About

"Nobody is publishing weird, avant-garde, and visually innovative art comix like 2dcloud. It’s the kind of work that, by its very nature, will never be lucrative, but they do it because they believe in artists, and I believe in them.

I want to see art with a unique hand. I want artists that tell stories no one else can. I want my visual vocabulary expanded when I look at what you do. Comics that look how a comic should look are for babies and for the birds." Julia Gfrörer, author of Laid Waste, and Black is the Color

HELLO FRIEND.

My name is Maggie Umber. And my name is Raighne.

We’re co-founders and publishers at 2dcloud — a small quixotic and mercurial publisher based in Chicago. And our future is in jeopardy.

For the past couple of years we’ve been using Kickstarter as a pre-order platform to sell curated bundles of artist books, zines, and graphic novels. This ‘direct-to-consumer-box’ model allows us to sell bundles of books at a significant discount and build a closer relationship with readers.

What makes this Kickstarter different from our previous ones is that this one gives us a chance to reboot our label. The last couple of years have been a painful trial. This project is built for us to regain our footing by showcasing our 12 year publishing history, as well as the promise of our future. Smaller zine packs and larger artist boxes are newly curated for the first time, offering something different and ranging in prices from $9 to $75. View the reward tiers for descriptions of what comes in each pack or box. Every offering comes with a mini-print, exclusive to this Kickstarter. At the $99 level we offer a look at our future, our Spring Box 2019, featuring 7 colorful and exciting books by artists at the top of their game.

None of these would be possible without this Kickstarter. Please consider backing so that we can bring these books to life <3

MIRROR MIRROR 3 | Haejin Park, Paige Mehrer, and Sophie Page.

6 × 8" • 186 pp • full color offset • smyth-sewn softcover • MSRP $24.95

Mirror Mirror 3 is a vibrant maelstrom of mixed media, arriving at a stunning intersection of innocence, joy, and color.

"This is not a comics anthology that just compiles various contributions by different artists but rather one that can only exist as one piece, one that was created by three parts of one body with a shared vision.

These stories don’t make you see the individual artists behind them - these stories want to tell you that they created themselves and will keep recreating even after you put the book down.  A living organism of the most convincing examples that show how masterful and unpretentiously poetic comics can be." Aisha Franz, author of Shit is Real

"Lush dancing forms in kaleidoscopic color and style, Mirror Mirror 3 is animated, playful and delicious. A collection of delightfully joyous work vibrating with creative vigor. An ornate dream box of beautifully wrapped candies you've never tried before."Lale Westvind, author of Grip

"Plum was the best thing at MoCCA this year."Nick Gazin, comics critic and artist

Mirror Mirror 3 was produced in partnership with the editors and authors at Plum Press, a small publisher and artist collective based in Brooklyn. This volume of the anthology series is divided into three sections, one by each of the authors, with collaborative work connecting the stories. Themes throughout include nature, introspection and interpersonal relationships. Plum’s imagery is vibrant, emotive, and mythic.

COPY KITTY | KYUNG ME.

11 × 8" • 56 pp • black & white offset •  smyth-sewn hardcover •  MSRP $19.95

Adult picture book comprised of intricate, surreal graphite illustrations that tell the tale of obsessive love and longing and the maddening, self-inflicted contortions of identity endured to fit perceived expectations and norms.

"Each drawing in this series took twenty hours, and is full of references to Korean art, Looney Tunes, and 1950s illustrations. While it’s a surreal tale, the universally relatable themes of identity and acceptance allow the viewer to easily digest Kyung Me’s elaborately detailed, black and white drawings, and the ideas present sit close to home." —Rebecca Fulleylove, editor at Google Arts & Culture

Copy Kitty explores themes of identity, belonging and love through a cat who painfully and continually reinvents itself in pursuit of adoration and an elusive ideal. Autobiographically driven, the narrative strikes a chord through common experiences conveyed authentically, with sharp perspective and deep reflection on the self-destructive consequences of perceived ideals and sublimation of identity.

The format of the book presents each of the highly detailed illustrations alternating with a blank page. Copy Kitty is a based on a series of illustrations Me exhibited at galleries in NY, met with strong critical acclaim. In 2018, work from Copy Kitty was featured in Artspace, having been selected on the favorites list from the New York NADA preview by prominent art collectors Susan and Michael Hort.

Kyung Me is an artist and illustrator living in New York. She holds an MFA in painting from the Yale School of Art and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York galleries and beyond. She is best known for her series of illustrations and debut graphic novel, Bad Korean, critically acclaimed by Vice, Huffington Post, and Hyperallergic.

RÖHNER | MAX BAITINGER.

6 × 8.2" • 216 pp •  black & white offset •  smyth-sewn softcover •  MSRP $18.95

Previously published in German by Rotopol Press, Röhner is a delightfully detailed field guide to the every day tasks of living in an apartment — making coffee, watering plants, and maintaining order and a careful balance with neighbors — until that order is upset.

"Röhner expertly shows off Max's inventive draftsmanship, droll wit, and precise cartooning. It's one of my favorite books for 2019." Gina Wynbrandt, author of Someone Please Have Sex With Me

"Max is such a good observer of interpersonal relations, and therefore a great storyteller. Needless to say that his drawings are magnetic. I keep staring at them and think: How did he do that? Röhner is one of my favorite books." —Anna Haifisch, author of The Artist

"Designs whole worlds with a few lines."Sabine Danek, Critic

"Baitinger leaves the reader in the dark about the big picture. He prefers to show details: how the protagonist spins his appointment calendar in the air to indicate that he has no time. The way aluminium confetti pours out of a letter onto a shag rug. Baitinger breaks up an everyday matter like brewing coffee into many small steps, each in an individual image: ‘Switch on boiler. Insert pot. Fill tank. Insert filter."Josa Mania-Schlegel, journalist at Krautreporter

Max Baitinger’s dry humor and precise drawings deftly personify his über persnickety protagonist, simply referred to as P., whose regimented life is disrupted by the arrival of Röhner, an unloved houseguest, who imposes upon his psyche and offsets the careful balance with his gregarious, omnipresent neighbor. Devious tricks and hilarious imaginations of Röhner’s elimination take shape, from painstakingly making up Röhner’s guestroom and then piercing the air mattress to cause a slow leak — to visions of an exploding coffee pot tearing off Röhner’s face.

Baitinger has three books published and Röhner is his first English language publication.

Born in Penzberg, Upper Bavaria in 1982, Max Baitinger has been drawing comics since his apprenticeship as a carpenter. He studied illustration at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. His work is influenced by the Duden Pictorial Dictionary of 1992, Beautiful Living; Stories by Luise Boege and Agota Kristof. As described by a critic, he "designs whole worlds with a few lines." His book Heimdall was honorably mentioned at the International Comic Salon Erlangen 2014 (ICOM). The German version of Röhner was a finalist for the comic book award of the Berthold Leibinger Foundation and has been featured on The Goethe Institut website. It‘s also published in France and Spain. In 2017 he went on a reading tour with his latest book "Birgit", the story of an office worker. It was featured by It’s Nice That and was awarded with the German Illustrators Award "Hans Meid Preis". Baitinger is an organizer of "The Millionaires Club" comic festival in Leipzig and he works as a freelance cartoonist and illustrator.

YET HERE WE ARE DEALING WITH THE THINGS WE SHOULD HAVE IGNORED | TOMMI PARRISH.

6 × 8" • 192 pp •  full color offset •  smyth-sewn softcover •  MSRP $27.95

Love, trauma, sex, relationships, working it out and trying hard. A collection of seven years worth Parrish’s work, focusing on earlier, short-run and out of print works.

"Tommi Parrish's comics illustrate the plasticity of memory, shifting and flowing along the arrow of time. In reflection, one doesn't remember every detail. Instead, bodies take up psychic space and feel emotional weight. Thoughts, voices, and moments in between fill the view, as all else falls away. Through this lens, the reader can recognize themselves. Comics can be a whisper in the reader's mind. Tommi's voice shows us something subtle, recognizable, and close."Ron Rege Jr, The New Cartoon Utopia

"Parrish is great at making panels that you can both read and linger over. The locations and bodies are exaggerated to reach a more realistic and sensorial state." Dash Shaw, director of My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea

This collection chronicles the evolution of Parrish’s storytelling and artistic style, focusing on themes of identity, love, queerness, and loneliness. Yet Here We Are Dealing With The Things We Should Have Ignored also includes early work Parrish's fan base is not likely to have seen before.

Tommi Parrish is an Australian cartoonist and has served as art editor of the literary journal The Lifted Brow. Parrish's work has been reviewed by NPR Books, Vulture, PEN, Eyes on Design, The Comics Journal, and many others.

GRAND ELECTRIC THOUGHT POWER MOTHER | LALE WESTVIND.

6 × 8.2" • 272 pp • 3 color offset •  smyth-sewn softcover •  MSRP $24.95 • edited by Kim Jooha

Muscular women warriors fill the pages with their energy, power, speed, force, gravity, and weight.

"It’s an easily achievable pleasure to get lost in the world of Lale Westvind’s comics. The expansive quality of her sprawling intergalactic terrain ranges from the outer limits of the cosmos to the inner workings of the mind. . . . Her characters and readers alike may sense they are bushwhacking through infinity, and that’s kind of the point." —Karen Peltier, critic at The Comics Journal

"Lale’s work is so strong that it can be used to sell the idea of comics in general. It summarizes the vanguard at this exact moment in time, even as it’s basically ahead of the curve, and waiting for the rest of the world to catch up, with its advancement of the Kirby-to-Panter lineage to herald the female future the more optimistic have been prophesying."Brian Nicholson, critic at Long Box Coffin

"Bow down before Lale Westvind, Queen of Comics."Gabe Fowler owner of Desert Island and director of CAB

Grand Electric Thought Power Mother is a collection of Lale Westvind's critically acclaimed risograph comics, available for major distribution for the first time, with new work. This highly influential body of work is comprised of epic stories with spiritual themes. Poetic and intellectual, the content explores the line between thoughts and reality and perception, the nature of energy and consciousness, collective consciousness and experience, and how will and intent can create collective action. It all plays out in narratives of women warriors literally battling and wrestling through these states and concepts against science fiction, mythological and psychic backdrops. Muscular women warriors fill the pages with their energy, power, speed, force, gravity, and weight. This powerful collection fills a space for physically and psychologically strong female characters that is rarely occupied in our culture or comics as a whole.

The artwork includes paintings, drawings and illustrated renderings of stills taken from Westvind's video work, primarily in black and white, with cover art and some interior panels in three colors. Comics included in this collection: Now and Here, Other Way, Trial One, Tornar and Riparna; Double Head Tour, Yazar and Arkadas, and Mary.

This is the birthing of an entire cast of truly original characters, the likes of which Marvel and DC have not imagined. These are stories which are queer in their essence. They seek to describe that which does not exist yet. Within these tales are countless new technologies, philosophies, creatures and beings; A treasure trove of new ideas. The author sought to explore the idea that thought has an effect on one's surroundings. To explore the beginning of the cosmos. Thought as a force unto itself. Intention as a force of energy to be controlled. Grand Electric Thought Power Mother reads like the found spiritual scripture of an alien world.

Lale Westvind is an Ignatz Award winner and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been published in Smoke Signal, Lumpen Magazine, Arthur, Monster, Happiness, and others.

HOTEL VIBES | CHOU YI.

5.85 × 8.25" • 54 pp •  black & white and color offset •  smyth-sewn hardcover •  MSRP $14.95 • edited by Kim Jooha

Humor, fantasy, and subtle moments of daily life. Seven wordless, experimental comics transform everyday scenes into pictures of imagination and vitality.

"To read Chou Yi's comics is as if you are walking through one of her dreams. I want to live in this blobby world that she has created, and drink what her girls drink. I want to live in her brain forever!"Juli Majer, artist and member of independent experimental-comics press DDOOGG

"The magic worlds of Chou Yi seem rooted in the nostalgia of an unknown space & time. Beings and objects move and flow within their own specific laws of nature thru dark but humorous settings. One of my favorite artists, for sure." —Elevatorteeth, author of Welcome to Myself

Hotel Vibes is a collection of wordless stories, featuring an interview by Kim Jooha. Illustrated in black and white, with 10 pages in three color, Yi’s oversized, curvy nude figures stand out in stark contrast to angular backdrops, playing with negative and positive space. Her illustrations are inviting and masterfully simple, directing the viewer’s eye through each scene to create the narrative and convey a sense of playfulness and suspense.

Chou Yi is an artist, illustrator and graphic designer from Taiwan. She has exhibited her work in Japan, France, Canada and China. She is known for her artistic comics and zines, published in limited editions through independent publishers such as Nieves Books since 2010.

DIARY COMICS | TARA BOOTH.

8.25 × 11.7" • 192 pp •  full color offset •  smyth-sewn softcover •  MSRP $24.95

A bold, graphic diary of the first few months of living sober, illustrated with vibrant marker drawings. Honesty, pain, and jaw-dropping humor.

"Tara Booth's drawings are funny, emotional, spontaneous, raw, dazzling and precise all at the same time, in a way I haven't seen before."Brecht Evens, author of The City of Belgium

"Tara understands the language of comics fully. Her stories slide past the analytical part of the brain and directly into a deeper, more gratifying kind of understanding. Her bright colors bring joy and humor to the heaviest, darkest follies hidden inside ourselves."Gabrielle Bell, author of Everything is Flammable

"Tara Booth is one of the best cartoonists to come along in recent times. Her pages are funny and direct and sad and filthy and are incredibly fun to look at. One of the best colorists in the game."Simon Hanselmann, author of Bad Gateway

Diary Comics begins following Tara Booth during her first 30 days of sobriety — visiting the coasts, reaching out to an ex, nature, friends and family. This book chronicles the artist’s daily life living sober with humor, honesty, and astonishingly uncensored scenarios drawn in vivid color. From her initial move to Chicago, to her return to her hometown of Philadelphia, Tara navigates her life in these pages with an earnest and eager sense of wonder. Diary Comics is at turns insightful, intoxicating, and intimate.

Tara Booth is an artist from Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been featured in the Best American Comics 2018, on Mashable and in Publishers Weekly, Bloomberg Magazine, It’s Nice That, and VICE, among other magazines and websites. She is well known for her content on Instagram, where she has over 80K followers.

FRIENDS FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

Maggie & Raighne; friendship —> dating —> marriage —> divorce —> still best friends :)
Maggie & Raighne; friendship —> dating —> marriage —> divorce —> still best friends :)

We met in 1998 at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, a small public high school centered around an arts curriculum in Minnesota. Like a lot of teenagers, it was a pivotal time for us. Prior to Perpich, school felt like a very alienating and depressing experience.

Perpich offered an alternative. By being surrounded by other creatives, given space, curriculum, projects — we were able to not only discover ourselves, but able to build these important lasting relationships with peers. It’s in this way that small emergent communities arise in everyday life.

With 2dcloud, while this wasn’t the goal from the start per se, it did quickly become a kind of ‘north star’ for us. Because the need for meaning, identity, friendship, being a part of something larger than oneself — these needs don’t suddenly dissipate as people get older. If anything, these basic needs grow stronger.

The results have been stunning and innovative via the publication of these books. These artists are the new masters of the form. We are thrilled and honored to have been able to work with them. The success of this Kickstarter will enable us to continue doing so.

FINANCIAL TROUBLES &
WHERE THE MONEY GOES.

If you do anything long enough, at some point you are bound to stumble. Throughout the labels first 8+ years of operation, we managed to pay our artists and print partners consistently and on time. But the last few years have hit us hard.

In getting to where we are at now, we also managed to reach some significant milestones: landing an excellent distribution partner, more than tripling our print output, and garnering press from Globe and Mail, LA Times, TheFADER, Bitch Magazine, Huffington Post, CBC Arts, Blouin Artinfo, TCJ, Hyperallergic, Kirkus Reviews, Bomb Magazine, amongst others.

Success of this Kickstarter will get us current with our outstanding debts to both artists and printer partners at a quicker rate than if we just put money in from our day jobs. It will also cover the offset printing costs of our 2019 Spring Box, and help us purchase a risograph printer so that we can achieve greater efficiency in the future.

Below is a breakdown of where the money goes:

ARTIST ROYALTIES — 25K
PRINTING COSTS — 69K
PACKAGING & EQUIPMENT — 5K
KICKSTARTER FEE — 5K

IMPORTANT NOTES: these are estimates. Where appropriate and possible, we will strive to streamline and limit our expenses.  Additionally, we will be raising funds outside of this Kickstarter via sales online, the direct market, the broader book market, the festival circuit, outside projects, and owner's equity from day jobs.

Risks and challenges

This is our 11th Kickstarter. We have always delivered our rewards to backers. Like a lot of projects, sometimes we have been late. But also, sometimes we have been on time, or even early. Print publishing occupies a weird space filled with turbulent waters. Delays could be caused by workload from day jobs, production, artists still wrapping up books, the printing process itself, or shipping. In any case, we will do everything within our power to keep you posted on where your books are. Thank you <3

Most of these books from our Spring 2019 Box are nearly done and we think we have scheduled realistically when backers will receive their orders. Many of the other box and pack selections are largely already printed and will ship immediately.
