ART IS NOT A LUXURY

The current political climate has made me wonder: what the fuck am I doing with my life? Does art matter? Book publishing — comic books, really? You're serious?

Maybe this is a common line of thought...

But you know what? Again: Art is not a luxury. Things are looking severely bleak right now in America. Art functions as a beacon of light, a way to illuminate a way forward, to prompt questions, to communicate, to express ideas.

Art is a small political act. Just waking up, being alive lately feels that way. It's a major struggle. So when I openly wonder what you do with a life - I think the answer is this: you fill it with meaningful people, you try to enact positive change, you do things you love and you do them with people you love.

Anyway - we have a new slate of books this fall. They're gorgeous, genuine and real — produced by some of the most exciting young artists from creative pockets all over the world. Sab Meynert in Toronto; Tommi Parrish formerly in Melbourne, now in Montreal; Jake Terrell in Brooklyn; Carta Monir in Michigan; Simon Hanselmann originally from Tasmania, now in Seattle; and a new full color issue of Altcomics Magazine featuring interviews with Maggie Umber, Juliacks, Christopher L. G. Hill, Tracy Auch, Wiley Guillot and part 1 of a larger look at the rise of feminism in Korea as a counter to the growing "Alt-Right" movement by Kim Jooha.

ABOUT OUR BOOK BUNDLES

We've been using Kickstarter as a mechanism for pre-orders and curated book bundles since 2010. This is our 8th Kickstarter. It's been a powerful tool allowing for discovery, discussion and distribution.

Our Kickstarters are simply put, how we keep the lights on for our company. Think of them as NPR style fundraisers operating as a way to sell small curated book bundles. Unlike NPR style fundraisers, where a donation nets you a small token item (that in another context would be overpriced), we are selling these book bundles at a lower than retail cost and giving you a closer connection with us as a label and with our authors. Which we think is pretty cool.

For a more indepth overview of the titles included in this Fall 2016 book bundle, keep reading below.

Sprawling Heart
Sab Meynert
5.8 x 7.8" (landscape)
52pp
full color offset
smythsewn
MSRP 9.95$

Intimate, abstract drawings, paintings, and words collide as powerful agents of meaning.

Meynert's work is both graphic and lush, whether it's a hand-printed zine or full-scale drawing. — CBC Arts

Sab Meynert is a Toronto illustrator whose works look like they could have been created digitally, but really they are meticulously rendered pen/marker drawings. — Juxtapoz

Sprawling Heart is an intimate musical of paper, paint, and ink. Inward rumination's reach outward as exhalation's and a whisper becomes a sumptuous song.

Sab Meynert is an artist & writer based in Toronto, whose work has been recognized as a melodic counterpoint to the independent arts publishing sector. Their work spins poetic imagery & text to weave maps of visceral emotions and the multiformity of life's infinitely unfolding nature. Between independently published artist multiples, national & international gallery shows, grant-funded bodies of work, collaborative initiatives with high profile musicians & artists, Meynert is an embodiment of the artist working in dynamic multiplicity.

Perfect Hair
Tommi Parrish
6.2 x 8.9"
72pp
full color offset
smythsewn
MSRP 16.95$

A vivid cross-section of relationships, identity, and the gradations of emotion that color them.

Parrish is great at making panels that you can both read and linger over. The locations and bodies are exaggerated to reach a more realistic and sensorial state. This is an awesome debut comic. — Dash Shaw, author of titles such as Cosplayers, Doctors, Bodyworld, and Bottomless Belly Button

Parrish has one of my favourite traits in a cartoonist: intense passion for the craft. They are rapidly evolving and experimenting wildly and it’s joyful to watch. — Simon Hanselmann, author of NY Times bestselling titles such as Megahex and Meg and Mogg in Amsterdam

Perfect Hair, the debut graphic novel by Tommi Parrish, is a vivid set of vignettes that balances emotional honesty with a keen cultural awareness. Deploying their bold, innovative style to navigate topics such as fear, loneliness, identity, body politics, and more, Parrish is a promising newcomer from the burgeoning Australian altcomics scene.

Tommi parrish is a cartoonist who lives in-between Melbourne, Australia and Montreal. Their work has appeared in various anthologies, magazines, mini comics, gallery shows in New York, Argentina, and throughout Australia. Tommi has work in the permanent collection at the gallery of Western Australia and has presented talks and workshops for the Melbourne Writers Festival, the Emerging Writers Festival, and the Girls Write Up Festival.

Extended Play
Jake Terrell
6.2 x 8"
112pp
1, 2, & 5 color offset
smythsewn
poster 8 x 21"
MSRP 18.95$

Jake Terrell's debut collection employs a deft, impetuous line to toy with notions of youthful abandon and surrealistic malaise.

“Extended Play” is an apt title. The pleasure of Terrell's line, and his storytelling, is infectious. It’s a battle cry for cartooning as mark making, as line design, for thinking of drawing as handwriting and a form of searching and discovery. It may be his first book, but already he seems to understand what IT is, better than most. I could read his work all day long. — Sammy Harkham, author of Everything Together and editor of the Kramers Ergot series

Extended Play, the debut collection by Jake Terrell, seizes upon the millennial zeitgeist from an array of angles. From the haze of summer to the conflicting feelings of ennui and hope that guide the figures in Terrell’s magical realist landscapes, there’s an effortlessness to his work that obscures the heightened sense of understanding he brings to the form.

Jake Terrell is a cartoonist and illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY. His comics have a loose, confident line, often focusing on a youth-centric cast of characters written into magical realist or measured fantastical narratives.

Secure Connect
Carta Monir
5 x 7"
24pp
1 color risograph
saddle-stitched
MSRP 8$

Carta’s comics are so unusually intimate — I end up craving the way they make me feel bare and bashful. — Carolyn Nowak

Secure Connect: For the first time, a peek into an anonymous online support group and the secrets it holds. Internal conflict, raw emotion, and absolute confidentiality meet in this story that blurs the line between autobio and fiction.

Carta Monir lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a cartoonist and podcast host.

Altcomics Magazine 1-4

1ST YEAR OF ALTCOMICS MAGAZINE

Altcomics Magazine 1

Over the past 6 months we have started laying the groundwork for our most ambitious project yet, a feature-length documentary on contemporary cartoonists and the largely fragmented industry they navigate. This magazine will act as a printed companion, released on a quarterly basis. This first collector's issue features Aidan Koch drawing in Central Park, Sab in the Upper West Side, Lala Albert & Leah Wishnia in Lala's Bushwick bedroom studio, and Nou, the cover artist.

Altcomics Magazine 2

The printed companion to our documentary film—in—progress. This second issues features interviews with cover artist Sarah Ferrick (Chicago), Frank Santoro (Pittsburgh), Austin English (New York), Kristina Tzekova, Scott Longo, & Dylan Williams.

Altcomics Magazine 3

"I'm hoping to do a non-linear issue that denotes these comic artists who work with time as something sentient or ungraspable." This issue's guest editor, Sab Meynert, speaks about their approach to the first guest edited issue.

The printed companion to our documentary film—in—progress continues. This issue sees Sab Meynert showcase the work of GG, E Howey, and Juli Majer.

Altcomics Magazine 4

Featuring interviews with Maggie Umber, Juliacks, Christopher L. G. Hill, Tracy Auch, Wiley Guillot and part 1 of a larger look at the rise of feminism in Korea as a counter to the growing "Alt-Right" movement by Kim Jooha. **exact contents of magazine subject to change.

Risks and challenges

Problems crop up - artists hand in books late, production can go into overtime, issues can occur at the printer or fulfillment level. Over the years we've gotten pretty adept at dealing with these issues as they occur.

How are we going to deal with this? All of the titles (Sprawling Heart, Perfect Hair, Extended Play) are all printed and will be arriving at our distributors warehouse in TN in a matter of weeks. Secure Connect is at our office, DRONE is with the printer in Chicago. Altcomics Magazine #4 will be at the printer in 3-4 weeks. By the time the Kickstarter ends we hope to have most of the titles ready to be photographed and scanned for the digital editions.

We will continue to improve our communications with customers to alert them of any potential delays and allow for refunds, on a case by case basis.

NOTE: if you are unsatisfied with your order, DM us for details on a full refund.
