About

Before the early 1900s, they didn't even have a name for Alzheimer's. They simply called it "old age." Now, we know that's not true. We know that this silent epidemic grows within our minds for decades before it emerges. So, how can we stay silent about it? Only in 1983 did President Reagan declare November as Alzheimer's Awareness Month. It is not enough to wait until you or I am facing the disease head-on to become informed. It must start now. Please help us make our film.

This means that there is not a single person reading this right now that has not been affected by Alzheimer's, whether directly or indirectly. Today, we are witnessing the effect of Alzheimer's on the Baby Boomer generation. In only a few years, we will have to collectively begin to call it what it really is: a silent epidemic.

Our team began to look seriously into this issue and, specifically, its representation in mass audience-oriented media. What we found was that not nearly enough people are involved in this conversation. It is one that is imperative for us to have now. True awareness is what will lead to the miraculous breakthroughs in thinking that we need in order to collectively overcome this disease.

The protagonist, Harold, has built his entire life around a lie. In order to evade a prejudicial society and to protect his wife's feelings, he has repressed his sexuality and his passions. Now, with Alzheimer's taking away his artistic mind, the one man he wants desperately to hold on to is being taken away from him.

Beth, Harold's newly married and pregnant daughter, serves as the caregiver for her father. Navigating the difficulties of the disease, Beth often finds herself, unfairly, in an antagonistic position as her father attempts to preserve what is impossible to preserve in his position. This character serves as a testament to the many volunteers who provide care but involuntarily hurt their loved ones in an effort to save them.

Our commitment to quality motivated us to find our actors early, in order to give them time to fully immerse themselves in their characters. Our decision was made easy by the incredible trio of Bart McCarthy, Ioanna Meli and Brian Jordan Alvarez. To have actors of their calibre putting their faith and commitment into our project makes us feel tremendously honored. While our team is hard at work to raising funds for the film, our lead actors are working tremendously hard on delivering outstanding performances, which is where the heart of our film truly lies.

Our goal in creating "Life in Color" is to emotionally render the harrowing experience that is Alzheimer's disease visible to all audiences. To be sure, our film is NOT a documentary. It is a story that also brings forth questions of faith, self-fulfilment and sexual repression, the final aspect being a key part of how Harold defines himself. "Life in Color" is about identity, about becoming comfortable in one's own skin, in this case, with one's sexual orientation. Not only are we dealing with Alzheimer's, we are also telling the story of a repressed and closeted gay man. This is one of the essential truths of the disease: it does not matter who you are, nor what hopes and dreams you have. We believe in breaking from what is expected and telling richly diverse stories that bring to light alternative voices, struggles and stories; every day, there are people like our protagonist, Harold, struggling to come to terms with their identities - and to protect them. And every day, there is fear, miscommunication and misunderstanding. Our mission with this film is education and communication, about both the disease and the persecution faced by the main character. These are not issues that we can collectively ignore for much longer.

As we move forward on this journey to awareness and freedom of sexuality, even beyond the film, we want you to become part of our incredible team.

                          Director & Co-Writer - Bishal Dutta

Bishal has lived in many places during his lifetime; he was born in India and has moved to Canada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Virginia. His love for film began at age 6 and he has pursued that passion ever since. Having made his first short film at age 14, Bishal has now directed eighteen short films in all genres, from sci-fi and horror to romance and drama. During his two years living in Los Angeles, he has worked with companies such as Spec Scout, LLC, as well as with award-winning filmmakers and mentors such as Salvador Carrasco. After several months at the CinemadaMare program in Italy, in which he wrote and directed three short films, he is currently pursuing a Film Studies degree at the University of California, Berkeley.

Producers - Yulia Safonova & Edward Mkhitaryan

Edward Mkhitaryan and Yulia Safonova are producers and campaign managers on the project. Both moved from Moscow to the United States where they studied film producing at UCLA. Since then, they have produced a number of narratives, music videos and commercials. Yulia Safonova frequently works on powerful, socially conscious short films that incite meaningful action. Some of the films she has produced are "Ask Questions Later" about the Black Lives Matter movement, and "Black Flag", a film dealing with radical terrorists' manipulation of the Islamic religion.

                                 Cinematographer - Matt Lynn

Matthew Lynn is a narrative Cinematographer from Chattanooga, Tennessee. After graduating from Full Sail university with a bachelors in film he moved to Los Angeles to attend the American Film Institute Conservatory's MFA Cinematography program. Matthew has traveled around the world working as the Director of Photography on many projects including both short and feature length films, documentaries, music videos and web series.

David Khodjamirian is a Los Angeles-based production designer. He has graduated from New York Film Academy’s Master of Arts program, where he had a chance to work on more than 65 projects. Since graduation, he has been working as a production designer on a wide range of projects. David has had the pleasure of working on short films, commercials and music videos directed by eminent filmmakers, such as Mauro Borrelli and Alex Sparrow.

His previous Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, 6 years of university and over 2 years of experience in the field give him a strong base in environmental design and spatial thinking. Besides the skills and knowledge in the area, through the years, David has developed an authentic visual language and a keen eye for details.

Below, you can see a simplified version of the entire project plan, including the budgeting process. This campaign has been a major journey for us, one that we have taken seriously and invested many precious hours into. However, we have an even more rigorous and intensive path ahead of us. Keep in touch - "Life in Color" belongs to the community, so there is no awareness if it does not receive your support and attention.

Our team is asking for your help in making a short film. Thousands of short films are made a year, many of which are great films. So, what makes ours unique? We have loved and studied films and filmmaking all of our lives. Our whole team, from the director, Bishal Dutta, to the cinematographer, Matt Lynn, to the producers, Edward and Yulia, have worked on countless productions, gaining experience and creative confidence. Now, we are working together, at the height of our passion, on something we believe in completely. "Life in Color" is personal to all our cast and crew. And, as consummate lovers of cinema, we want to use every tool we have ever picked up in the cinematic language to make a film that is honest, personal and involving in a way only "pure cinema," to paraphrase one of our great mentors, Alfred Hitchcock, can be. "We specifically want to show you Alzheimer's with a rawness and brutality with which it has rarely been presented before.”

We are excited to welcome all of you, our backers, to the "Life in Color" team. It is extremely important to us that we make your investment of time, faith and money worthwhile to you, with high-quality creations made with all of our appreciation and gratitude. Here's our rewards designer:

Risks and challenges

We are adamant about our producer, Yulia Safonova, providing the safest working environment for the crew. And thanks to you, we will have all the necessary filming permits and insurance policies to legitimize our production and make the most of five uninterrupted shooting days. Our main nemesis, as in every project, are the set of force majeure circumstances that can befall a film production, including, but not limited to, elements such as poor weather that can compromise the exact vision of the director and cinematographer, requiring additional days of shooting and additional funds. However, no need to worry, as bad weather is rare in Los Angeles, and other such problems are rarer. We have full faith in our vision and its practicality and if any other circumstances were to arise, we will inform you immediately.
