About this project

For anyone having trouble pledging for any reason, we've now set up a PayPal address so you can also get a reduced price backer copy of the game when it's released next year.

These links will only be active as long as the Kickstarter is running.

PayPal£4.50 pledge, a copy of the finished game when released.

PayPal £21.00 pledge, a copy of the alpha when released. All benefits listed in rewards.

PayPal £50.00 pledge for pre-alpha copy of the game, when released. All benefits listed in rewards.

Why £4.50 and £21.00? Unfortunately, to process this payment, PayPal takes a share. If payment is coming from outside of the United Kingdom, a larger fee is also processed. To avoid the hassle of creating a link for every single country, we thought we'd square it the payments to cover all eventualities.Sorry for any inconvenience!

** A pledge over £4.00 entitles you to a digital download of the game. You'll be provided with a Steam key to access this. **

If you do not wish to use Steam, there will be other methods to procure a copy. We'll be updating with information as soon as we can."

Sheltered is a strategy game where you're set the task of keeping your family alive in the cut-throat, desolate expanse that is the post-apocalyptic era.

A father, a mother, a daughter and a son. Given a head-start over the billions lost in the nuclear holocaust, you start in an almost impenetrable underground fortress designed to keep a family alive and well.

Dangers and potential hazards that threaten the life of your family.

  • Irradiated beasts of the nuclear wasteland.
  • High radiation levels outside of the shelter. Finite food, water and oxygen.
  • Claustrophobia, mental exhaustion and trauma when involved in highly stressful situations (eg. combat, death of loved one.)
  • Necessary systems breaking down.
  • Having to leave the shelter to make supply runs.

But the highest dangers of all are the dregs of the nuclear war. The rest of the human race that wander the wilderness, alone, cold, malnourished, and wanting nothing more than to share your well-prepared comforts.

Family members and their status.

The game contains a highly complex system that keeps track of the family water and food rations, their mental well being, their general fatigue and sickness levels. The clipboard will provide key information throughout the game, and should be checked upon regularly!

Gaining supplies and maintaining your shelter to keep your family alive!

The shelter must be kept in tip-top shape, and given the respect it deserves. It's going to be your family home for a long time. Daily maintenance and stock checking is paramount to sustainability!

Make those repairs!
Make those repairs!

The player will have to send out members of their family (or possible survivors they have recruited into their shelter) to scavenge for supplies in the wasteland.

Make sure those systems don't break down, or you'll be left in the dark!

If they do go down, make sure you get on your Hazmat suit before traversing the wasteland to make repairs! Above all else, do NOT leave the shelter doors open, lest your family will suffer the deadly effects of radiation contamination

Survivors of the wasteland

Survivors play a big role in Sheltered. It's where a lot of players will have to make drastic moral decisions that could be extremely detrimental or beneficial to the well being of the shelter. Woman with a baby? Worth risking the lives of your own children to shelter her? It's up to you.

Moral choices. Do we let her in? Will she be a threat to the family unit?
Moral choices. Do we let her in? Will she be a threat to the family unit?

Defending your family.

There's a very fun combat system implemented that requires a lot of strategic thinking. A man, woman and two children are fairly easy game for the raiders that roam the wasteland. Each family member will have their own stats that will effect the combat resolve. The best thing a player can do is avoid combat at all costs. Traumatic experiences in violent situations will have a tremendous toll on the family environment and how every member functions.

Progress through the game.

The game will be open-ended, and will not have a direct story line. YOU make the history for the family, and the game only lasts as long as you can keep them alive.

Before the nuclear holocaust.

At the start of the game, the player must grab as many supplies from the supermarket as possible to stock their pantry in the shelter. Whatever supplies they manage to secure before the end of the four minute warning is what the player will start with in their shelter.

What people have to say!

"The concept holds some fantastic potential for recreating apocalyptic despair. There's always a moment in such fictions, when the gnarled hero, while travelling the wasteland, comes across the tale of a family driven desperate by fear, paranoia and tragedy. It'll be nice to see their story for a change"

"Sure, Fallout deals with the mutant shootin' aftermath of a nuclear holocaust years later, but what about those first weeks? When people are still banging on the door of your bunker asking for help?"

"Any game that features a painting by René Magritte has my complete and undivided attention"

I like the bit where the man’s interviewed while sitting in front of a sink. Aping a fallout shelter aesthetic, or just a student? Is there any difference?

"While the concept appears to be similar to the fallout series of games, the key difference is that the base time point for the holocaust is modern day (or within the last 20 years or so) rather than some time in the future, but also that you are operating as the whole family and not a sole survivor. As such all the decisions you need to make in the game will be to preserve the whole family unit and not one person in isolation."

"It’s a bit like Oregon Trail, only you don’t go anywhere"

"Sheltered is the glorious brainchild of indie development studio Unicube, located in Shrewsbury, UK. In Sheltered, there is no linear path to follow. Everything is about maintaining your shelter, protecting your family, and finding a way to keep the radiation out as long as possible."

The development of the game.

Sheltered is a highly complex computer game. It has thousands and thousands of variables tracking and randomizing the outcome of situations to make the game as interesting and fresh to the player as possible. To make a game of this calibre takes a lot of time. A LOT of time. We're two guys with a plethora of other commitments in our lives, but our top priority is making this game. With your help and backing we can focus our time and attention almost exclusively on making the game the very best it can be. With the money we're going to set aside a large chunk to make the rewards as satisfying as they possibly can be, and we're going to use it wisely to make the distribution as smooth as possible.

Dean Foster: Lead programmer/game design.

Sonny Meek: Artist/programmer/game design.

Ben Ridge: Audio/composer.

The game will be available for Windows (XP, 7, 8), Linux (Ubuntu based distrubutions) and Mac OS.

We're also currently listed on Steam Greenlight, so please consider voting for us!

Risks and challenges

Time is the biggest obstacle. With busy lives, supporting ourselves whilst we take such a large chunk of time out to work on the game can be extremely taxing.

The main risks we face are death or distribution mishaps (we're aiming to make the distribution as smooth as we possibly can, and will take necessary measures prior to the release to make sure this doesn't happen). The hardest part of distribution is backer rewards, as we want it to be a worldwide thing. The best part about making the game is it's purely digital, so the delivery of the game itself shouldn't be a problem worldwide.

This game will be made. We've already invested hundreds of man hours into it, and we're confident that we'll make it as good as it can be.

FAQ

  • There have been a lot of requests for other languages, and we're VERY adamant that everyone gets a chance to play the game and nobody is left out.

For this we'll either be using our own funds, or trying to rely on community contributors to get the game translated.

So far our goals are to have the game translated and fully playable in the following languages, but we don't want to rule out other languages.

    - Russian
    - Spanish
    - French
    - Italian
    - German
    - Portuguese
    - Romanian

  • We believe VERY strongly in DRM free software, and don't like forcing people into certain systems.

Our main distribution platform will be Steam, for those that don't want Steam keys for their game will have other ways to obtain a digital copy. We'll be updating these methods later this year.

    Last updated:
  • Yes. There's no official 'win' condition to achieve. There's no story that you haven't crafted yourself by keeping your family alive for as long as possible.

  • To make the game as good as it can be, we need to be able to work on the game full-time. Currently we're working on it part-time, whilst we keep ourselves in food and housing by working day jobs.

We'd like to be able to devote all of our time to this game, and if we're going to deliver it within just shy of a year, we're going to have to give up our current jobs and support ourselves until the final release.

We're also in need of some new equipment, as some of our current hardware is very old and slow, and is frankly slowing down the development speed.

  • Currently there's only one set family type, with randomized names selected from a long database of the most common names. The work involved in making animations specific for different sprites is fairly daunting, but it's something we'd really like featured, so hopefully it'll be a feature in the future.

If it features in the game, there will be options to have difference races and sexual orientations.

    Last updated:
  • Currently we don't have any specific plans to make the game moddable, but we're definitely open to the idea of releasing tools in the future to make this a possibility.

    Last updated:
  • Each family member has a unique set of randomized stats at the beginning of the game. These increase with each task they perform. They won't 'level up' exactly, as it's a bit more complicated than that. The game will feature ways to increase the ability of a given family member's skill in a certain field.

    Last updated:
  • The short answer is YES, though we don't know exactly when we'll be adding this as a feature.

    Last updated:
  • Yes, currently the player will be able to add more rooms to their shelter, given they've scavenged enough supplies to be able to do so. Currently the game runs on a Z axis, so more rooms in the shelter will be layers going backwards.
