About this project
Update 1/4/2016-- Stretch goal #2 has been unlocked!
Well, we just passed 30K and here's what I'm thinking; I've gotten a lot of inquiries on all three of these campaigns about including something a bit bigger and more involved sculpture-wise, than the magnets. So, what I'm gonna do here for the second stretch goal, is offer a small scale, fully three dimensional maquette, as an ADD-ON for 45 dollars.
This will ship separately, right after the campaign is over, so you'll get it pretty much immediately. To add one of these to your pledge, simply follow these three easy steps;
1) Click the "manage your pledge" button right here on the page.
2) Increase your pledge by (not to) 50 dollars if you're in the US, or 62 dollars foreign (this includes shipping!) to claim the add on.
3) Save your pledge. Do not change the tier that you originally pledged at. I will see this on your backer report and automatically know that you want the add on. It's that easy!
When the campaign is over, I'll send out the survey and those of you who added on the maquette can choose which one you'd like, and it ships out to you right away! Thanks to everyone again for getting it this far. It's been such a gift. If we hit 40K I'll unlock another stretch goal!
Update 12/30/2015-- The first stretch goal has been unlocked!
As I always like to do with these books, the first stretch goal for the 25K mark is always a high quality 8x10 signed, limited edition print. In keeping with the black paper drawing theme, here is the print that you'll all get absolutely free with your book! The second stretch goal, which will be unlocked at 30K, will be a bit different this time around... I think you'll all dig it! Stay tuned, and thank you all for getting it this far!
Are we on VOLUME 3 already?
Yep. Time flies when you're having fun and making monsters! I've gotta tell you, my schedule these days is crazy, but I absolutely love collaborating with the truly great and pioneering artists in this industry. I truly believe that part of being a professional in any field, is to give something back and pass on to the next generation what you have learned from those kind enough to have shown you.
I still can't believe it, but not only the response, but the demand for these books, all over the world has been absolutely incredible. My inbox has been slammed since Volume 2 shipped, with inquiries about a third book. If you would have told me back when I Kickstarted the first one just about a year ago, that it would turn into a successful series and I'd have the best creature designers, sculptors and fantasy artists in the world, coming to me and asking to be included, I wouldn't have believed you.
But here we are, and this volume has the potential to be the biggest and best one yet! I have several artists that I've been after since the first book and I couldn't be happier to bring you their astounding art. Paul Komoda, Norman Cabrera and Andy Bergholtz are absolute masters of the craft and the rest of the featured artists are ALL equally wonderful and brilliant in their chosen disciplines.
Rounding out the stellar lineup for this volume are; Peter Konig, David Meng, Allen Williams, Jason Monkman, Fancagne Didier, Cyril Roquelaine, and the morbid, yet astoundingly beautiful dark art of Chet Zar. All tied together of course, as usual by some art and musings by yours truly...
I am also extremely excited to finally include the first two women into this series! The absolutely stunning and mezmerizing work of Forest Rogers will be featured in all its alluring beauty. This lady's art is nothing short of exquisite. Forest is one of the most talented artists I've ever seen. Her impeccable style and aesthetic will simply take your breath away. Virginie Ropars will also be lending her amazing work to the book. The sheer brilliance of her design work and execution is impeccable. So stoked to have these two wonderful ladies on board!
There will also be a special section dedicated to the art of Ed Edmunds and Distortions Unlimited. This man was way ahead of his time. In the early 80's Ed's unique and original latex masks inspired an entire generation of young, up and coming creature designers and monster makers, including Steve Wang, Jordu Schell and myself.
So please join me and all the outstanding talent I have lined up for Volume 3 of The Art of Creature and Character Design. The book will be of the same design and quality you've all come to know and love in these books-- the exceptional high resolution imagery, the interesting in depth interviews with each featured artist, the stories, words of encouragement, inspiration and humor from yours truly and of course, what has become sort of the signature of these books, the velvet touch cover!
Missed out on the first two volumes?
Don't worry, there's a very limited reward tier, featuring all three books. Though the hardcover for Volume 1 is sold out and the softcover for Volume 2 is sold out as well, I do have a few of Volume 1 softcovers and Volume 2 hardcovers left, so if you don't mind the "mix and match" there's still an opportunity to own all three books. Digital downloads of all three volumes are also available for a special package deal.
Stay tuned for more news, imagery and stretch goals in this exciting third chapter in The Art of Creature and Character Design series. Thanks again for all your love and support on the first two books. It was truly a collaborative effort, that I couldn't have done without all my colleagues and most importantly, all of YOU.
Much love and much thanks,
Risks and challenges
A book is always a difficult undertaking. Good printing to do a book of this quality is not cheap, and it's a lot of work. I've had to wrangle the help of a lot of different artists, to contribute to the book. Shipping to foreign countries also presents challenges, but it simply comes down to whether backers outside the US are willing to pay extra for the shipping of the actual book. It makes it more expensive, and that's why I'm offering a digital download as well, for my foreign backers. Printing also has a tendency to run a bit behind schedule, especially to a perfectionist like me. In the event that situation arises, I will keep everyone appraised of the situation with constant updates, just like I did on my last two very successful KICKSTARTER campaigns for The Art of Creature and Character Design Volumes 1 and 2, where I kept everyone updated along the way and had a great time doing it. I'm hoping this campaign will be equally successful, and bring this awesome book to everyone who pledges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
