About this project
VIDEO UPDATE 8/16-- here's the requested articulation video of the figure. Please watch the whole thing. I'm adding a removable loincloth and articulating the wrists as well.
From the dark depths of the imagination of renowned Hollywood creature designer and filmmaker Sandy Collora, comes a lost tribe of reptilian prehistoric sea creatures called the Tiburonera-- the SHARK HUNTERS!!!
Back in the age of the dinosaurs, giant prehistoric sea turtles, called ARCHELONS gathered in huge groups and hibernated in warm, hydrothermal vents in the deepest trenches of the ocean to avoid the meteors that destroyed the land and wiped out the dinosaurs.
Most of them survived and over time, slowly evolved into anthropomorphic sea turtles and crawled out of the sea onto the flourishing landscape to develop and thrive in the wake of all the destruction. Surviving in small tribes in the far corners of the globe, they have become sentient and developed a tribal lifestyle, searching the depths in an effort to find others of their kind and establish total dominance over the seas of the new Earth.
These unique and fascinating creatures were recently featured in a critically acclaimed short film called "Shallow Water", made earlier this year that was funded right here on Kickstarter! It is currently making the rounds on the festival circuit and being developed into a feature length film soon.
Making this film was a very challenging, but very rewarding experience. The response not only from the critics, but the fans, has been truly overwhelming. It's opened up a lot of doors and given me a platform to explore the possibilities of this new world and all the characters and creatures that inhabit it. The possibilities here are truly endless and SOULS of the ABYSS represents the very tip of the iceberg as to what is coming. I can see many different races of these creatures-- similar but all unique in their own ways.
Here, next to a Masters of the Universe Lizard Man and NECA's Big Red Predator and Thermal Vision Dutch, you can clearly see exactly how big these figures are...
The scale is basically your standard 6 inch action figure scale, the same as Mythic Legions. These figures are approximately 7.5 inches tall, depending on the way you position the head and the stance of the figure itself, but the actual monster-- and by that I mean the creature suits used in the film, varied from 6' 10" to 7' 5" on set, depending on the actor, so in the 6 inch scale size, you have figures that are 7 inches ++ tall. So, for lack of a better term, it's one inch to the foot.
Though one sculpture just like we did in the film for the creature suits, these aquatic, reptilian figures are available in 5 different color patterns to match the ones in the movie, plus a blank one, cast in either a light gray or off white, to create your own unique look! The head sculpture for the MONARCH however, is different to show the age and battle damage he's sustained over the millennia...
Many hours of work from myself as well as some of the best toy makers in the industry, have spared nothing when it comes to the level of accuracy and detail in the sculpts of these figures. The resin prototypes shown below are the result of my passion, dedication and talents to bring you the level of quality you've all come to know and love from my brand.
The first of these scaly, armored creatures are the DRONES-- moss green in color, a great army builder, the foot-- or should I say "fin" soldiers of the Shark Hunter army. Fierce fighters either bare clawed or with a variety of weapons, these are the grunts that make up the largest and most dangerous numbers of the tribe.
The SCOUT-- a rusty brown hue gives this special member of the tribe the ability to blend in seamlessly with the rocks along the shorelines of the Sea of Cortez, where this particular tribe of Tiburonera hunt for food or are always on the lookout for enemy tribes. Their keen eyesight and ability to camouflage themselves, makes them the perfect intel gathering creature, who can report back to the tribe, without being seen.
The TRACKER-- once a food source or warring tribe is discovered, the brilliant red colored tracker, leads the tribe to either war or teaming up with another tribe from another part of the vast ocean-- or of course, to feed.
The SHAMAN-- the healer and soothsayer of the tribe. The Tiburonera can live thousands of years because of the healing powers of this very special creature. Through all the battles with hostile tribes and hunting large prey, the warriors sustain deep wounds which are healed through the magic of the mystical Shaman.
The MONARCH-- the patriarchal leader of tribe, his once brilliant color faded to a bleached bone white, has his face scarred with the damage done by many an adversary over the millennia. Legend has it that he's ten thousand years old. The most respected, revered and wise member of the tribe.
The figures have 11 points of articulation, but here's the cool thing; though the sculpting and approach to the design of these action figures is very contemporary and detail oriented, the way the production and articulation has been engineered, is very old school. The torso will be made of hollow vinyl and strung together very much like a MEGO figure, allowing for an incredible range of motion and pose-ability, that you don't see a lot these days in most action figures. It's bringing back a little of that 70's magic and mixing it with a level of sculptural detail that was rarely seen in that era. In my opinion, this is truly the best of both worlds. It also prevents a lot of the breakage you see in the jointed areas of some figure lines out there, that basically make them more like statues instead of a poseable figure. The range of motion and articulation in these figures easily equals or surpasses a lot of what's being done nowadays, and it's achieved with less joints.
THE WEAPONS PAK! Here's some inside info about the weapons this tribe uses-- they're not actually made by the creatures themselves. A small group of Mexican villagers, who have learned to live in peace and harmony with these denizens of the deep, have fashioned weapons for them and even in some cases, made them jewelry and other body adornments, created from shark teeth-- victims of their hunts that feed not only the tribe, but the villagers themselves as well.
Each weapon has also been been meticulously designed and sculpted to fit in the hands of the beasts-- which remember, will have a little give to them once they're produced, since they'll be solid vinyl or PVC.
Presenting something different and unique, especially through a grass roots approach like this, is how you affect change in the genre space. Independent creators, whatever their respective endeavor, need your support to bring their work to fruition and have a presence in the marketplace-- space on the shelf, so to speak. Over the past few years, you have all helped me build my brand and given me the means to put things out there and show the big studios, publishing companies and toy manufacturers, that there are people who would much rather have something like this as opposed to, or in addition to yet another Transformers movie or Iron Man figure. For this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It truly means the world to me.
You all have given me so much-- and I in turn, have always and will continue to produce a quality product. Something of value for your hard earned dollar, made with love, loyalty and that passion you've all come to know and expect from me and my studio of talented artists and craftsmen. Thanks so much as always for your support and appreciation of my work. I meant what I said about my core backers-- you're all such an amazing group of kind, cool people and your support of not only my projects, but those of other indie creators as well, is nothing short of incredible. A gal named Christine, who's been one of my backers from the very beginning, actually sent extra funds-- far beyond her backer level, simply to help out with whatever I may have needed. Many of you have done the same or offered to come and help me pack boxes, make castings, etc... Truly, truly incredible. THANK YOU.
Risks and challenges
Anytime you go overseas for production of anything, there are delays, communication issues and pitfalls that you can easily fall into, especially if you haven't done this before. Fortunately, this isn't my first barbecue and I've got a lot of production experience and know how to deal with all these things. I've had many successful campaigns, including an action figure, so I already have the bugs worked out of a lot of this-- I also have had phenomenal communication with my backers and every single person always gets their rewards. All I ask is for your patience, which you all have shown in spades. I feel confident about this campaign, as I have with them all. I'm sure you'll all be glad you backed it and will enjoy the quality of the rewards. Thanks again for all your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
