May 16, 2012: After 29 years as Boston's fiercely independent Alternative music station, WFNX announces that it is being sold to Clear Channel Communications, and news of the sale rattles generations of music fans who had grown to believe that WFNX would always exist at 101.7 on their FM dial.
As the station counts down its last sixty days on the air, current and former WFNX employees reminisce about the station's rich history and reflect on what the sale of this perennial David in a land of radio Goliaths says about the changing ways we relate to music and media.
For the past several months we've been accumulating interviews, video, and images for the documentary, but now we need your help to finish the project!
Want to get an idea what the movie will look like? Here's a sample of a segment-in-progress. It covers an important day in WFNX history . . . the infamous Green Day concert at the Hatch Shell.
Maybe you're saying to yourself, "But I don't live in Boston . . . and I never listened to this radio station before . . . why would I want to donate?" We Want The Airwaves is more than a local story! Here are some reasons you might want to donate, even if you're not already a fan of WFNX. If you're the type of person who tends to root for the underdog and likes to see passion and creativity stand up to money and power, then this is a movie for you! If you're an alternative music fan, and you want a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to champion bands like Nirvana and Green Day when they were still up-and-comers, then this is a movie for you! If you're feeling a little nostalgic for your old tapes or records, and reflecting on how technology has changed the way you relate to media, then this is a movie for you!
What will the money go towards? We understand that money is tight for everybody these days, so the project will proudly uphold the WFNX tradition of doing a lot with a little! This money will go towards some much needed hard drives (video files take up a ton of storage!) and a trip to seek out and interview some of the more elusive WFNX DJs who have spread out across the country since their days in Boston.
We Want The Airwaves would like to say a huge thanks to former WFNX DJ and Music Director, Bruce McDonald for donating the triple-platinum Nirvana disc! See that blank spot in the plaque where the dedication goes? Your name would look pretty good right there!
