My name is Steve Gabriel and I’m an ecologist, farmer, and educator. In 2014, I co-wrote FARMING THE WOODS which has been a success in part due to a crowdfunding campaign we ran and the support of 149 wonderful backers.
I’m currently working on my second book on agroforestry, titled SILVOPASTURE: A Guide to Managing Pasture Animals, Forage Crops, and Trees in a Temperate Farm Ecosystem.
The book discusses the ecological foundation of silvopasture and offers planning tools for selecting species, setting up a rotational grazing system, and planting trees. The content balances research-based information along with the experiences of people doing the work on the ground.

While the book is comprehensive, there is much more to the conversation. I need your help to support those who have contributed valuable content to the book, as well as continue working to build a number of resources and networks so that together we can elevate the practice of Silvopasture.
What is Silvopasture?
Silvopasture is defined as a farm system that intentionally mixes trees, shrubs, grasses, and livestock. Research has shown that silvopasture systems offer many benefits to the farmer and the environment.
Silvopasture systems increase healthy food for animals, protect them from the harsh sun and winds, and rapidly build healthy soil.
There is even good evidence that Silvopasture systems are among the best in addressing a rapidly changing climate. The recent New York Times Best Seller book DRAWDOWN rated Silvopasture #9 among ALL solutions to climate change.
It takes a village to hold and share this knowledge, and your gift supports the book and the development tools and resources for the benefit of everyone interested in learning more. We are asking for $7,500 so that we can:
- Provide stipends to those who contributed to the book.
- Catalog the research papers and free resources I found in my research and house them in one place online for YOUR easy access.
- Conduct and publish free audio interviews with some of the leading practitioners of Silvopasture.
- Develop an online course to support people working on their own silvopasture plans.
- Donate 30 free books to libraries and farming organizations.
- Launch an email listerv for practitioners to continue the conversation
We can make this happen if we reach our funding goal. Thanks for your help!
Stipends to contributors: $2500
Audio interviews, online course, etc: $1500
Cost of Rewards and fees: $3500
Anything above the base amount will help us go even further.
For additional $500, we can hire translators to transcribe some important research papers into English so we can better understand best practices.
For additional $1000, we will publish an online map of practicing farms and offer networking opportunities for all who are interested.
- For an additional $2000, we can host a free webinar series in 2018 featuring researchers and practitioners.
The simplest way to help is to pre-order a signed copy of the book ($60) – this way, you get a book, and by pitching in a little extra money, guarantee the work will be of the highest quality and benefit you the most.
Other perks include access to our forestry online course and workshops we are offering this year on our farm, plus the opportunity to get signed copies of both SILVOPASTURE and FARMING THE WOODS. Any amount helps!
In an unprecedented era of a changing climate and an unstable food system, we all need to better understand and rapidly implement farming systems that are regenerative, so that we can eat, farmers can make a living, and our environment improves.
Please share this campaign with your friends, peers, and social media networks. We want to reach the world!" @wellspringforestfarmschool
Risks and challenges
While the book is a comprehensive resource, people need access to the research materials and to a community of peers in order to adopt this farming system and do it well. We all learn best as we build a community of knowledge around this practice.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
