Next Exogenesis Dev Update Teaser

A lot has happened since the last update. Some good, some bad. I've drafted several versions of the update, and for one reason or another, couldn't post it or had to write a new one. Sometimes our decision, sometimes beyond our control.

We're terribly sorry for the wait. We want the next update to be on a positive note, and we're almost there. Here's a little teaser for now. :)

P.S. We try to post often on our Facebook, so you can follow us there for smaller, incremental updates. https://www.facebook.com/exogenesisgame

Sorry you feel that way, Martin. We've released some content from almost every chapter, but we'll try to figure out how to regain your confidence. We're actually considering a backer-only update to avoid spoiling everyone else, since most things we're keeping under wraps enter into spoiler territory already.

About Ouya and our technical issues, a lot of the problems go back to the first Unity devs we hired. Like what we said in our previous update, we've accrued a lot of technical debt from that, making it really hard to optimise for Ouya...and lower spec machines as well. One example is that when character animations play, then disappear, they're still running in the background, wasting all those precious resources. Then the old devs used a lot of scripts to do simple interactions, making things even more complicated. In a way, it's also my inexperience with Unity at fault, because I couldn't review these things myself, and the consultants we brought in never dug deeper into the code.

So the flip side to this is that the game should perform better on everything once we're done. Also, the new control system we've implemented will benefit everyone who want to use a gamepad for the game, and it's work we'll have to do anyway for porting the game to consoles.

Content implementation-wise, we were actually breezing through it. It's been faster than ever to setup the scenes, and we've had a part-timer help with dialogue. Once we're done with the Ouya problems, the only big challenge left would be the custom puzzles. Putting stuff in, we've already found an efficient workflow for that and can't wait to get back to to doing so once the game is running well on Ouya.

Once again, we apologize for the long delay. We assure you that this game will be released. We can't let all that work go to waste, and we can't betray the confidence of everyone who supported us from the very beginning.

I'll be blunt: frankly, I stopped caring. The Ouya thing was an incredible mistake considering the difficulties of the market you're producing (as admitted yourselves in previous updates), especially now that they basically went under and all the stuff has - I imagine - renogotiated.

I may sound pessimistic, but nothing shown so far has been able to convince me the game will be released. I wouldn't say the backing I did was wrong - what I feel is wrong is what happened afterwards.

About the bad news - It's really just the whole Ouya closing down and being bought by Razer thing, and the technical difficulties we've encountered in porting the game. So, we don't want to cause undue worry. Maybe this teaser is a lot vaguer than it should have been. We just really wanted to get something out there, because we know you've been waiting, but to repeat - this isn't the real update. It's just a teaser.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

@Specie8470 Haha, this isn't the actual update. You're right, it would be terrible if THIS was the long-delayed update. It's just a teaser for the update. Sorry, didn't think it would cause confusion. But the title is kinda confusing, looking at now.

@Tracey We'll talk about them in the next update. :)

The update isn't on facebook either. To tell you the truth this update seems very lame and somewhat concerning. Considering this game has been in development for almost a year and half and and your releasing this with just showing footage of the game we saw almost a year and half ago just with using a controlle really seems odd why not show new content or new areas or gameplay which would have made this more exciting. I mean come on it's just you using a controller to intereact with a gameplay we saw over a year ago. I am wondering what this bad news you mention is. I have a strong feeling this game isn't comming out in 2015.
