Hooray!!! I've reached my first goal and now going for my stretch goal! Thanks so much for your support and if I reach my next goal, I'll be able to document my recording sessions and adventures!!! Blessings and I love you all!!
I need your support to record and produce a unique album with Burmese Refugees in Thailand. The sales from the album will go to directly back to their community to those in need. With my extensive music production experience, I feel I can make a meaningful album that blends the indigenous sounds of Burma with modern production. Let's do this!
There are over 2 million refugees that have left Burma (also known as Myanmar) since 1962 when the military junta took away their freedom and many have fled to Thailand. Even though the government has transitioned to an elected government, not much has changed and they can’t go back to their homeland in fear of persecution. With this migration, their music and culture is becoming a lost art. I hope to bring about awareness to their situation and also share their music with the world. Music is the language that everyone understands, it's healing and hope to bring communities from around the world closer together.
WHO AM I?
I've been recording and producing albums focused on world music blended with modern production for over 10 years. I’ve made several albums and have even reached reached #7 on the iTunes world music chart. I've performed around the world at places such as the Pyramids of Giza and festivals such as Coachella. I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Natacha Atlas and Ooah (from the Glitch Mob). If you want to know more about me, please go to my website www.davidstarfire.com and here are some songs to check out!
FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
I’m calling the album “Karuna”, which means compassion in Sanskrit, and refers to the desire to remove suffering from people that are displaced from their homeland. After the album is created, the profits from this future album will go directly to those in need. I’m partnering up with the Thai Freedom House in Chiang Mai which is a non-profit organization that offers language and educational services to Burmese Refugees.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
I’ve listed all the expenses of how the money will be spent. Traveling to the other side the world and living in another country is expensive. I'm not including my time or expenses back home and only asking for necessary expenditures.
- $1,700 Round trip flight from Los Angeles to Chiang Mai
- $1,000 Accommodations in Thailand ($500 month x 2)
- $100 Utilities and internet in Thailand ($50 month x 2)
- $800 Meals in Thailand ($400 month x 2)
- $1,200 Car rental in Thailand ($600 month x 2)
- $500 Rode NT4 Stereo Microphone
- $500 Recording studio rental
- $200 Album artwork
$2,500 more for a total of $8,500!
If I am blessed to receive any extra funds, this will go to documenting the recording and production process. I want to create an engaging multi-media experience for people to see how this project unfolds. In order to do this I need professional equipment and help from an experienced videographer. Here is a list of how the extra funds will be used.
- $400 Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface
- $1,200 Canon 70D dslr camera
- $200 Rode camera mic
- $500 Videographer

Risks and challenges
There is the risk of being in Thailand during political unrest and working with Burmese refugees. There might be visa issues, for how long I might be there. I will work with the government as best as I can to avoid any delays. There is currently an outbreak of Dengue fever that I must try and avoid at all cost!
For the rewards, sometimes there might be problems with shipping. If your package gets lost in the mail, I’ll send another one. Some international packages tend to take quite some time to arrive, so please consider that while you wait for your goods.
As most of you know, making records is more of an abstract endeavor than a scientific one. Therefore, there could be circumstances that cause a delay in the completion and release of the project. Please be patient and I will address any obstacles in a timely fashion. Thanks again for your support and will send give updates on my progress!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
