Wow... Stretch goal number two unlocked and now THIS; Doug Jones, the man behind the foam latex in so many of the creatures and characters we've come to know and love, will be writing a piece for the volume on how the design of the character affects his performance. I can't wait to read this myself!!!
Well, we've met the funding goal and beyond! This makes me truly happy. :). Hence, I'd like to announce the first STRETCH GOAL!
Firstly, I'd like to thank and wish all the artists who have contributed their talents to the book, and to all who have backed this project, a warm, happy holiday season and a prosperous 2015. Secondly, I'd like to officially announce the first stretch goal for this campaign: If the project reaches the 25,000 dollar mark, I will create a brand new, unique drawing of a creature (different from the one in the demonstration video) and send a signed and numbered print to everyone who backs the project. This will not be a cheap, flimsy, xerox copy. It will be professionally printed on thick, archival stock, and be limited ONLY to the number of backers on the project. The numbers will coincide with the backers. For example; if you were backer #1, you get print #1, 2nd backer gets #2, etc...
Thoughts? Ideas for more stretch goals??? I want to hear from you... Let's keep this interactive. Stretch goals will be made available to those who pledged only for the digital rewards, but you must pay for shipping. It's not required that you accept the stretch goals, but if you'd like them, a shipping cost will be provided later, depending on how many are unlocked.
The Art of Creature and Character Design, is a project I have been wanting to do for quite some time now. It's a very informative, comprehensive, lavishly illustrated volume on the art and aesthetics of creature and character design for film, video games and toys. It will explore the style, approach, technique, and inspiration of some of the best creature and character designers in the world.
It will feature a lot of my own work, but I was fortunate enough to talk some of my talented friends and colleagues that I've worked on many films with, or have been fortunate enough to befriend over the past 25 years of traveling through the industry, into contributing some of their work as well. Guys behind some of the most iconic and recognizable creatures in film, television, video games, and toys over the past few decades. These phenomenal, award winning artists have helped make this volume the first book of it's kind. I hope start volume two in the upcoming year...
This 100+ page book will be available in three formats; A digital, downloadable version, a softcover and a hard bound edition. Each printed copy will be signed by me, and I will try to wrangle as many of these artists who are local, to sign it as well (maybe a stretch goal). I will also do a sketch on the inside opening page, if you like. See all the different reward tiers to the right, for the specifics.
The coolest thing about this book, is how different and varied the styles and design sensibilities are, of all the different artists who contributed to the book; Myself, Jordu Schell, Steve Wang, Eddie Yang, Joel Harlow, Brandt Peters, Bryan Wynia, William Basso, Aris Kolokontes, Dominic Qwek, Jonathan Fuller, Lee Joyner and Michael Broom. I've also included some collaborations I've done with other artists like Patrick Magee and Damon Bard, to name a few. I always found it interesting how other sculptors and artists, rendered my designs. Sometimes, it makes for some truly staggering results. There's literally too much art crammed into this book, it's impossible to describe. You'll just have to get one to see!
Every technique from traditional drawing and clay sculpture, to some of the truly amazing computer generated, digital art by some of these guys, will be featured and everything in between.
I'm also offering a 20+ minute video of me, doing a creature design demonstration, with pencil, pens and marker on toned paper, that will be available with the digital download, and also made available to people who wish to pledge for a printed copy of the book. This will be an unedited video, showing exactly how I achieve a design sketch in my style.
I've had an absolute blast writing this book and putting it together. I hope it makes a great addition to your monster, creature, and special makeup effects, bookshelf!
Risks and challenges
A book is always a risky and arduous undertaking. Good printing to do a book of this quality is not cheap, and it's a lot of work. I've had to wrangle the help of a lot of different artists, to contribute to the book. Shipping to foreign countries also presents challenges, but it simply comes down to whether backers outside the US are willing to pay extra for the shipping of the actual book. It makes it more expensive, and that's why I'm offering a digital download as well, for my foreign backers. Printing also has a tendency to run a bit behind schedule, especially to a perfectionist like me. In the event that situation arises, I will keep everyone appraised of the situation with constant updates, just like I did on my last very successful KICKSTARTER campaign, where everything was delivered, as I kept everyone updated along the way and had a great time doing it. I'm hoping this campaign will be equally successful, and bring this awesome book to everyone who pledges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
