What is Never Ending Night?
You can say that Never Ending Night is a 2D side-scrolling exploration game. But that'd be akin to describing a tree as a big stick. Never Ending Night is a game that we poured our heart and soul into. It is a game that evolved as much as we evolved as individuals. It is a game about relationships, about finding yourself, and about confronting your past. The art style and gameplay is minimalistic inspired by when the two founders (John and Gupta) were both going through heart break in college. I know its weird, they always seem to do things together.
As Cain, you traverse through a broken world and survive through the mechanical monstrosities that have managed to survive in this strange microcosm... But don't worry, cue in MLBY, a strange mechanical butterfly sidekick, and you'll be ready to illuminate your way past beauty, perils, and adventure. By interacting with objects and the environment you can overcome your enemies as you piece together the remnants of the past. Lanterns will mark your progress through the eerie darkness.
If you guys are not be big fans of slow-paced relationship building stories...then don't play this game. JUST KIDDING!! There's still Knights Mode!! It is a fast-paced, hack-and-slash, procedurally generated dungeon crawler that provides more depth to MLBY and Cain's world.
WHY SHOULD YOU BE INTERESTED?
Are you new to games or know someone that is?Our playtesters from demo nights and PAX East ranged from experienced veteran gamers to I-am-here-because-of _____ . We found that although the game was easy to pick up, it was still difficult enough to challenge those who already knew how games worked (humble brag hehe). Friends and couples played together and had a lot of fun figuring out the next step as well. If you want to introduce someone to gaming while being there during their initial steps - this game will do the trick! ;)
Are you perhaps a streamer looking for something to stream?
While developing and playing NEN, we occasionally thought how funny and cool it would be if someone were to stream our game. We added a lot of hidden content and humor so that streamers and non-streamers alike would get a chuckle or giggle out of it.
Do you like the smell of adventure with sprinkles of fond trolling?
*SNIFF*Aaaaah do you ya smell that lads? Must be sarcasm and lots of it! Going on a journey with two sarcastic friends, what could happen? And for those who know a lot about games, and maybe people who read a lot - We troll you ...gently. Right guys? Guys? It's only gentle trolling right? Guys?
Different modes for different kinds of gameplay.
Story mode - relationships, dialogue, puzzles.
Knight's mode - hack 'n slash, dungeon crawler, scores. Boom.
For more information follow the steps below:
Step 1: Lift Finger
Step 2: Scroll Down
Music + Atmosphere = You are now spirited away to the mountains with nothing on you but a lantern
The immersion is GREAT. (DotDream is not liable for immersion seeping into reality and the loss of clothes.)
In Story Mode, we wanted players to explore the relationship between two entities, with their own motives and confusion, that want to be friends but find it hard to express themselves within the circumstances. We wanted to convey a small portion of the tensions and misgivings, as well as the beauty associated with the beginning and renewal of friendships through our characters, Cain & MLBY.
Where did we get the miraculous motivation to do this? Well ask the artist John and the programmer Gupta (oddly enough programmers also have emotions). After having their hearts torn away from them, yes we are romantics and no we are not exaggerating, they came up with these crazy enemies and character driven story line.
You first see the main character holding what seems to be a lantern and eventually find your partner in a cage. You both proceed onwards, into a broken yet beautiful world...
But it gets better and weirder. Your partner is a mechanical butterfly that goes by the name of MLBY and you seem to be mechanical as well. Both of you sense you have known each other before but can't seem to recall how. As you explore you will often find yourself in harm’s way - watch out for the Constructs! And what do you have in order to defend yourself? That's right, a seemingly useless piece of sh-... lantern.
Careful of the corpses (personally I like to keep one with me... They're sort of adorable and makes it less lonely, but that's just me)
On your journey you’ll encounter lamp posts that can give you some relief and help you make it through in one piece. Collect butterflies scattered throughout to power up these lanterns. Why yes, you will be sacrificing innocent butterflies to become all powerful. But hey, it’s a tough world out there.
I mean just look at some of the Constructs you’ll face
In the Never Ending Knight’s Mode (pun intended), you play as a knight that was once MLBY’s slave companion. The gameplay completely changes from using a lantern to a standard sword. There are many different awesome swords, braces, pauldrons, and helmets…. Some are unlockable from the story mode. All have to be bought from a merchant full of wisecracks or chests.
You might be wondering whats this was motivate by. Well, to be honest, it was just cause we wanted to. We just thought Hey itd be cool if we added procedural generation. But oh ho ho we were not expecting so much more work :O. Its alright we have something awesome to give to you guys now.
Some items have passives or actives (of badassery) attached to them. Here are just a few of them.
Knight’s Mode mode has perma death and is essentially a dungeon crawler to complement the dialogue-driven play-style of Story Mode.
Enjoy hacking and slicing those crazy Constructs through this mode while picking up extra story plots. It offers a different style of gameplay and is available from the beginning.
Music of Never Ending Night
The music was created by our phenomenal artists Matt FanChiang and David Carp. Check out their SoundClouds below:
Matt's Never Ending Night Theme
Matt's MLBY Theme
Matt's Floating Catacomb
Arp dB's Winter Corridor
Arp dB Boss Encounter
Arp dB Grimy city
They have differing styles, and so added different flavors where needed in the game. Matt is also personally directing all the sound effects for NEN. With the help of David and Seori Park, these three breathe life in to Never Ending Night.

- You guys - We want to know what our future players think and want to see from the game. With your input we can see this game achieve its maximum potential. Crowdfunding is amazing because it allows you the players to contribute your own twist on our ideas.
- Unity Pro - We would like to put this game on other platforms using the Unity Pro license, which utilizes a monthly subscription fee.
- Bank Account - Unfortunately we are broke and working off a college bank account right now. Without a minimum amount of money in the bank there is a fee we have to pay to have a legitimate joint account.
$85 Reward Update : It comes with a title for "Executive Producer"
For those who lend their support on Kickstarter we are giving our official NEN Rings, which come in three tiers:
Tier 1 - Miru "Companion"
Tier 2 - Rahui "Brother/Sister"
Tier 3 - Ultimate Rahui "Brooooooooo"
Some pictures of the rings for reference:
For anyone who is excited about the Knight's Kickstarter skin, this is what it looks like:
We reached our goal in 3 days!! Due to this success we decided to make our stretch goals backer based. This means that even donating one dollar will count towards getting these goals accomplished. We care more about our fans than we do about the money so thanks a lot guys!!

We are a group of aspiring college students who got together to make games we would want to play. We have overcome many obstacles to work on NEN, such as our team being scattered on two continents. The two founders, John Wang and Dhruv Gupta, started the team in high school and overcame what life threw at them to pursue their passion.
The success of this project would benefit us in various ways. The establishment of NEN would allow Michael to keep staying in the United States. And John and Gupta would love to be able to keep working with the current members on future projects as the full DotDream team. When Never Ending Night was greenlit on Steam, we all jumped with joy but knew that this was only the first step towards getting DotDream up and running. This Kickstarter is not only a great way to achieve our need for funds, but also receive feedback from you, our future valued player, and make this game as enjoyable as possible. :)
Risks and challenges
Never Ending Night is our first major game, and upon successful funding we expect a road that feels like soft satin gently brushing the bottom of our travel weary feet and fragrance of roses saturating the air--- yeaaahhhh probably not :(
This is our first Kickstarter project, and we expect to encounter some of the difficulties listed below:
1. Reward delays
Although the game itself will not be delayed, rewards such as the rings and cards might be delayed if we encounter problems with shipping. However, we have amassed as much information and theoretical calculations to try and prevent any mishaps but hope you will understand if there are any. In any event, we will be reachable at our email (firstname.lastname@example.org), Kickstarter, and Facebook.
2. Unforeseen bugs
We've been testing for any bugs during the game's continued development and have fixed many of them. We recognize the high likelihood that players may find more that we have yet to encounter and will work in the months following the game's release to squash as many as we can.
Overall, we are a fairly new company of college students and we have poured many, many hours and our passions into the making of this game. The game has evolved as much as we have evolved as individuals and as a team and we hope that you find the game and its characters, art, and design enjoyable and expect more from us in the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
