This idea is simple. We want more girls to write code. We'll create code camps for girls to learn the basics of web development. Fast.

We’re two designers from Sweden, sick of not being able to write code. For months we discussed going to Spain to learn Spanish until the idea of swapping Spanish for programming hit us. We published this idea online. In a couple of hours we had more people interested then we ever could have hoped for. We were not alone in this.

We want to bring groups of girls to inspiring places and teach them how to code – We want to create code camps. With us we’ll bring the best teacher we can possibly find. After the camp we will have a solid foundation on which to build further. We don’t want any classroom bullshit – we will learn how real programmers work. Words like Ruby, GitHub, Heroku and node.js will no longer be strangers to our vocabulary. Most importantly, a big group of girls will have found the joy in code and tech!

Initially we already launched one camp – Girls coding in Spain – happening this august and sold out in just one hour. Now we need your help to grow.

What initially started as a fun event for our friends grew. The first day more than 2k people in Sweden engaged in this. The first day of real ticket sales we successfully sold out in the first hour. We now want to do more.

Some nice things people said about us

“I’m so excited to join the camp”

“This is such a good idea. If I learned how to code it would be music easier to get a job.”

"I think it’s amazing to go from “We can’t code, we want to learn” to think “It’s probably more in our situation, let’s do something fun about this” to actually fix all practical details and just do it."

Why should you support us?

First of all, there will be more people that love tech – isn’t that great? Secondly, we want to make these camps the best camps ever. Everything we get as support will go directly to the people participating in these camps – it will enhance their experience. Third, we need some breathing space economically to grow this without ruin the people attending at start.

Some things your support will be used for:

  • We'll launch and market one more camp this autumn.
  • Develop a simple solution for knowledge sharing to enable remote attendance - enable more people to learn.
  • Reduce the actual ticket price to be affordable.
  • Book and pay the best teachers.
  • Market this to more women
  • Growth. Simply bring more people and enable us to do more events.
  • Cover administrational/boring costs of running this initiative.

We're passionated hackathon organisers

We’re two designers living in Stockholm, Sweden. When we don’t do designs we organise hackathons. This year we’ve already pulled off two events. Our events are very well appreciated in Stockholm and are known to be highly personal. Right now we’re super excited about the publicity and great interest in this code camp. We’re already far ahead in the planning - in our minds we’re already there.

Stretch goals

Simple – More money = more camps.

Risks and challenges

Since we are not developer ourselves – yet – one huge risk is to find the right teacher and determine what makes a great learning experience. However we do have a lot of great people around us (real developers) constantly helping us create these first events.

Organising camps on places that are not your home turf are a challenge in it self. Finding the right accommodation, high speed internet, activities, catering is all a challenge. We have reached out to local meet up groups, co-working spaces and start ups on site with great respons. We're constantly trying to improve our global network to get help with this.

Ticket sales is the most obvious risk. If no one buys the tickets we have no participants and no money. So far the interest has been huge and the participant pay their own stay and camp fee with no questions asked. We will use some of the money from Kickstarter to do better marketing and brand building to reduce this risk for the future.
