A Documentary on the Evolution of Spiritists' Traditions in Puerto Rico
About Let the Spirit Move You: The Documentary
Let the Spirit Move You is a celebration of ancestral belief systems that are a proud and important part of our cultural legacy as African descendants. The documentary focuses on the African based spiritual traditions that continue in Puerto Rico grounded in ancestral worship - espiristmo. Because of misinformation and preconceptions, to date there is little information on the sacred African traditions that are part of the cultural life of Puerto Rico. These traditions have generally been practiced out of public view and now with the advent of Evangelical types of religions labeling these traditions as "devil worship" many practitioners out of fear are going further underground or giving up these important historical ancestral traditions.
Right now, Let the Spirit Move You is a short documentary that I will be screening in advance on May 4, 2013 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). The information and interviews we have collected provide the opportunity for a full-length 60-minute documentary that will be only possible with your support.

Q & A
How Kickstarter works- IS ALL OR NOTHING!
Kickstarter is a new way to fund creative ideas and ambitious endeavors. Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. In other words, if we don’t raise our goal of $15,000, we lose everything. Once we have reached our goal we will contact you to get your address and then we will start working on getting those awesome rewards to you!
How to pledge
Just click the green “Back This Project” button in the upper right-hand corner. You will be asked to input your pledge amount and select a reward. From there, you will go through the Amazon checkout process. You must finish the Amazon checkout process for your pledge to be recorded.
What if we don't reach our goal?
If funding fails, all pledges are canceled and that's that. Your card is not charged, it’s like nothing ever happened. We hope this doesn’t happen! This month will fly by, donate today!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
After our project gets funded, our time during post-production will be our biggest challenge as all documentaries come alive through the many grueling hours of editing. We already have such an array of footage and this is wonderful, but it can also get tricky. This is why we will make sure we lock down an experience editor that can help us narrate a compelling story. You are instrumental to make this happen, so please, help us raise $15K in 30 days!
Also remember that as a Kickstarter backer, you might be supporting a project that may evolve in lots of different ways and the final project may look different from what you expected.
TRUST ME...WE CAN DO THIS!
The succes we have had with our previous projects evidence that we are capable of accomplishing this project and take it to another level.
Our Previous Works
As the founder and president of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) my work has been focused on researching, documenting and sharing the contributions of African and African Diaspora cultures. Part of this work focused on the sacred belief systems that continue to inform the lives of African descendants in the Americas. All these years of research allowed me to produce two of my most important projects: When the Spirits Dance Mambo, the book and When the Spirits Dance Mambo, the documentary. Both, even though they address spirituality from different perspectives, works were successfully published and received by both peer scholars and my audience in general.
“Viva Marta Moreno Vega! With honesty, humor, and love, she relives her coming-of-age in Spanish Harlem—the highs and the lows—eloquently documenting how deeply rooted West African cultural traditions are in her rich Puerto Rican heritage. Marta Vega’s memoir makes me want to mambo.” ~Susan Taylor, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, about When the Spirits Dance Mambo, the book
“Clearly When the Spirits Dance Mambo goes far beyond the colorful rhythm-driven typical Cuban music and dance documentary. Those elements are there, but shown in their natural place, as part of the religious experience.” ~ Philadelphia City Paper, about When the Spirits Dance Mambo, the documentary
