Listen to Kimiko Ishizaka on IMSLP / Petrucci Music Library

There are many venues for public domain or Creative Commons licensed music to be shared. One of the largest sites is our partner, the IMSLP / Petrucci Music Library. They just hit two important milestones; 35,000 musical works now have scores or parts on the website, and they were featured in a New York Times article "Free Trove of Music Scores on Web Hits Sensitive Copyright Note". It is only natural that Kimiko Ishizaka's recording of the Goldberg Variations will be donated to the IMSLP.

You can already hear some of Kimiko's playing on IMSLP. Three pieces which were recorded live in 2008 are there now on Kimiko's IMSLP artist page. I've attached the MP3 files to this post as well, for your enjoyment and convenience.

Eventually sites like IMSLP will be comprehensive and complete, to the point that one won't need to buy a recording in order to hear a good performance of a piece. This is a good thing for humanity, and for the arts. The study and cultivation of the classical music culture is already very expensive, and IMSLP significantly lowers the cost of discovering music. The easy availability of music will also lead to a wider and more diverse living repertoire, where performers actively study and perform more than just the "greatest hits" masterpieces. In all, contributing to the IMSLP is a great thing to do, and it directly increases the public good.
