About this project
(Note: the "pitch" video from our first issue, including a synopsis of the series as a whole, can be seen on our old Issue #1 Kickstarter page.)
(EDIT: The project description looks a bit wordy... How about we just tell you about the comic in song?)
(EDIT: Worried about jumping into the story on the second issue? Click here, and worry not!)
"I really got excited by the thoughtfulness and cleverness of the vision on display in this comic." -Comics Bulletin
"I'd definitely recommend this series (great title, too)." -Comics Should Be Good @ CBR
Apparently people really liked our first issue! That's very good news, because we've got a lot more story to tell. We could use some help, though, which is where you come in. But first let's give you a little background:
About First Law
(If you've read issue #1 you can probably skip this section.)
For the better part of two years, childhood friends Mike Isenberg and Oliver Mertz spent hundreds of hours on Skype crafting a story. Then, with some help from Kickstarter and the talents of artist Daniel Lapham, they started turning that story into a comic.
First Law Of Mad Science is a sci-fi/horror adventure comic about super-science gone weird.
Set in a near-future world, the story focuses on super scientist George Baker and his family. George's most recent invention, an electronic retinal implant called "Cyber-Eyes," has literally changed the world. The implants are so cheap and easy to get, and so amazingly useful, that over two-fifths of the population has had them installed just a year after they hit the market.
But when things start going inexplicably and bizarrely wrong with the original test subjects, including George's own son Hank, George and his family will have to find out why before the problem spreads and causes world-wide panic and hysteria.
As they start looking for answers, they'll be pulled into a high-stakes, globe-trotting mystery/adventure, during which they'll uncover ancient civilizations, killer robots, sinister cults, and corporate conspiracies.
Check out FirstLawOfMadScience.com for a free 8-page preview from Issue #1, plus our blog, links to reviews we've gotten, and info on how to purchase the first issue (as low as 99 cents for the PDF!).
(You can also get a copy of Issue #1 via this Kickstarter project, by adding $4 to your pledge. See Update #7 for details.)
About Issue #2
Issue #2 picks up where our Issue #1 cliff-hanger left off. Deep beneath the Antarctic ice, at the site of an ancient and mysterious subterranean city, Emma Baker and her team are about to open up a new area of excavation. In doing so they'll set loose a dangerous creature that wreaks havoc in the city. Meanwhile, as the team attempts to deal with the threat, Emma will uncover evidence that a traitor may be in their midst.
We're really excited about this story. Like everything we do with First Law, it's been a real labor of love for us; above all, it's the type of story that we love to read. It should be tense and exciting, and will offer readers new twists and clues that tie back to the mystery started in Issue #1.
The Kickstarter community turned Issue #1 into a reality. We really hope you'll join us for Issue #2. Your support will help us with paying our talented artists, as well as with printing and promotional costs. To entice you into clicking that big green "BACK THIS PROJECT" button towards the upper right of the page, we've got some great rewards lined up:
Here's all the cool stuff up for offer:
–Access to Exclusive Updates– All backers, even if you pledge as little as $1, will get access to behind-the-scenes production updates including concept art and early looks at the pages as they come in.
–Digital Copies of Issues #1 & #2– Everyone pledging $5 or more will get PDFs of the first two issues, months before Issue #2 is available anywhere else. You'll get Issue #2 as soon as it's done, which should be sometime late spring. It probably won't be hitting stores until sometime in the fall, and won't be available anywhere else until then!
–Printed pre-release copies of Issue #2– Like we said above, this Kickstarter campaign will be the only place to get Issue #2 until sometime this fall! Get it months early and make everyone jealous!
–Autographed copies of Issue #2–
–Your name printed on the "Thank You" Page of each copy of Issue #2–
–Signed & numbered Limited Editions of Issue #2–
–Lab coats embroidered with "Noreon Labs"– Noreon is the big faceless megacorporation that seems to be behind pretty much everything in the First Law world. We wore these lab coats to New York Comic Con. They're pretty sweet
–Personalized copies of Issue #1 and/or #2, in which you pick the names of the characters– Offering naming rights to expendable minor characters turned out to be extremely popular last time around. We didn't think we had too many of of those characters left to offer... but then we figured, "Screw it! Why not let the backers name all the characters?" Check out Update #1 to see how this is possible.
–Dinner with Mike and/or Oliver– If you're around DC or NYC, or if we're coming to your area for a convention. Or, I guess, if you want to fly us out to you.
–Copies of Issue #1– Add $4 to any pledge and send us a message saying you want the first issue, and we'll include a copy of First Law #1 with your other rewards. If your chosen reward level includes autographs on Issue #2, we'll also sign your copy of Issue #1. (See Update #7 for details.)
Thank you, just for taking an interest in First Law. It's a labor of love for us, and we really look forward to sharing the story with you. Even if you can't pledge any money right now, please send the link along to any friends that you think might dig what we're up to; every bit of exposure helps!
Extra thanks also to all of the Issue #1 backers. We'd never have gotten this far without you!
Special thanks, as well, to J.J. Surma for the excellent voice-over work in the video.
-Mike & Oliver
