About this project
In The Morning is about love and its inevitable change/decline. It charts the emotional anatomy of several relationships over the course of one day. Permutations of passion, sorrow, joy and brutal honesty fuel the lives of a group of inter-connected New Yorkers. Friends: Harper, Ravi, Fez, Bly and Amara, gather to bid farewell to one of their own moving abroad, and debate the compromise and loss of their youthful ideals about marriage, fidelity, life and love. Two lovers: Malik and Cadence, meet to ceremoniously end a whirlwind romance that has collapsed under the weight of fears, obligations and regrets. A couple: Zuri and Leal, sift through the remains of their broken relationship as they try to make a life altering decision, journeying through the bitter heartbreak that comes with faded love, disintegrated trust, and dreams abandoned. For everyone, life will be indelibly altered in the morning.
Simply stated, In The Morning is about love and transitions. It examines the complexities of love from the perspective of three women in the midst of some hard won self-transformation. It’s a mood piece that weaves together three stories about personal growth and the power of choice and action.
As a filmmaker, and as a lover of films, I’ve always been attracted to intimate stories, films with an incredibly rich emotional life. I’m infinitely fascinated by the landscape of the human heart, and mind. I seek to create, and long to see films with complex, layered characters that take me on journeys. In The Morning is about something universal, something we’ve all wrestled with, sometimes won and sometimes lost, this terrible/beautiful animal: love. It explores the ever-changing nature of romantic love, but it’s ultimately about the profound power of self-love, self-actualization. My hope is that In The Morning will spark conversations about those beautiful moments in our lives and loves where we are required to be brave.
I am thrilled to have a creative partnership with a filmmaker I greatly admire, Arthur Jafa, who is lending his immeasurable talents to In The Morning as both Cinematographer and Producer.
Jafa, noted for his cinematography on films such as Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust’ (1992), Spike Lee’s ‘Crooklyn’ (1994), Ada Gay Griffin and Michelle Parkerson’s ‘Audre Lorde: A Litany for Survival (1995), and John Akomfrah’s ‘Seven Songs for Malcolm X’ (1993), has remained singularly committed to the proposition that a Black cinema “as rich in power, beauty and alienation as black music” is not only possible but the ultimate goal and inevitable outcome of any sustained “free black association” with cinema. Along with partner Malik Sayeed, Jafa has formed TNEG™, (see deshotten 1.0: > http://www.myspace.com/anamibia/videos >) a company committed to developing the necessary apparatus (technological, financial, methodological, analytical, aesthetic) with which to realize a black cinema as “central to the 21st century as was black music to the 20th century.”
A message from Arthur Jafa about the film:
For me, In The Morning is about those moments in life when the split, between what you know and what you feel, is, fundamentally, irreconcilable. And if one takes this most human of experiences, and places it in the context of the “perpetual post trauma” that defines black life, one has now entered a very specific corner of heaven and hell. It’s a space that artists like Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday and Al Green have rendered so powerfully. And yet, it’s a space we’ve seldom if ever seen authentically portrayed in black cinema, a space of deepest, blackest feelings.
It was obvious, after reading the script, and from my first conversations with Nefertite, that In The Morning offered an ideal opportunity to implement many of the expressive and formal techniques I’ve had under development since as far back as “Daughters of the Dust.” My goal is to produce a film that not only moves viewers (in both familiar and novel ways), but that announces the emergence of the kind of cinema I think we all, deep down, long for.
Now, more than ever, we need to see images that authentically represent the breath, depth, and scope of the lives of people of color. Hollywood has a very narrow vision and version of what those stories should be. It really is up to us to change this dynamic and create the films we want to see. In The Morning illuminates an underrepresented facet of African American life and presents thoughtful, complex, three-dimensional characters. My collaborators and I are committed to moving beyond the conversation and into action-- creating art that defies stereotypes, pushes artistic boundaries, and leads by example. But we cannot do it without you. We need your support to make this vision a reality. Each donation will go straight to the production of our film and every bit, large or small, will make an enormous difference. The more funds we raise, the more resources we’ll have access to. Every cent (minus the minor fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to the “In The Morning” film budget - i.e. Your money goes directly to the funding of this film and will help us do everything from rent equipment to feed our cast and crew!
All incentives, large and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, some of the gifts will happen immediately. The t-shirt with an image from the film will be manufactured after we shoot in November.
