom head to complete your toon.
What can InDee Toons be used for?
"We are always on the lookout for cool stuff created with Spine.
InDee Toons will be a huge asset for people needing animations or just a starting point for their games. Definitely something we will be watching closely."
- Søren Nielsen & Nate Sweet, Developers of Spine
No matter what kind of game you are working on, InDee Toons can do almost anything, from simple jump & run games via complex action RPGs to classical adventure games.
Can I use InDee Toons?
And I would love to see them in your game!
It doesn't matter if you are using Unity, Game Maker, GameSalad or any other engine or programming language, because in addition to the customizable files, you get a pack of pre-rendered image files.
How does the licensing work?
With the exception of some fancy exclusive kickstarter rewards, the characters will be provided under a royalty free license.
That means, the toons are non-exclusively licensed, so if you acquire a license, you will be allowed to use the toon in as many free or commercial projects as you like, as long as you do not attempt to re-sell the assets or make them obtainable for others in any way.
This applies to precompiled sprites, as well as to the customized characters you create with the provided assets.
You can use the characters for prototyping, your next social media app and your arcade sidescroller game, it is up to you.
Bestiary of InDee Toons is a reward every backer with a pledge of $5 or more will get.
It is a digital book, containing all InDee Toons with a picture and some information.
The names of all backers will be listed in the credits of the Bestiary!
Early backers have the opportunity to get extremely rare and exclusive rewards for helping us to reach the funding goal.
ones among you who are striving for a glimmer of immortality:
Some reward tiers enable you to determine almost every aspect of a toon, from the name via the appearance to the animations.
Do you want to be the hero of a game? Check out our "You as an InDee Toon" reward. Just send us a photograph of you and receive a unique toon that is modeled on the photograph.
STRETCH GOAL 1 - Male and female versions for every toon
STRETCH GOAL 2 - Customizable lighting
There will be customizable rim lights from the left and from the right for every body part of every toon. These can be changed in color and intensity to make your toons perfectly fit the mood of your game environments.
What happens when all toons are created?
When all backers have received their downloads, the toons will be available for purchase on my website.
I am very excited about this project, because I think it is the missing link in the evolution of indie game development.
If we can raise enough funds, I would love to do some theme packs and additional assets for the toons, so they could be even more customized.
What will the money be used for?
is the most rewarding job I can think of, creating art is a time-consuming task.
From the first concept of a character to the final polish of the animations, there is a long way to go.
hopefully allowing me to completely focus on the toons with all the dedication they deserve, and to cover some of the
expenses I had during the past months of working on InDee Toons, the raised funds of
this project will be used to buy better hardware and some software licenses to
produce even better characters in less time.
Some features provided with the stretch goals will also result in larger file sizes, so more webspace will be needed.
How can I contribute to InDee Toons?
With your pledge, you can help to bring this resource for indie developers to life. In addition to that, you can contribute to InDee Toons as a part of the community and make decisions to have the character of your dreams created.
We want to closely stay in touch with you, the backers, and we will use your feedback to furtherly improve the assets in appearance and animation.
If you want to help even more, you can sign up to dropbox via my referral link - this will get us some more webspace for the toons.
And you can spread the word and tell all your friends about InDee Toons!
Special thanks to Katrin Russell for giving her angelic voice to the toons and for helping me with practically everything.
Thank YOU for helping us make this happen.
With your support, InDee Toons will get off the ground, and hopefully, this is just the foundation of a larger platform supplying royalty free 2D game art accessible to everyone.
Risks and challenges
Most of the hard work is already done, we have got decent techniques and a smooth workflow.
When creating something you are really passionate about, the biggest risk is always delay through feature creep, because you always want to add more amazing features.
Not even famous and seasoned adventure game designers are safe from that!
This phase has already been overcome for InDee Toons (resulting in our fantastic stretch goals).
Of course I am not immune to acts of nature, so if I get eaten by zombies, or if a solar storm destroys all electronic devices on earth, I guess we can just call it bad luck.
As the rewards (except for the unique top-level tier) include no shipping, the technical risks are close to zero.
Nevertheless, the estimated delivery dates are calculated with a buffer to take unforeseen difficulties into account.
We look forward to an exciting experience with InDee Toons and you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
