CliffsNote version of our story:
Our mission is to GIVE people the freedom to doodle anytime and anywhere! With our AMAZING erasable book bag, that comes with a FREE set of 8 color chalk markers you can be creative, be unique, and be you! The book bag is their new badge of cool. As a member of Boys & Girls Club of Stanislaus, Hien wants to give back 5% of sale to BGC of Stanislaus where great futures start.
How it all began:
When a 11-year old boy named Hien Ho & his father were watching skateboarders shredding it at a local skate park, he noticed that some skateboarders had canvas backpacks with fabulous design doodled on them with permanent marker. He said to his dad: "Dad, wouldn't it be cool if these backpacks are erasable so that they can doodle new design whenever they want to?" It was the question that sparked the idea. When they got home, Hien & his father searched online to see if there was such a backpack on the market. They could not find one. So, they started thinking about how to create one. Hien and his dad experimented with various material to create an erasable book bag. After some trials & errors, they found a simple solution: PVC plastic. Hien's father had some experience & training in business. So, he started looking for manufacturers in the US and overseas to make some prototypes. There was not any bag manufacturer in the US. So, they looked overseas to find factories to make erasable book bags for them. There are 2 essential components that make this erasable book bag super cool:
The smooth nonporous surface (PVC) on the book bag. The non-toxic water soluble & erasable chalk markers. They also had to look for another manufacturer that makes such chalk markers. Again, they had to look overseas for suppliers of chalk markers. They found one and worked with this them to make sure that the markers are indeed non-toxic because most of the users are going to be young children.

THIS IS WHAT OUR KIND BACKERS WILL GET FOR SUPPORTING OUR CAMPAIGN. (DIFFERENT COLORS AVAILABLE)
With some seed money from awesome grandma, Hien and his father started a company called ChalkWild. After ordering some book bags & markers to test, the ChalkWild team ordered a small first batch of book bags & chalk markers to test the market. The feedbacks & comments from the kids and parents were overwhelmingly positive. Kids who love to doodle fell in love with their book bags because they can customize it to anything they feel like that day or week. If they don't like it, they can always change it. That's the beauty of it. Parents love it because their kids have the freedom to doodle their art on it anytime & anywhere they want. Some parents even wrote a "I love you" note for their children at night so that their children will see them in the morning. Teachers love them because they can write a note to the parents on the backpacks to remind them to look inside for notes from teachers or schools. After asking for feedbacks and listening to what features customers and potential customers want to add to the book bag, ChalkWild team implemented these changes and designed a larger, more durable (canvas material), and user-friendly book bag. The new features include sleeves for laptop and tablet, pens & smart phone holder, and a 8 inches wide zippered opening on the PVC surface where users can store tablet, smartphone... for easy access or can insert a picture on paper or tablet to trace. For folks who are creative but having limited talent, tracing a picture to express their creativity is not cheating. The ability to stand out, to be remarkable, to be you is what's cool about this erasable book bag. There is no one else in the world with the exact same design or drawing on your bag like you. That makes you UNIQUE.
This new model is also suitable for college students and young professional freelancers or independent contractors like real estate agent. It works as their own Walking Billboard. For example, a realtor can combine some creativity with tidbits of information like today's mortgage rate, current median home price, inventory, current listings, just sold... on the bag. It is their name tag on steroid. It sure will get some curiosity from people & is a great conversation starter.
ChalkWild also wants to give back to the community. Since Hien is a member of Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus, grandma, father, & Hien agreed to give 5% of each sale to Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus to support programs that help kids become amazing and have great futures. Since the inception of this erasable book bag, Hien & ChalkWild have been in the Modesto Bee & on the Good Day Sacramento. A sitting US Congressman & President Barack Obama both sent letters to congratulate Hien on his venture and cool missions. Recently, ChalkWild book bag has been featured in CBS LA and Fox5 San Diego. Hien has his own erasable book bag to doodle freely now. He is so happy as the Head Doodler of ChalkWild.

Risks and challenges
We have a great product. Feedbacks we got from parents and kids are overwhelmingly positive. The problem we have is marketing and PR. A great product that no one knows about will not be successful. We hire a PR firm, Blue Eyed Entertainment BEE, that has great connection to media outlets to help us. BEE has helped launched many successful Kickstarter campaigns. We feel we are in good hands.
Patent is another issue we have. We spent money speaking with a patent attorney. The answer was: "it costs about $15,000 to file for a patent but it won't be well protected." We decided that we would rather spend the money on marketing and PR with a narrative that it was invented by a kid who would like other kids to have the ability to create art on the go with their backpacks to express themselves, to be themselves, to stand out, and to have it as their badge of cool and would like to give back to his Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus 5% of each sale. We believe the narrative and the product will hit the right note with customers. If another company come out with the same product, our sale probably won't be affected much.
Supply chain risk. It has happened to us. Our original manufacturer lost the only employee who can speak, read, and write English. We communicated only with that person until she got another job. After many email attempts to communicate, our contact finally replied that she is no longer there and there is no one there who can speak English. So, we asked her for a referral. Today, we are working with this new manufacturer to make prototype for us. We are happy with this new relationship but we are also mindful of the same issue. A few months ago, when we were in Vietnam, we found another manufacturer who is well qualified to product backpacks for us if need be. The price and quality are similar.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
