What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

New Design Features:

  • Adapted the case to accommodate filament sizes (1.75, 2.85 & 3 mm) and spool sizes of inner; from 5/8" (16mm) to 2-1/8" (54mm) and outer diameters; up to 8" (203mm), it should hold almost any standard filament spool.
  • Added self adhesive fiber backing to help keep the spool from moving while in use.
  • Tested every case for improved tab strength.
  • Replaced the hardware used to hold the spool with a wingnut, which makes it very easy to replace the filament spool and requires no tools.
  • Desiccant now included in each case, which fits in the upper part of the spool holder, to absorb moisture.
  • Proper placement of the filament tube, creates a heated air flow, which protects the filament from humidity.
  • Strengthened the spool holder with proper placement of nuts, bolts, and washers by using a jig for drilling.

Case:

3-1/8” (79mm) thick x 8.5” (216mm) wide or tall: With a few more assembled, we are validating the adaptability to standard filament spools that fit in an area of 3-1/8” (79mm) thick x 8.5” (216mm) wide or tall. With the latest design, we have tested 15 different spools of all filament sizes (1.75, 2.85 & 3 mm) filament sizes and spool sizes of inner; from 5/8" (16mm) to 2-1/8" (54mm) and outer diameters; up to 8" (203mm), it should hold almost any filament spool.  

Concept:

Out of frustration, I spent hours trying to figure out how to protect my expensive carbon fiber ABS, PLA and HIPS filament from humidity and shop dust.  Initially I thought to store it in the bag it came in, although that meant always taking the time and added steps of returning it to the bag after each use.  Plus I tried larger, resealable bags but it never looked that good, nor did it really protect the filament.  After several unsuccessful attempts to encase the filament spool, it dawned on me to design it so it will work when being used in any position.  Several revisions later, I have designed a filament case which will print in any position and can also be moved while printing, if needed and can be weighed at anytime and throughout the printing process.  If you simply subtract or tare weight the case and spool weight, you could be within 1 gram of material.  I added an out of filament sensor to my printer and with the case system and the earlier mentioned feature to a printer, your successful printing rate could be tenfold.  I have been so pleased with this storage case that I just had to share and offer it to others!  Added bonuses: the case holds a silica gel desiccant moisture absorbing dry box; the case is designed so you can wind and load an empty spool if needed; ability to weigh the spool during printing; plus when the filament tube is removed and inserted back into the case, it adds a slight tension which stops the spool from turning when not in use.  The $1000 fund raising is to take the prototype to production; with jigs for drilling, countersinking, inventory of hard to find specialty hardware, nuts, and bolts, plus shipping preparations. I quickly realized that I could use more than one case and figured others would too.  I went through several revisions to reduce costs, without sacrificing the overall concept of the design and especially the appearance.

Shipping:

As the item weight for one (1) case is just under the cost effective shipping weight, it gets very expensive to ship two (2) or more cases outside of the United States.  Although if you let me know, we can determine the shipping costs to your country and I can create a listing with a specific number of cases for that region.

Risks and challenges

I foresee no risks or challenges with completing the project. The prototypes are up and running successfully and I will be working hard throughout the campaign to prepare for production and fulfillment.
