A lot has changed since we first launched Dungeon Dice. Many of the changes are based on feedback from backers. In fact, I believe we've addressed every concern brought up so far.
The dice are now injection molded, which means the images will be recessed, not printed on. The price has been reduced significantly and our minimum goal has been lowered, which we've been able to accomplish by starting as a 3-player game. However, we have already unlocked the 4-player stretch goal! Each game will now have enough dice for four players, with the option to buy a booster pack for five-player games. We're including extra dice that backers earned in the first project. Stretch goals are now available to everyone who buys the main game. We're disclosing all information on costs, because we want you to trust us. We are not a big company, and we are grateful for the opportunity Kickstarter offers to help us realize a small dream.
We look forward to your feedback.
You love dice. This game has dice. All sorts, really. Weapon dice, potion dice, and monster dice. We've even got some secret magical artifact dice. They're locked up tight though. You'll need some key dice to get your mitts on them.
The good news? Keys are not particularly well-guarded.
The bad news? Your friends are well-armed and grabbing up every treasure they see.
Still don't get it? Close your eyes and picture reaching into a dice bag to pull out a random treasure. If this does not interest you, you are excused. I hear that Kickstarter has some wonderful card games that might be up your alley.
To all else, welcome to happiness.
The king of Elorim has been killed. No surprise, really. The kingdom is overrun by monsters. Fortunately for you, this means there is a vacant throne.
The previous king was eaten, and the king before him was burnt to a crisp. The people have unanimously decided that the next king must know how to hold a sword.
This is where you come in. You may be a bit green, but you did stab a slime once that was creeping into your kitchen. You might have a chance to prove yourself.
Unfortunately, every half-wit, braggart, and two-bit warrior in the kingdom has the same idea. If you are to prove yourself in battle, you will have to do it before anyone else or *cough cough* die trying.
We've chosen Kickstarter for a few reasons. First, producing custom dice is expensive. And we have over 90 dice per game! For such a small company, this is simply not possible without a little Kickstart.
Due to some confusion on the prices, I've tried to reword this section for clarity. Starting at our base goal of $16,000 we will only need an additional $10,000 to make the game (which we can comfortably manage). However, due to increased costs as we gain backers, reach stretch goals, and cover your shipping costs (this is substantial) we will not begin to make PROFIT until we reach $60,000. Roughly.
We are not worried about this, because the game will sell. Our first priority is to support our backers. If anything, we may do that a little too well.
If we get enough funding, we will include even more dice. The more money we get, the more quality we can pump into this game. That's right. The more people who pledge to this project, the more stuff YOU get. No catch.
So tell your friends. Kickstarter is a wonderful forum to get the word out to as many people as possible.
Lastly, we have seen the audience and enthusiasm for classic dungeon games on Kickstarter. Happily, this is our passion, and we are eager to spread the love!
You get the following stuff:

To begin playing, each player grabs one Hero Level die.
Next, each player randomly grabs two pieces of equipment from the treasure bag. Here's an example of five possible items: an axe, a whip, a hammer, a spear, and armor. Each symbol has it's own effect in the game. For example, the whip "tangles" the enemy and their lowest die is removed from play. All of the individual effects are explained below in the FAQ section.
Player 1 randomly pulls one die from the monster bag and rolls. Here we have the zombie die. You may fight a level one zombie, a level two zombie, or a level three zombie. The level three zombie has the "drain" icon, which means it takes your lowest die and adds it to its own total.
Let's say you roll a level two zombie. Since it is level two, you will roll two Monster Level Dice...
You roll all of your dice and compare to the monster's total. Whoever's total is higher wins.
If you win, you gain the potion pictured on one side of the die. Go ahead and reach into the potion bag and grab a random die. The potion bag contains one-use items, such as healing potions, strength potions, scrolls, bombs, and keys.
Each monster has different abilities and different rewards. The rewards are potions, treasures, and locked chests, which contain artifacts. If you happen to find a locked chest AND you have a key, happiness ensues.
Since you want to see more monsters, we'll include a few more for you. Here we have the Asp, Giant Spider, Golem, and Witch. Notice that the level two Witch may cast one spell, while the level four Witch may cast two. The basic set has three spell dice to choose from.
For a more detailed explanation of the rules, see the FAQ below.
Thanks to backers, the monster set is now complete. We have added enough dice for four players and now we're focusing on adding variety to spells, equipment, and artifacts.
Due to the stretch goals we've reached, the game currently includes 17 unique monster dice! Here they are:
In the initial set we have the Bat, Slime, Zombie, Asp, Giant Spider, Wolf, Goblin, Skeleton, Ghost, Golem, Fire Elemental, Witch, Demon, Dragon, Cockatrice, Harpy and an Unguarded Treasure die.
In addition, we introduce the following stretch goals.
Congratulations! We will now add the Asp to each game. The Asp is a level 1-3 monster with the ability to tangle your lowest die, removing it from the game.
At $20,000 we will add the Goblin to each game. The Goblin is a level 1-3 monster with the ability to reroll one die. The Goblin is the weakest creature in possession of treasure.
At $22,000 we will add the Wolf to each game. The Wolf is a level 2-4 monster with no abilities. The Wolf is the highest level creature in possession of a potion.
At $24,000 we will add the Slime to each game. The Slime is a level 1-3 monster. Slimes are edible, and defeating a slime heals one wound.
At $26,000 we will add the Ghost to each game. The Ghost is a level 2-4 monster. A player who defeats a ghost takes one wound for the ordeal.
At $28,000 we will add the Spider to each game. The Spider is a level 1-2 monster. However, with the ability to tangle your lowest die and then drain the next highest, it proves to be more difficult than it looks.
At $30,000 we will add the Fire Elemental to each game. The Fire Elemental is a level 2-4 monster with the ability to add a flame spell to its combat roll.
At $32,000 we will add the Dragon to each game. The Dragon is a level 3-5 monster and the only creature to offer up to 3 Fame points. The Dragon adds a flame spell to its combat roll, and may force a reroll of the entire combat when losing.
Enough dice will be included for four players. This includes 3 additional Hero Level dice, 3 additional equipment dice, 2 extra one-use dice, and 1 extra experience tracker. These dice have already been added to the total.
What do the all the different symbols mean?
Below is a brief explanation of each symbol. For in-depth explanations, please see the symbols section in the complete rules here.
What are the different monsters?
Have you planned any more dice than are pictured here?
Currently, we have planned three expansions to the game. Official playtesting has not yet been scheduled for any of the expansions. We are offering rewards for those of you interested in taking part.
EPIC BOSSES - These extremely powerful monsters will come on jumbo dice. All players have a chance to gang up and attempt to kill them. The expansion will include a few new symbols and equipment using those symbols.
DUNGEONS - The dungeon expansion introduces static dice with global effects. The set includes specific locations, weather effects, traps, and secret passages. We'll even throw a Mimic into the treasure bag. It makes grabbing treasure a little scarier.
CLASSES AND RACES - This expansion introduces dice representing classic classes and races. A few of these dice have been play-tested with the original set. For example, the thief die has a chance to pick locks and may even find additional treasure after a fight.
Where's my free download?
For those of you who want to play cheaply, we offer a print-at-home version of the game here. This file is intended to be printed on a large sticker label (the sort used for shipping), and then cut and applied to blank 16mm dice. As a two-man project, assembly may take a couple hours.
This version is designed for 2-Players. We've throwing in the monsters from stretch goals because we can. Enjoy.
Not interested? That's fine. We've included the option because we believe that many of you will appreciate it.
Below are two shots of the printable version applied to blank dice.
To save you time, we're also including a card version of the game, which is easier to print. The rules are the same, except you roll a standard die to determine the effect of each card.
You can download it here. Below is a picture of the card version.
Could you explain the rules in more detail?
You can view the official rules here. Or you may read the summary below.
Players are in a race to gain Fame and claim the throne. The first player to obtain 4 Fame wins the game. Fame is earned by defeating high level monsters and by obtaining magical artifacts. Artifacts award one Fame point. Red monsters award 1 Fame point. Black monsters award 2 Fame points. The Gold Dragon awards 3 Fame points.
Pre-game, each player grabs one Level die and two random Treasure dice. Players may only equip two arms worth of weapons and one piece of armor. Other dice may be used without restriction. Dice from the potion bag may only be rolled once, and are then returned to the bag. This includes potions, curses on other players, and keys, among other things.
Players take turns grabbing a random monster from the monster bag. That player has 'found' a monster and he may choose whether or not to confront it. Before he decides, he may invite one other player to join him in the fight.
Each monster icon also depicts a number. This is the monster's level. Once combat begins, roll a number of Monster Level dice equal to the monster's total. This represents the monster's total strength.
Once the active player enters combat, there is no escape. Either the hero rolls higher than the monster and gets items and experience, or rolls lower than the monster and takes a wound. Helpers automatically get experience, and may also receive items in exchange for their service.
All players in a combat roll their dice and compare to the monster's total. Secondly, all abilities are played. In general, armor is played first, and then the active player decides the order of remaining abilities. If the monsters are required to make a decision, the first player to the active player's left (who is not in combat) makes decisions for the monster. For example, the active player could not choose to have a monster reroll a combat that it is already winning.
Monster abilities affect only the active player, not their helpers in combat. For example, if two players defeat a slime together, only the active player recovers a wound.
Dice may be traded at any time. However, equipment may not be changed during combat. When two heroes feel they have equal claim on a treasure, they may roll off. For example, Player 1 finds a locked treasure and Player 2 has a key. They may agree to roll a die with equal chances. On the other hand, Player 2 might only agree to help if he has a 2 in 3 chance of receiving the treasure. If Player 1 agrees, they roll a die and agree who wins on each number (1-3, 1-4, etc.). Roll-offs play a key roll in bartering.
When a player reaches 3 experience, he gains a second Level die. At six experience, he may gain a third Level die and gain 1 Fame. When a character loses a fight and takes a wound, he temporarily loses 1 Level die. This may be replaced by consuming a healing potion, or by resting. If a player chooses to rest, he may skip his turn in order to regain one lost Level die.
If a monster awarding Fame is slain, the active player keeps that die as a trophy. Like all other dice, these trophies may be traded and bartered for any reason.
Please feel free to contact us with questions or clarifications, and we will update the FAQ.
How many people can play?
The game is for 2-4 players. Currently, you may upgrade your game to include enough dice for five players (see Add-Ons).
How long does a game last?
Games usually last about twenty minutes. A long game could make it up to forty. If you find that your games last longer than you want, you may simply decide to play for fewer Fame points, and the games will be shorter.
What size and quality will the dice be?
The dice will be injection molded at multiple sizes. They will look nice. The monster dice are 18mm, the one-use dice are 14mm, and the rest are 16mm. This allows for easy sorting, and reference.
The Epic Dice in a future expansion will be 22mm, with an 18mm "randomizer" die that goes in the monster bag.
Risks and challenges
We are coordinating between multiple companies to produce all of the parts for Dungeon Dice. While we are dealing with professionals, we are subject to unexpected delays, changes in costs, and shipping. Small changes are assumed and calculated for, and we do not anticipate any problems. In fact, we will likely be able to deliver the finished product earlier than promised, but we prefer to leave a margin for error.
Shipping times may vary, depending on the total number of orders. Again, we have calculated a comfortable margin to deal with such a demand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
