THE CANCER CONFLICT
My name is Tom Meadmore, I am an Australian independent filmmaker based in London. For the last 18 months, I have been following two people as they battle cancer in very different ways.
Grant Branton is a 53 year old film producer, bike rider and rugby nut. He's been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is hitting it with conventional medicine.
Surinder Paul, 51, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Surinder has always been anti-medication. She’s never even taken a painkiller for a headache. She's fighting it with diet, lifestyle, and alternative treatments.
This documentary follows their experiences, and throws up fascinating questions about whether the options for cancer treatment we are normally presented with give us the best possible chance of survival - in the country with the lowest cancer survival rate in Western Europe.
My aim here is not to take sides, but by exploring these stories and interviewing experts in both camps I want to get a discussion started about what works, what doesn't and how the culture can evolve and allow people to make up their own minds.
At some point in our lives cancer will affect us all, so isn't this an essential conversation we should be having? Especially during a time where there are many documentaries on the subject, but very few that take a balanced un-biased approach.
WHAT ARE WE RAISING MONEY FOR?
I have put over £18,000 of my own money into making this documentary, and all principal filming has now been completed. I’ve followed Grant and Surinder’s experiences in depth for over a year, and everything has been shot on state of the art high definition cameras, which gives their stories the filmic quality they deserve.
But financially I’m tapped out, and now I need to raise money in order to complete the film. This will involve covering the costs of editing, music, graphics, archive and final post production to make it broadcast and distribution ready - all crucial steps to getting the message of the film in front of large audiences.
To achieve all of this, I'm looking to raise upwards of £40,000.
Raising money through crowd-funding allows me to make the film without any outside influences. I want this documentary to question everyone and everything with absolute journalistic integrity, with all voices heard.
Crowd-funding is unique in its ability to allow that to happen. I can present the facts as I have found them, without prejudice, and Grant and Surinder have the opportunity to have their stories told, their way.
Telling an objective story is very important to me.
WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO?
The Edit - with 18 months of footage of Surinder, Grant and expert interviews, pulling this together will be complex. The edit is scheduled to take 12 weeks.
Cinematographers - to allow for any additional filming of experts to answer questions that become relevant as the edit comes together.
Archive - news footage and newspaper articles to help highlight issues and the discussions relevant to the film. This can be time consuming to research and copyright clearance can be costly.
Research - to ensure our information is up to date and to check facts as the edit progresses, to guarantee its accuracy.
Music, Graphics, Colour Grade and Sound Mix - graphics to help explain complex issues raised and music to underpin the ups and downs of Grant and Surinder's emotional journeys. Sound mixing and colour grading are specialist processes necessary to prepare the film for distribution and broadcast.
Whatever money you can spare will be vital to the success of the film, and will be extremely gratefully received.
In addition, though – and even if you can’t afford to contribute – there is another important way in which you can help. Spread the word.
I want to get this project in front of as many people as possible in order to reach our Kickstarter goal.

Tom has a successful career as a director, producer and editor. He lists the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery and Channel 4 among his many credits and his work on ‘The Amazing Race Australia’ helped win the team an Emmy in 2012.
This is Tom's second feature length documentary. His first, ‘How To Lose Jobs and Alienate Girlfriends’ played at festivals around the world and received four star critical acclaim from Total Film magazine.
I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a crack team of film makers who are just as passionate about this film as I am.

Nic has worked in factual television for more than 20 years. He has created over 50 hours of programming.
From popular formats such as Masterchef, River Cottage and Wife Swap to powerful documentaries such as the BAFTA winning ‘My Childhood’ and the highly acclaimed BAFTA shortlisted series ‘Through a Child’s Eyes’, Nic has built an excellent reputation as a producer, director, series producer and executive producer working for all the major UK networks.
AVI FEDEGREEN/EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
Avi Federgreen’s over 20 years of experience in the Canadian
film industry feature many highlights, from music videos to TV series to full-length feature films.
Avi's current releases include ‘Prisoner X’, ‘How To Plan An Orgy In A Small Town’, ‘The Cocksure Lads Movie’, ‘Relative Happiness’ and ‘Porch Stories’.
In November 2011, Federgreen opened his own film distribution company INDIECAN ENTERTAINMENT.
LESLEY THOMAS (MUM)/SOCIAL MEDIA & CROWDFUNDING CO-ORDINATOR
For more than twelve years, Lesley has worked in Education Advertising Sales as a highly successful sales consultant. Lesley has been with Fairfax Media Australia for nine of those years winning many 'Sales Achievements' awards including the top 'Excellence in Advertising Sales' OSPer Award Australia wide in 2012
In addition, she has over ten years experience working with women in twelve step recovery and the disease of addiction.
Risks and challenges
With filming complete, most of the biggest obstacles to the successful completion of the project are behind us.
However there is a small possibility that more funding will be needed to complete the film.
This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as editing taking longer than anticipated or unforeseen developments in the cancer world requiring more filming.
This would hold up our completion date but would not keep us from completing the project. No matter what, with the money we raise here we will have a strong rough-cut version to show investors and distributors which will help us secure any additional necessary funds.
A balanced and fair approach to this subject is at the heart of our ambition. We are aiming to include all relevant voices in the discussion, but we are constrained in this by the limits of a 90 minute running time. It may not be possible for every angle to be presented in a way that pleases everyone.
