About this project
What does it do? With its advanced technology, iOn lets you control your electrical and electronic devices with a wave of your hand – or with your smart phone.
How does it work? Just like the screen on your smart phone, iOn is controlled by a capacitive proximity switching system. We just made the capacitive field bigger, increased its range and added some clever features to make it more stable.
So, unlike your smart phone, you don't have to touch the surface of iOn to control your lights or other electrical devices.
You can simply wave your hand near an iOn switch and the capacitive field reacts to turn iOn on or off. Hold your hand inside the field to make your lights dimmer or brighter. Or use your smart phone. Imagine controlling all of your iOn switches from your iPhone or Android smart phone or even from your smart watch.
iOn can replace almost any standard switch in your home. You can install iOn flush on a wall – or invisibly inside a wall, under a desk or table, inside a cabinet, or beside your bed. Because iOn creates an invisible switching field, you don't have to see iOn for it to work, and iOn doesn't have to see you.

TURN ALMOST ANYTHING INTO A SWITCH – HOW ABOUT A FISHBOWL?
Mount an iOn switch under a desk, cabinet top or table, and you create a switching field immediately above the surface. You can wave your hand through the field to activate the switch. Or extend the switching field using a whole host of household objects. Just put any conductive object in the field and it becomes your switch. A metal sculpture will work. Or a favorite trophy. THE STORY OF ION
The idea first came to light several years ago when Martin, our inventor and chief engineer was leading the development of a talking book for children. He wanted to detect the child’s finger through the pages of the book and then play a relevant sound or phrase. During the feasibility study, he examined capacitive proximity sensing and found it to be a magical technology that is very stable and predictable.
While experimenting with prototypes, he found multiple ways of projecting the field a reasonable distance from the sensing plate and also found that conductive objects placed in the field would allow a person to trigger the field by touching the conductive object. This first came to light when Martin placed a cup of coffee on his workbench near the sensor. When he touched the liquid with a spoon, the field reacted (hence our fishbowl demonstration).
Building multiple light switches around the concept, he tested them for people’s reactions. People loved them, especially when they were completely hidden from view, either inside a wall or under a table.
While researching Kickstarter as a possible launch platform for a new version of a completely different, but successful product currently in use around the world, our team leader decided it was time to finally launch our capacitive switch, while adding the new twist of wireless smart phone control.

WHERE WE'RE AT
We have developed and tested the capacitive field switching to completion and are speaking to a number of manufacturers about joining our sensor to existing wireless home automation systems under our patent to minimize development time.

Risks and challenges
We have confidence in our technology and our amazing team, but there are still unforeseeable factors that we cannot control. Lead times for components can vary, and we must pass a number of certifications in order to ship these devices. We have extensively pre-tested our components, but there may be delays in obtaining device certification from the controlling regulatory bodies.
