Share it with your family members and use Skype or FaceTime with it. Never run out of power again
Today we all live with technology around. But technology requires power and all our battery operated smartphones and tablets need to be charged frequently. Since my whole family (my wife and my two little princesses) is using iPhones and iPads of all gens, you can imagine how many different chargers you'll find in our house. Everywhere tangled wires and chaos (and most of the times even hard to find a free charger..:)). So I started searching for a nice designed charger on the market, able to charge different models, able to charge two as a bonus. My plan was to place one in almost every room of our house to resolve the chaos and to make sure my own devices get always charged as well. But I couldn't find the right one. Some designs were great but limited to only one device or just providing a 30-pin (fine for my daughters iPhone4's and their gen 2 iPads), but what about my iPhone 5? They are making you either buy more expensive cables or blocking the one which came with your phones and tablets. Or don't work with your nice cases. I thought about how other families would handle this? Dad is keen on Apple and Mom keen on Samsung? And what about the Kindle you like so much for reading books? I got the idea and sketched it down and finally decided to develop my perfect docking station by myself ( having a designing and engineering background was truly an advantage) This started months ago and If you would have told me at that time about how things have developed tip today I would not have believed you. Well, I sincerely hope you agree with me that the final result is a cool thing:
VARIUS DOCK SINGLE X1
VARIUS X1 is a docking and synchronizing station for one device. Whether smartphone or tablet, whether Apple, Samsung, HTC, Kindle or other brands- VARIUS X1 virtually works with all devices of different manufacturers. The delivery contents 3 different adapters to enable the user to change to any desired configuration within a minute (for lightning, Apple 30-pin and Micro USB). VARIUS X1 comes with a USB cable, wall charger and a tablet support inlay. VARIUS X1 is IOS 7x compatible
VARIUS DOCK DUAL X2
The big brother, VARIUS X2, is equipped with two slots to provide the possibility to charge or to synchronize two devices of same or different brands. The delivery contents all adapters to enable the user to change to any desired configuration within a minute (for lightning, Apple 30-pin and Micro USB). VARIUS X2 comes with a USB cable, wall charger and a tablet support inlay. VARIUS X2 is IOS 7x compatible
VARIUS DOCK - Designed for You
If you have been searching for docks who might fit all different versions of smartphones or tablets the result is quiet limited. Either they don't work with cases, or they just work with smartphones only, sometimes they are cheap looking or not functional at all and most will force you to bring your own cables which is another limitation, not only in cost.
Here is the solution, designed for You- CNC machine milled, either made out of a single block of aircraft aluminum or out of finest hardwood. It comes in seven different surface finishes and provides premium quality and an aesthetic design of its own class. Less is more and we minimized it the way Steve Jobs would have done it. The elegant low profile base is only 15mm in height, this is pretty unique in the industry
Easy to Dock and to Un-dock, using the innovative and industry proven micro suction tape guarantees a slip-resistent and stable placement of the smartphone/tablet and an easy removal the device by using just two fingers. This special tape will keep the dock fixed on any flat surface, but allows easy re-positioning without any residue.
Change your configuration within a minute, just four screws and plug and play..Our DUAL Dock VARIUS X2 even allows to mix up two different brands/devices like your 30-pin iPhone4 with a Samsung Galaxy or your daughters Ipad with your Iphone 5S. To match our goal to create a very slim unit we reduced the overall height of the base to a very cool 15mm only. This required to design and minimize all the adapters accordingly. We worked here with a sub supplier who has outstanding experience in this field and many samples were made, tested and finally approved to meet our high level of quality requirement. The USB cable going into the dock is connected (simply plugged in) to the adapters by a special Mini USB plug which is angled and we needed to make it as slim as possible to fit to the limited dimensions. Every unit comes with a set of all needed adapters, USB cable and wall charger.
For larger smartphones and tablets we include base adapters which will provide a broader support.
FLEXUS, this is a unique designed backing device we came up with. It can be placed into 6 different positions to support any configuration, with a case or without a case (although- we really like it pure:)). Both sides of FLEXUS are equipped with a soft silicone rubber to protect your valuable devices from any scratches.
This wall charger comes with every dock and we made it also available for you to buy as an extra, because we think its a cool thing to have. When we developed the docks we figured out that Samsung has coded the charging requirements for their tablets different (you can't charge a Samsung tablet with an Apple tablet charger and the other way around doesn't work as well) The good news is, that our charger can do that. It comes with a double USB slot, marked with an A and S. Both, A+S will charge all smartphones, for all tablets except Samsung you use A and for Samsung tablets you use S only.
All certificates, ROHS, CE FC etc., input 100-240V 0.4A, max output 3A (combined), surge protection.
To demonstrate how focused we are to create an aesthetic design: We designed a double USB cable for our DUAL Dock VARIUS X2. It runs out of the dock in a single line for about 4feet and then splits into two standard USB plugs, devided into two separate, 8 inch long, lines which enables you either to use the wall charger or to connect both plugs into the USB ports of your pc or laptop. We simply didn't want to see two cables coming out of the dock which would also make the initial concept of reducing wires and creating a clean area looking a bit strange.
GOLD. SILVER.GLOSSY WHITE.BLACK.WALNUT.OAKTREE.BAMBOO
Yep, Gold (all metal parts are gold-plated with the real thing!) for the individual who wants it very exclusive. The blasted and anodized aluminum versions in matte black and silver are not only made for the Mac fans. Powder-coated Glossy White or one of the three hardwood versions, Walnut, Oaktree and Bamboo - seven different surfaces, there is one for every need.
Here are some examples of possible placements and if you start thinking you´ll come up with more for sure. And how about corporate offices or hotel rooms?
How we got there
From the first sketch and idea, about in May this year, the product has moved step by step and month by month to the final and working prototypes, ready for production. Endless hours of cutting and drilling wood which was used as early mock-ups (btw., we liked the wood design so much that we decided to add this as an option), final machining and milling of the first prototypes, hand painting, measuring , testing, developing different models and designs with our 3D software, like it and dislike it, again and again. Used Felix, our 3D printer to visualize some designs. Buying and borrowing plenty of different smartphones, tablets and cases to figure out how to make this a multi-use dock. We spent plenty of time between my father in law`s carpenter's workshop, another friend`s metal fabrication company and an electronic component supplier to develop the needed components by making a lot of samples and in-between we checked out other suppliers, all to make sure we can create an awesome product. Just before Christmas we finished the final prototypes.
The Manufacturing and Delivery Schedule
If we succeed with the campaign on KickStarter we will immediately finalize the remaining tooling for some parts which will take till mid/end of February. We selected our final and reliable suppliers for the metal, wood, and electronic parts and they are prepared to manufacture and deliver the needed components no later than mid of March. Packaging design is currently in progress, samples are expected shortly. All is planned and scheduled to get the first components delivered Mid of March so that we can start shipping out the first units mid/end of April.
We will partly outsource the assembling and/or shipping and have made pre-arrangements with two reliable companies in the US and in Germany. all depending on the final quantities we might achieve through the campaign. We are good for doing more than 1000 units a week. Hiring part time workers to support the process is another option. Quality control will be handled by us for sure. Michael has done several much larger projects in different parts of the world and knows how to coordinate and adapt variable processes to deliver on time.
We will take this as a global project and we will assemble and ship out of the US and out of Europe (Germany). The additional fee for shipping international will be used to cover the shipping costs and the required VAT for our European friends. No custom duties or any import paperwork will be required for residents of the EU - the units will be shipped straight to your adress.
Means, US residents just pay the rewards which includes shipping. Residents of the EU pay an additional fee for shipping and VAT purposes, no custom duties will appear. All other international residents pay an extra fee for shipping, custom duties may appear, sorry guys :)
How we will use the funds
The funds raised will be used for tooling, purchasing raw materials and assembling/logistic/shipping costs. If the campaign is successful, we will start shipping the first units in April - promised!
We are designing innovative things, but to get a product to the market it requires a lot of costs to be paid in advance. We are using KickStarter to crowdsource the demand upfront and to bring this product to life.
Your support is truly appreciated
We are very thankful for your engagement and please share this project with any friends that like aesthetic and functionally designed products as well
There is one more thing :)
VARIUS DOCK will be shown at the CES show in Las Vegas, JAN 7-10 2014, booth 73704, EUREKA start-up area at the Venetian Hotel

Risks and challenges
We know what it takes to deliver on schedule. The experience in design, engineering and manufacturing for over 30 years provides a good base to handle this project, even dealing with unexpected problems.
Our working prototypes are the results from months of development and testing and we are ready to move into serial production. We got most of the tooling in place and selected reliable suppliers.
However, there is always a risk of potential delays in tooling and schedules for materials and shipping.
These risks can never be eliminated at 100%, even if we feel we got all issues covered.
We understand that given the opportunity to be here on Kickstarter and to get support within the community is also an obligation and we will update you frequently as well as we always will appreciate any input on the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
